You might wonder why all the recent fuss about knitting, crocheting, and sewing. Volunteers from the Hands On craft groups will say they love getting together to socialize with new friends and marvel over the creativity of items made. But those who really benefit from our crafting are the recipients of the handmade treasures. Join in this project and knit, machine sew, or crochet anything baby to be donated to Rose Haven, Virginia Garcia Clinic, Ronald McDonald House, Family Peace Center of Washington County, and Binky Patrol - Beaverton. A handmade item will make a loving impression on a new mom and baby. Another option - make a garment for a toddler/child/youth to be used to help diffuse trauma & negative impacts on the younger set when they have to be admitted to the hospital. Examples of what we make: Booties, bibs, burp cloths car seat blankets, crochet hats, blankets, for Virginia Garcia Clinic and nursing covers for the hospital etc. We make: new, single layer, tied fleece blankets for children and teens for Rose Haven and Ronald McDonald house. In the winter, we sew warm fleece hats and new seasonal crochet or knits to all ages. Hospitals are not accepting yarn-based items due to Covid and RSV. We provide newborn and hats to foster parents, midwifery ctrs., pregnancy resource ctrs.,0-5 teen-parent programs, and need based, school clothing closets. Things to note: 1. All volunteers must know how to knit, or *MACHINE* sew, or crochet. This (unfortunately) is not an educational/teaching experience around these skills. The opporunity is group based in that volunteers come with projects in mind and materials on hand. We gather to support each other in completing projects while centering the needs of babies and their parents. 2.Volunteers will be asked to drop off the donations to the Volunter Leaders home (near Providence St. Vincent Medical Center) or make arrangements with the Volunteer Leader for donation drop off of the donated pieces. 3. All completed donation items need to be washed prior to donation. The baby items must be scent free, please wash without a drier sheet. Hospitals do not allow donation that have scents and animal hair. All items must be cleaned for clients before drop off. Thank you! Project Requirements: Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older to attend this project. Any volunteers inviting a youth guest (anyone under 18) must stay with them the entire time. Volunteer Opportunity Help create a welcoming and inclusive community gathering by greeting guests and engaging with children, seniors, adults with disabilities, and caregivers to foster connection and belonging. About the Program Miah Families mission is to ignite hope and belonging through regular connection among children, families, seniors, caregivers, and adults with disabilities. About the Project Volunteers will help complete the mission by making the guests feel welcomed, connected, and thriving for the afternoon. Volunteers for the day will help with the set-up and take-down of the event. They will be stationed at either a food/snack table, a craft table, a game table, the welcome table, or as a greeter. Each volunteer will make the guests feel welcomed for the meet-up. One main role of the volunteer, is to walk around and engage with the guests. Miah works with adults with disabilities, seniors, children, and the caretakers. Volunteers will learn skills in communicating with people other than themselves. They will learn to interact with adults with disabilities, seniors, and children. The goal of the meet-up is for group involvement, that better together is better than being alone. Let’s spend a Sunday doing some good and getting to know each other along the way! Join our 30s & 40s Singles Group to support athletes at Special Olympics Oregon’s Beaverton Regional Aquatics competition on Sunday, November 1.

Expect swimming, teamwork, plenty of cheering, and a chance to connect with other community-minded singles. The event coordinator is excited to have our group help!

We have two exciting ways to participate based on how involved you want to be.

🙌 Path 1: Come volunteer directly with us

No sports knowledge, athletic ability, or previous volunteer experience needed. The Special Olympics Oregon team will train you onsite and assign your role at check-in.

You might help with:

Athlete escorts: Guide swimmers from staging to their lanes and then to awards.
Timing: Time races and call the finish order.
Results: Deliver and record race results.
Awards: Prepare medals and ribbons and help with presentations.
Developmental skills: Help with staging, escorting, and timing for the morning skills competition.

Have relevant experience? Let the team know at check-in!

You can choose between a full-day shift of about 8–9 hours or a half-day shift of about 4–4.5 hours, depending on availability.

All volunteers receive a Special Olympics Oregon T-shirt, and full-day volunteers receive lunch.

Giant Collaborative Neurographic Art

Church of Art's collaborative neurographics is a mindfulness-based creative activity that provides therapeutic relaxation through intuitive mark-making on a grand scale. For this mindfulness-based collaborative art activity, Church of Art will cover a long row of tables with a roll of paper and acrylic paint pens in a variety of sizes and colors. Participants will move freely around the table, filling the paper with sweeping, colorful doodles to the sounds of calming music. The giant scale allows for whole-arm movements, which signal brains to move out of fight-or-flight mode and into a state of mental relaxation and improved focus. The collaborative aspect of this workshop teaches one to let go of perfection and expectation through shared creative exploration, while working large encourages greater freedom of expression.

