A Queer Guide to Saving American Democracy
Join a special evening with trailblazing drag artist, activist, and political candidate Marti Cummings and Portland-based constitutional law professor and author Robin Maril. Before the film, Marti and Robin will sit down for a live conversation about queer representation, civic engagement, and the power of showing up for your community. The conversation will be moderated by Kyndall Mason of Basic Rights Oregon.
Following the conversation, stick around for Queen of New York, the acclaimed documentary following Marti Cummingsâ groundbreaking 2020 campaign to become one of the first openly nonbinary members of the New York City Council. This evening also celebrates the launch of Robin Marilâs new book, A Queer Guide to Saving American Democracy. Copies will be available for purchase on site.
ON SCREEN: Queen of New York
2023. Directed by Emma Fidel. Runtime: 1 hour 20 minutes.
Welcome to a different kind of drag race. As NYC emerges from the chaos of 2020, Marti Cummings (they/them), an audacious and big-hearted drag queen, goes all out in a historic bid to become a City Councilperson. Itâs one of the most hotly contested Council races in years, and Martiâs strongest competitor is Shaun Abreu, a tenantsâ lawyer with deep roots in the districtâs Latinx community. As these first-timers race to do the most good for their Upper Manhattan neighbors, they offer very different visions for Democratic politics â one in a suit and tie, the other in combat boots and floral print. As this immersive documentary reveals, Martiâs passion inspires queer activists and allies to change the political system. Their campaign becomes a community of its own, especially for Martiâs non-binary peers who have never before seen themselves represented.
James Spooner Book Release + Afro-Punk
James Spooner joins PAM CUT for a screening of his film Afro-Punk, followed by an author talk for his new book It Starts With Anger. Books will be available for sale on site.
It Starts With Anger is a coming-of-age graphic memoir exploring race, identity, and rebellion through James Spoonerâs teenage years in 1990s New York into his young adulthood in the early 2000s. Confronted with systemic racism, microaggressions, and Nazi extremism within punk spaces, Spooner traces how reactionary anger evolved into a creative force and a path to self-determination, along the way following the founding of the Afro-Punk movement, his eventual decision to leave the company, and an ongoing raw examination of the tensions between underground culture and mainstream success.
While not a traditional graphic memoir, It Starts With Anger combines black-and-white, zine-inspired visual elements including photos, illustrations, and cartoon panels with traditional narrative in a unique package that recounts the story behind Afro-Punk. James Spooner has not talked publicly about his reasons for quitting Afro-Punk previously, and the book is a damning indictment of its corporatization. But more importantly, it also oďŹers a look at issues of Black identity, representation, and the lack thereof in a movement that had often prided itself on allyship, while being completely myopic to all the ways it fell short in that regard as a scene that was ironically both liberating and alienating for the Black people drawn to it.
ON SCREEN: Afro-Punk
2003. Directed by James Spooner. Runtime: 1 hour 6 minutes.
This film, which many may assume is a historical punk documentary, is actually an honest and needed treatment of race and identity. Punk and Hardcore music are simply the microcosm in which it is told. First-time director, James Spooner, in telling this story, has opened new dialogues on these crucial subjects both intra- and interracially. Many times funny, sometimes sobering, a wake-up call to America. An examination of the duality of racial identity that DuBois called âdouble consciousness.â What could have been âThe Bad Brains Storyâ is a story about kids, alienated by two cultures and two communities. Many of these punk and hardcore kids have never questioned their role in the punk scene or the black community until their interviews, and itâs obvious as they struggle on camera to reconcile a fragmented self.
This program is co-presented by Literary Arts as part of the Cover-to-Cover program.

