SUMMARY:Amy Beach’s Gaelic Symphony THYAC Winners Perform!
LOCATION:The Patricia Reser Center for the Arts\, 12625 SW Crescent Street
 \, Beaverton\, OR
DESCRIPTION:Presenting the winners of the Travis Hatton Young Artist Compe
tition! Three finalists are selected from dozens of local student musician
s at the THYAC recital in February to perform with full orchestra. The sel
ected concerto performances will be the centerpiece of this season finale
concert\, framed by two powerful works from the Romantic era: Richard Wagn
er’s stirring Overture to Tannhäuser and Amy Beach’s sweeping “Gael
ic” Symphony. Last season’s performance of American composer Howard Ha
nson’s Symphony No. 2 was met with such a positive response\, Music Dire
ctor Pierre-Alain Chevalier decided to feature another American composer f
or this season’s finale. Beach’s “Gaelic” is a landmark work by on
e of the earliest major American symphonists and the first American woman
to have her symphony performed by a major orchestra. While inspired by Gae
lic musical traditions\, Beach’s symphony is rooted in the expressive la
nguage of the Romantic era\, offering music that audiences of all kinds ca
n enjoy. The Travis Hatton Young Artist Competition is always a highlight
of the Beaverton Symphony Orchestra’s season\, both for its musicians an
d its audience. Don’t miss the chance to hear the next generation of exc
eptional local talent take the stage with your Beaverton Symphony Orchestr