Neurographic art is a relatively new form of focused, intentional mark-making that uses curved, bold lines, vibrant colors and calming patterns. Physician and neurographics practitioner Ruben Halperin, M.D., will be the guide, co-facilitating this workshop with artist and Church of Art founder, Erika Halperin.

Immerse yourself in this beneficial form of meditative doodling and experience the mood-boosting effect of creativity coupled with community gathering.

Using paper and acrylic markers. All materials and supplies are provided by the studio.

Tickets Include:

2 hours of guided creative exploration in a supportive, friendly environment with all supplies included.
Light snacks and non-alcoholic beverages are included.

We’ll work to clear this remote trail of brush, logs and other debris, and improve tread where needed.

We’ll drive to the top of Horsetail Creek Trail and work our way down. The first few work days won’t involve much hiking, but the hike will become longer as we work toward the Bell Creek junction.

You should plan to participate in this trail party for its entirety. For safety reasons, please do not arrive late or expect to be able to leave early.

Visit Portland Japanese Garden to learn a method of ikebana that takes the beauty of this Japanese artform and puts it into a tiny form! Nana Goto Bellerud, Branch Director of Sogetsu Portland, will teach a basic introduction to ikebana, a Japanese and unique approach to flower arrangement that translates to “living flowers” or “giving life to flowers.” She will be focusing on miniature arrangements. No previous experience is needed.

The Sogetsu School of Ikebana believes ikebana can be practiced anytime, anywhere, by anyone. The three main elements designers use are line, color, and mass, with an emphasis on the designer’s individual artistic expression and creativity. Miniature ikebana adds an additional layer of nuance.

“When making the miniature ikebana of Sogetsu, we first look for small, used items such as shot glasses or seashells,” Bellerud shares. “Original vessels can be made of soft metals or clay. After the container has been chosen, we consider the plant materials. We carefully observe the different parts–petals, pistils, stamens, fruits, leaves, branches, and stems—to make new discoveries of their distinctive appearance.  Then we combine the containers with plant parts to create a unique micro-world.”

Participants will first attend a public ikebana demonstration at 1:15pm in the Cathy Rudd Cultural Corner alongside visitors to the Garden. The demonstration will cover the basic concepts, techniques, and tools of ikebana.

Following the demonstration, workshop participants will be taken into their exclusive workshop in the Yanai Family Classroom. Beyond simply producing a beautiful work of art with flowers and natural objects, Bellerud will show you how ikebana explores artistic concepts such as balance, contrast, and negative space. During the workshop, participants will create three basic miniature arrangements in very small vessels, which will be provided by the instructor.

Space is limited to 18 participants. All tools will be provided. The workshop fee includes a set of three unique mini vases and the plant materials used in the workshop, which participants will take home after the workshop. Registration fees are non-refundable.

The Sogetsu School is known for its willingness to explore new ideas and materials. The founder, Sofu Teshigahara, broke away from tradition in 1927 to establish his new school based on the belief that anyone can create ikebana anywhere, and with almost anything. The Sogetsu philosophy advocates that ikebana should be part of a lifestyle, appreciated by many people from all over the world, rather than being considered an exclusive aspect of Japanese culture to be enjoyed by a limited number of people.

Join Eco Club and the Moreau Center for Service and Justice to give a little TLC to the local neighborhood after Halloween festivities. After holidays like Halloween, we tend to see a spike in litter on and around campus and we have the opportunity to change that on November 1st from 1 to 3pm! We will walk along Willamette Blvd and around through N Fiske Ave, N Yale St, and N Van Houten Ave. At the start, meet us for check in on the walkway between the Chiles Center and Joe Etzel Baseball Field on N Portsmouth Ave. There, we'll have all supplies provided including gloves, garbage bags, vests, and grabbers. We'll also have snacks and donuts available to kick off the event. This event is open to the UP community as well as other neighborhood locals and anyone who wants to volunteer. We will have restrooms available on campus, and there is plenty of parking available. Please register in advance so we make sure to have enough cleanup supplies. Please bring your own trash grabber if you have one. All ages are welcome. We recommend working in pairs or small groups, dressing for the weather, and bringing a waterbottle. For years, rave parents have had to choose — leave the dance community behind, or leave the kids at home. We don't think that should be a choice.