The Making of 1177 BC: A Graphic History of the Year Civilization Collapsed
A talk by Glynnis Fawkes.
How does a cartoonist go about adapting a work of history, specifically Eric H. Clineâs 1177 BC: The Year Civilization Collapsed? In this talk Fawkes will describe the process of interpreting Clineâs text in comics, an exercise during which she repeatedly asked herself how she might tell this story visually. Through page compositions and dramatizations in which historical figures (such as Ramses III) speak, she imagined characters for whom we have no record offering commentary and opinions. To guide the narrative, she introduced two new young characters, Pel (of the Sea Peoples) and Shesha, (an Egyptian scribe) who ask the central question of the book: Why after three prosperous centuries did the civilizations of the Eastern Mediterranean Bronze Age suddenly come to an end?
Glynnis Fawkes is the co-author with Eric H Cline and illustrator of 1177 BC: A Graphic History of the Year Civilization Collapsed (Princeton University Press). She is also the author-illustrator of Charlotte BrontĂŤ before Jane Eyre (Little, Brown)and Persephoneâs Garden (Secret Acres), among other books, and her comics have appeared on the website of The New Yorker. She has worked as an archaeological illustrator around the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean and teaches at the Center for Cartoon Studies in Vermont.
Sponsored by the Archaeological Institute of America and Reed's department of Greek, Latin, and Ancient Mediterranean Studies. Free and open to the public.

In the Shadows: Maggie Stiefvater & Isabel CaĂąas
Young adult authors, Maggie Stiefvater (The Dream Thieves) and Isabel CaĂąas (The House of Gardenias) come together for a conversation on the hauntingly enchanted worlds in their latest releases. In the newest installment of the graphic novel iteration of The Raven Cycle, Stiefvater and adapter Sas Milledge bring the original text to life with rich illustrations and suspenseful panels. Like Stiefvater, CaĂąas expertly constructs a gothic world threatened by an unimaginable ancient power. Moderated by Alicia Tate, these authors discuss the mythical worlds they built and the characters that try to understand them.
About The Dream Thieves:The second book in Maggie Stiefvaterâs #1 NYT bestselling series The Raven Cycle, now gorgeously illustrated as a graphic novel!
Ronan Lynch is made of secrets. His longest kept one? He can pull impossible things out of dreams. Itâs a secret thatâs nearly killed him more than once. Waking the corpse road should have led Blue and the Raven Boys straight to Glendower, the Whelsh king rumored to be sleeping beneath the mountains of Henrietta. But instead, the forest of Cabeswater has disappeared, energy hums and sputters beneath the town, and the Raven Boysâ search is at a dead end.
Ronanâs dreams may be the key to finding Glendower, but none of the Raven Boys are prepared for what will be unleashed in Ronanâs desperate attempt to finally control his power. Reimagined as a stunning full-color graphic novel adapted and illustrated by Sas Milledge, Dream Thieves blurs the line between reality and nightmare until they are one and the same.
About The Houses of Gardenias:A debut gothic YA from the USA Today bestselling author of The Hacienda and The Possession of Alba DĂaz Sixteen-year-old Minerva has endured hunger, violence, and unrest in a capital city inspired by colonial Mexico.
Determined to escape her fatherâs cruelty, she reinvents herself in a wealthy loyalist enclave, becoming ladyâs maid to the formidable widow EncarnaciĂłn del Valle.
For the first time, Minerva knows stability with regular meals, warm light powered by magical chispa, and a measure of protection. When a ruthless regime rises to power, the household withdraws to the del Valle familyâs secluded estate, Casa de las Gardenias. There, amid resentful heirs and rigid social hierarchies, something far older than the nationâs turmoil waits in the shadows.
Itâs a haunting, timely gothic novel that weaves Mexican history, class tension, and supernatural dread.

Never Say Die: Ke Huy Quan
In this stunning and compulsively readable memoir, the Oscar-winning star of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, The Goonies, and Everything Everywhere All at Once, Ke Huy Quan, tells the story of his journey from Vietnamese refugee to 80s child star to the most inspiring comeback in Hollywood history. Interviewed by OPBâs Dave Miller. Ke Huy Quanâs Hollywood adventure began when he was twelve years old, a mere five years after his family escaped Communist Northern Vietnam and settled down to a relatively peaceful life in L.A.âs Chinatown. After attending an open call audition on a whim, he was unexpectedly swept up in the wild world of filmmaking: learning to swim from Harrison Ford on the set of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, receiving trucks full of toys from Steven Spielberg and George Lucas for his birthday, meeting Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker, and making lifelong friends on the set of The Goonies.
A star of two of the most beloved movies of the â80s, there appeared to be no limit to Keâs rise. But just a few years later, the roles had dried up and it seemed like Hollywood no longer had a place for him. He eventually left acting to work odd jobs behind the scenes for directors like Wong Kar Wai. His confidence was badly shaken, but his love of performing never abated. It wasnât until decades later, when he was 49 years old, that he stepped back in front of the camera to star in a strange little indie film called Everything Everywhere All at Once, which surprised everyone with its incredible box-office and awards season success. To call Keâs Oscar-winning performance a triumphant return would be an understatement.
In this moving, inspirational memoir, Ke paints a vivid self-portrait, telling both heart-wrenching and funny stories of his early rise, slow fall from the spotlight, the resilience that kept him going through his darkest times, and his eventual resurrection on one of the biggest stages in Hollywood. Never Say Die is the story of Keâs extraordinary life, a love letter to the movies and people that shaped him, and a powerful testament to never giving up on your dreams.

Napoleon and His Marshals: Victory, Rivalry, Betrayal
Join acclaimed historian Lord Andrew Roberts for a fascinating look at the men who helped build â and ultimately unravel â Napoleon Bonaparteâs empire. In his new book, Napoleon and His Marshals, Roberts brings to life the extraordinary generals who served at Napoleonâs side, from the courageous Ney and flamboyant Murat to the tenacious MassĂŠna, iron-willed Davout, and meticulous Berthier.
In 1804, Napoleon created the Marshalate, the highest military honor of the French Empire, and over the next decade elevated 26 of his most accomplished generals to the rank. Roberts explores their personalities, ambitions, rivalries, and complex relationships with their emperor, revealing how Napoleonâs leadership both inspired fierce loyalty and fueled destructive competition among his marshals. Ultimately, only two of the 26 would ride beside him at Waterloo.
Drawing on years of scholarship on Napoleon and his era, Roberts offers a dramatic and richly detailed portrait of the men whose military brilliance helped create Napoleonâs extraordinary empire â and whose rivalries helped bring it down.
This event is a co-production with The Chartwell Society of Oregon, a chapter of the International Churchill Society.

âIâve always been interested in films about artists. I think because they end up being a conversation not just between filmmaker and subject in a traditional way but also between two uniquely creative people. This film is a really interesting study of that relationship and connection.â â Rob Lewis

Views and Brews: In the Range of Fire and Ice
After years of research, award-winning Seattle author David B. Williams joins Mount St. Helens Institute at a special Portland event for a conversation on his newly published book, In the Range of Fire and Ice: A Human and Natural History of Washingtonâs Cascades.
Blending human and natural history into a vivid portrait of one of North Americaâs most dynamic landscapes, In the Range of Fire and Ice is a lively, groundbreaking exploration of Washingtonâs Cascade Range. Drawing on conversations with anthropologists, park rangers, ecologists, and climate scientists, as well as firsthand experience, Williams brings readers into the mountains to uncover stories etched in the landscape over millennia.
From traditional Indigenous huckleberry harvesting grounds and ancient footpaths to erupting volcanoes, shifting glaciers, and forgotten mining camps, In the Range of Fire and Ice reveals the Cascades as a place of both deep time and constant change. While past logging, mining, and fires left lasting scars, the Cascades also tell powerful stories of recovery and resilienceâreturning wolverines and wolves, the remarkable rebirth of Mount St. Helens, and growing stewardship in the face of climate change. Through rich storytelling and careful research, Williams invites readers to see the Cascades not only as mountains, but as a living, evolving realm of fire, ice, and hope.