Dance Mode brings the floor to the whole family. We believe the next generation deserves to grow up inside this culture — to learn PLUR (Peace ✌️, Love ❤️, Unity 🌍, Respect 🙏) not as a slogan, but as something they felt with you, on the floor, holding your hand.

This isn't just a party. It's a chance to bond with your kids over the same music, lights, and connection that shaped you — and pass it down.

WHAT TO EXPECT

🦄 The Flow: We open with a 30-minute warm-up — simple movement together, getting comfortable in the space as a family. From there we build into higher-energy dancing on the main floor. We close with a 30-minute cool-down, where we come back together and acknowledge the dance community we're building.

🎵 The Music: A curated DJ set that mixes kid favorites right alongside grown-up House and EDM classics — curated for the mixed crowd, with something for everyone on the floor.

🎨 Activities: Sparkly face painting with gems, plus a kandi-making station — everyone can make one bracelet for themselves and one to share, a hands-on way for kids to learn Peace, Love, Unity, and Respect and what it means to pass those values to others.

🧘 Sensory Refuge Room: A quiet space on-site for kids (or adults) who need a break from the sound and lights, with coloring and fidgets.

Inkling Studio: Community and Printmaking in Portland, 1981–2009

For more than twenty-five years, Inkling Studio, a cooperative printmaking workshop, operated out of a storefront on SW Corbett Avenue. Liza Jones was the organizing force and spirit of the atelier, which soon attracted artists eager to practice their craft in a supportive, vibrant environment, who were welcome to join the group via application and portfolio review. Over the decades, Inkling Studio served more than 100 members working in a variety of printing methods.

A collaborative spirit animated Inkling Studio. It was not a teaching studio–artists were expected to be fully competent printmakers before they joined–but creative cooperation permeated the atmosphere. Members fondly recall the warm environment and the opportunities to watch and learn from some of the best talents in Portland. The esprit de corps is perhaps best illustrated by the six portfolios published by Inkling Studio in which members and closely allied printmakers contributed their designs.

This exhibition celebrates the incredible contribution of Inkling Studio and its members to the vibrant art scene of Portland. Membership changed over the years, but a lasting commitment to printmaking and community endured. The Museum is proud to offer a selection of the hundreds of prints made at Inkling Studio.

After a successful season of paddling and rentals, it’s time to tuck away the Cook Family Park fleet for winter! We need volunteers to help transport canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards from Cook Family Park to our storage shed near Sherwood.

Volunteers will help load boats onto trailers and vehicle roof racks, transport them to storage, and unload them for the winter. Have a vehicle roof rack or utility trailer? We’d especially appreciate your help!

As the days get shorter and the nights get longer, it’s time to Light Up the Night! Join SMART for a fun, family-friendly community bike ride celebrating bright bikes, creative lights, and being seen while riding after dark.

We’ll begin to gather at the SMART Welcome Center at 5:00 PM for a pre-ride bike decorating party. Bring your bike and get creative with reflective materials and lights before we head out together at 6:00 PM.

Riders are encouraged to decorate their bikes with their brightest, boldest, and coolest lights and help us shine a light on the importance of visibility when walking, biking, and rolling after dark.

Thanksgiving Flower Centerpiece Class – Reserve by Nov. 15

Get ready for Thanksgiving hosting. Learn how to build your own Thanksgiving flower centerpiece, how to care for it, and make it last. Marti from Flowers by Burkhardts will be here on Nov. 22 to provide the flowers, materials and session where you will make your own beautiful flower arrangement. It will be perfect as a table centerpiece, on a fireplace mantel, or even as a host gift, and you can also transform it for use with December/Christmas and New Year holidays. Please sign up early—by Nov. 15 so there is enough time to order fresh flowers to bring for the number of friends and participants coming. Feel free to bring a friend, flowers always pair great with wine and fun! A complimentary glass of wine will be provided.

Celebrate the end of the volunteer season with us as plants and wildlife prepare for hibernation, and we prepare to welcome the winter season.

Join PP&R for our final volunteer event of 2026 at Wilkes Park for a family-friendly volunteer event to help with gardening tasks like weeding, pruning, mulching, and adding new plants to the park.

This is a great opportunity to learn more about gardening and connect with your neighbors and community. Plant care activities may vary monthly. Tools and instructions provided. Open to all skills and abilities, no experience is required to participate.

Site Accessibility

Activities may require bending, stooping, or kneeling close to the ground. There is a paved pathway throughout the park. Depending on the day and tasks, the surfaces to travel on may vary, but many of the tasks will be adjacent to a paved pathway.

There is an ADA accessible restroom (Portland Loo) on site. Many areas of the park have open exposure to the sun.