Technology has always shaped the way weâve stayed informed, expressed ourselves, and stayed connected as communities. Animal Tales: Kara LaReau & Rosanne Parry
In Kara LaReauâs novel Licorice, Kitty the cat is adopted from Mount Charles Animal Shelter and brought to her new home. While Maxâs house is certainly better than the shelter, a lingering presence haunts her new home. In this novel, our feline protagonist shares her experience facing the looming character of the old family cat. Like LaâReau, Rosanne Parry writes from a nonhuman perspective. In A Raven of the Rainforest, Parry writes about Westerly the raven and the prophecy that binds her to leadership, bravery, and hopefully glory. Both novels explore the pressure stand up to the reputation thrust upon them and overcoming the fear of fitting in. Moderated by Emily Chenoweth.
About Licorice:
A young and frightened kitten is brought starry-eyed into a new household. A boy named Max is trying desperately to get over the loss of his former beloved pet. But ghosts donât always enjoy being forgotten. Sometimes they have to make their presence known.
Both spine-chilling and heartwarming, funny and charming, Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor winning author Kara LaReau has written a story about fitting in, standing out, overcoming fear, and finding a place called home.
In her cage at the Mount Charles Animal Shelter, Kitty has no other choice but to be the captive audience of the opinionated Bunny Van Hopper. But itâs better than the woods. Kitty can still remember the rain that came and swept everything⌠everyone⌠away. Here, at least she has food and company, even if Bunnyâs words scare her. And then Max appears at the shelter. Max has adopted all sorts of pets over the years. Rumor has it that he treats all of his pets with care and kindness. And of all the animals at the shelter, he actually chooses herâa scrawny and scared kitten. Kitty is going to be home at last. But she canât seem to get Bunnyâs words out of her head as Max takes her away in her carrierâŚ
âYouâre going to regret this! I just know it!â Bunny Van Hopper cries. And perhaps Bunny is rightâŚ
There is a scent lingering in the house on 5 Manderley Lane. The scent rises from every chair leg, every carpet fiber, every throw pillow, even inside the bathtub. Everything smells like Licorice. It is the strongest upstairs in Maxâs room, almost overpowering. If the smell isnât enough, Duchess, the familyâs old parrot, wonât let Kitty forget that she is a replacement. And soon, Kitty finds herself trapped in the long shadow of the cat that came before her. But is it just a shadow? Or is there something really there on the other side of itâŚhaunting herâŚ
About A Raven of the Rainforest:
A stand-alone addition to the New York Times and Indie bestselling Voice of the Wilderness Novels by Rosanne Parry. Westerly the raven fears she wonât survive the prophecy she was born to fulfill in this enthralling animal survival story about destiny, leadership, and bravery.
On Westerly the ravenâs otherwise ink-black tail, one bright white feather stands out. Westerly stands out, too. She isnât like her brother and sisterâsheâs different. Everyone knows it, including the roostâs storykeeper, who proclaims that Westerly alone is destined to save her fellow ravens from a terrible fate. Questioning her destiny, isolated from her family, and full of doubt, Westerly takes to the sky, vowing never to return. But when a once-in-a-lifetime volcanic eruption finds her, she has no choice but to flee in the direction of home.
A Raven of the Rainforest is a stand-alone companion to Rosanne Parryâs bestselling Voice of the Wilderness novels, A Wolf Called Wander, A Whale of the Wild, A Horse Named Sky, and A Wolf Called Fire. Set in the temperate rainforests of the Pacific Northwest, A Raven of the Rainforest tells a gripping animal survival story about family, courage, faith, leadership, and hope. Illustrated in black-and-white throughout and impeccably researched, A Raven of the Rainforest is an excellent read-aloud for parents and teachers.
Destroy This House: Amanda Uhle
The Literary Arts Bookstore is pleased to welcome Amanda Uhle to celebrate her memoir, Destroy This House.
About the book:
For fans of The Glass Castle and The Liarsâ Club, a tender, heartbreaking, and hilarious memoir written with âunwavering affectionâ (ELLE) chronicling the challenges of growing up with a desperately scheming father, a mother plagued by an acute hoarding disorder, and parenting parents while seeking independence.
The Long familyâs love was fierce, their lifestyle bizarre, and their deceptions countless. Once her parents were gone, Amanda Uhle realized she was closer to them than anyone else, yet she found herself utterly confounded by the lives they had led.
Amandaâs striving fashion designer mother and her charismatic wheeler-dealer father wove a complex life together that spanned ten different homes across five states over forty perplexing years. Throughout her childhood, as her motherâs hoarding disorder flourished and her fatherâs schemes crumbled, contradictions abounded. They bartered for dental surgery and drove their massive Lincoln Town Car to the food bank. When financial ruin struck, they abandoned their repossessed mansion for humble parish housing, and Amandaâs father became a preacher. They swung between being filthy rich and dirt poor, devious and virtuous, lonely and loved, fake and real.
In this âiconic, only-in-America fable of desperate Midwestern dreamersâ (Dave Eggers, bestselling author of A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius), Amanda sets out to document her parentsâ unbelievable exploits and her own hard-won escape into independence. With humor and tenderness, Uhle has crafted a heartfelt and utterly unique memoir, capturing the raucousness, pain, joy, and ultimately, the boundless love that exists between all parents and children.
Survival: Emiko Jean & T Kira MÄhealani Madden
Novelists Emiko Jean (Before You Were Anne) and T Kira MÄhealani Madden (Whidbey) join moderator and author Marisa Siegel for a conversation on their most recent novels and the secrets and lies that chase their protagonists. Told through multiple perspectives, both authors create page-turning stories about webs of violence, and the fragile lies that threaten survival.
About Before You Were Anne:After a woman is killed and her daughter vanishes, detective Chelsey Calhoun uncovers a legacy of violence and survival that spans from Japan to Seattle in the new novel by the author of The Return of Ellie Black.
A murdered woman. A missing daughter. A truth buried across two continents.
Married, pregnant, and thriving in her career, Detective Chelsey Calhounâs life finally feels whole, until an explosive new case shatters everything. A mother is dead. Her sixteen-year-old daughter, Naomi, has disappeared. And the search will awaken questions about Chelseyâs own originsâquestions sheâs spent a lifetime afraid to ask.
The victim called herself Anne Walker. But she was born Rika Takahashi, and her journey from a remote Japanese farm to suburban Seattle conceals decades of deception. Across Tokyoâs shadowed underworld, an isolated Idaho town, and years of carefully constructed lies, Rika reinvented herself at every turn. But she was always runningâfrom someone, or something.
Now, Chelsey must find Naomi before she becomes the next victim. But the deeper she delves into Rikaâs hidden life, the more she discovers: some secrets are worth killing for. And the most dangerous truths may be the ones closest to home.
Told in three interwoven voices, Before You Were Anne is a gripping suspense novel about the lies that bind families and the sins that echo across generations.
About Whidbey:A stunning literary achievement and portrait of three women connected through one man in the aftermath of his murderâthe explosive and highly anticipated debut novel from beloved and award-winning memoirist, T Kira Madden.
Birdie Chang didnât know anything about Whidbey Island when she chose it, only that it was about as far away as she could get from her own life. Sheâs a woman on the run, desperate for an escape from the headlines back home and the look of concern in her girlfriendâs eyesâand from Calvin Boyer, the man who abused her as a child and whoâs now resurfaced. On her way, she has an unnerving encounter with a stranger on the ferry who offers her a proposition, a sinister solution, a plan for revenge.
But Birdie isnât the only girl Calvin harmed back then. Thereâs also Linzie King, a former reality TV star who recently wrote all about it in her bestselling memoir. Though the two women have never met, their stories intertwine. Once Birdie arrives on Whidbey, she finally cracks the bookâs spine, only to find too much she recognizes in its pages. Soon after, on the other side of the country, Calvinâs loving mother, Mary-Beth, receives a shocking phone call from the police: her only son has been murdered.
Calvinâs death sets into motion a series of events that sends each woman on a desperate search for answers. A complex whodunnit told from alternating points of view, Whidbey is searingly perceptive and astonishingly original. Exploring the long reach of violence and our flawed systems of incarceration and rehabilitation, this is a tense and provocative debut thatâs sure to incite crucial questions about the pursuit of justice and who has real power over a story: the one who lives it, or the one who tells it?

A Thousand Flames: Book Launch and Signing
Celebrate the release of A Thousand Flames, the debut poetry collection by Corey S. Pressman. Corey S. Pressman's debut collection, A Thousand Flames, offers poems of secular devotion in which a bird feeder can stand as the axis mundi and the bees have a god of their own. Across twelve sections, they travel from a Rockland County childhood to a hilltop in the fog, and as far back as the rooftops of Neolithic ĂatalhĂśyĂźk. Each poem asks you to slow down and stay a little longer than expected.
"Corey Pressman is a magical human - magical art, magical writing. His finely made poems are bells of vision and clarity to help us 'stay the same changing.'" - Naomi Shihab Nye

Imagining Freedom: Toni Morrison and the Revolutionary Work of Words
When Toni Morrison declares that she âcan't wait for the ultimate liberation theory to imagine its practice and do its work,â she raises an issue at the heart of modern democratic life: What does freedom mean in the shadow of racial slavery and colonialism? While Morrison's literary achievements are widely celebrated, her contributions as a ârevolutionary political thinkerâ remain underappreciated. Lawrie Balfour approaches Morrisonâs political thought through her account of âword-work,â or the creative use of language, as a practice of freedom. First, Balfour considers Morrisonâs defense of the necessity of writers to the flourishing of democracy and her reflections on the political implications of her own literary practice. Second, Balfour examines Morrisonâs use of the language of âsovereigntyâ to convey what writers do, when they create worlds out of words. Third, she asks what Morrison might say about the part her novel Beloved played in the 2021 governorâs race in Virginia and concludes with some thoughts about the political urgency of Morrisonâs word-work today.
Lawrie Balfour is James Hart Professor of Politics and a member of the American Studies faculty at the University of Virginia, where she offers courses on race, gender, democracy, and literature. She is the author of Toni Morrison: Imagining Freedom; Democracyâs Reconstruction: Thinking Politically with W. E. B. Du Bois; and The Evidence of Things Not Said: James Baldwin and the Promise of American Democracy. Lawrieâs current projects include a series of essays on reparations for slavery and a study of the Black feminist visions of the journal Freedomways (1961-1985).

Not-not Midlife Crisis: Priyanka Mattoo & Emily Nemens
Authors Priyanka Mattoo (How to Be Less Useful) and Emily Nemens (Clutch) sit down to discuss their latest books that explore the pleasures and challenges of midlife. Whether in the fictional world of Clutch, or the personal stories in How to Be Less Useful, both authors question our professional prioritiesand the joy that really matters most. Moderated by author Maris Kreizman.
About How to Be Less Useful:A delightful book about reclaiming pleasure in mid-lifeâa potent mix of self-help and memoir, from one of todayâs wittiest, wisest voices.
âI have done everything right, and I have missed everything.â
When did our lives become entirely about efficiency and optimization? Especially as office workers, as parents, as consumers, as exercisers and healthy eaters. Wouldnât it be nice if we could all be less useful?
With self-deprecating humor, devastating insight, and bracing honesty, Priyanka Mattoo shares her own journey toward being a less useful human, to investigate why pleasure gets back-burnered in American culture.
Think about what we choose to systematically cut out or overlook as we mature: Solo travel. Dessert. Sweaty dancing. âPointlessâ hangs with friends. And then there are the activities that used to be fun and have somehow lost their luster, usually in the decade between 30 and 40: Cooking (ruined by exhaustion). Bad tv (the algorithm). Other humans (bandwidth). Eating at restaurants (Instagram).
Mattoo takes on the zeitgeist, delivering invaluable, laugh-out-loud entertaining life lessons without an ounce of preachiness or pressure. She looks at where pleasure begins, what it serves, how we learn to repress itâin families, in friendships and romantic relationships, in jobs. And she shows us a way back: to identify and accept the things that give us pleasure, then to welcome them into our lives. What if, instead of being useful, we could all learn how to be happier, lighter, more present, more engaged? How to Be Less Useful is refreshing, funny, sparklingly astute, unignorableâa book for the current moment.
About Clutch:A close-knit group of women navigate mid-lifeâs biggest challengesâmarriage, career, addictionâin what Lynn Steger Strong calls a âsharp, funny, utterly engrossingâ novel.
âWhite Lotus with more sincerity and heart.â âLos Angeles Times

Finding Wonderful: Matt Mikalatos
Join The Literary Arts Bookstore & Cafe for an evening of Hollywood nostalgia and holiday classics!
Weâre thrilled to host local author Matt Mikalatos to celebrate his latest, Finding Wonderful: Hopeful Lessons from Jimmy Stewart and Itâs a Wonderful Life.
About the book:
Itâs a Wonderful Life impacted the lives of many, but no one got more from it than star Jimmy Stewart, who credited the film with giving his life new purpose post-World War II service. Learn the lessons on faith, community, kindness, and more from Stewart and the iconic film with this inspiring gift book.
Beloved star and one of Hollywoodâs greatest actors, Stewart achieved fame, fortune, and acclaimâbut found that none of it guaranteed happiness. Leaving it all behind to serve as a combat pilot in World War II, he returned home changed by loss and searching for meaning. But while filming the perennial Christmas classic Itâs a Wonderful Life, Stewart learned how to heal and live with gratitude and grace with the help of friends, faith, and purpose.
