Portland Book Festival welcomes Molly and Meherwan Irani, the husband-and-wife team behind Ashevilleâs nationally celebrated Chai Pani Restaurant Group. Their flagship restaurant, Chai Pani, was named Outstanding Restaurant by the James Beard Foundation in 2022.
This year, Molly and Meherwan each bring a new book to the table. Meherwan has written No. 1 Best Indian Cookbook in the World: At-Home Recipes from the Streets, Truck Stops, Villages, and Palaces of India. Mollyâs Service Ready: A Story of Love, Restaurants, and the Power of Hospitality was published earlier this year. Together, the books offer two very differentâand deeply connectedâperspectives on food, restaurants, and hospitality.
In celebration of Diwaliâthe Hindu festival of lights, marked by food, gathering, and celebrationâMolly and Meherwan will join their longtime friend Chef Troy MacLarty at Bollywood Theater on Alberta Street for a collaboration. Bollywood Theater will serve a special menu inspired by recipes from Meherwanâs book alongside its own Diwali-inspired menu. Letâs spend a Sunday doing some good and getting to know each other along the way! Join our 30s & 40s Singles Group to support athletes at Special Olympics Oregonâs Beaverton Regional Aquatics competition on Sunday, November 1.
Expect swimming, teamwork, plenty of cheering, and a chance to connect with other community-minded singles. The event coordinator is excited to have our group help!
We have two exciting ways to participate based on how involved you want to be.
đ Path 1: Come volunteer directly with us
No sports knowledge, athletic ability, or previous volunteer experience needed. The Special Olympics Oregon team will train you onsite and assign your role at check-in.
You might help with:
Have relevant experience? Let the team know at check-in!
You can choose between a full-day shift of about 8â9 hours or a half-day shift of about 4â4.5 hours, depending on availability.
All volunteers receive a Special Olympics Oregon T-shirt, and full-day volunteers receive lunch.
đ How to join as a volunteer
Please register promptly if youâd like to volunteer, since shifts have limited spaces. Follow the arrival and check-in instructions for your selected shift.
đ A small commitment that makes a big difference
The event team relies on registered volunteers to keep the competition running smoothly. Please choose a shift you can commit to attending in full and plan ahead for the day.
Of course, unexpected things happen! If you can no longer volunteer, please notify the Special Olympics coordinator promptly, update your volunteer registration, and update your Meetup RSVP too. Keeping everyone informed as timely as possible gives the team time to adjust.
đŁ Path 2: Prefer to cheer? Join the audience!
You can also support the athletes from the sidelines. If committing to volunteering in a shift isnât the right fit, or the shifts have filled, come enjoy the competition and help us give the swimmers an enthusiastic audience!
Please let me know whether youâre volunteering or coming to cheer, so I can coordinate our group. Only people registered directly with Special Olympics Oregon will be counted as volunteers.
Which ever path you choose, weâre happy to have you!
Come lend a hand, bring your cheering voice, and spend a Sunday supporting our greater Portland community. đ
This ever-popular event will be emceed by local entertainer Enrique E. Andrade, who is a member of the ensemble cast of Marigolds y Memorias, this yearâs centerpiece theatrical attraction for the Milagro Central Eastside Muertos Celebration. Originally from Mexico City, Andrade is an accomplished actor and voice-over artist who has appeared in more than two dozen Milagro productions, as well as working at Portland Story Theater and 3rd Angle Music Ensemble. His screen credits include Leverage, Grimm, and The Librarians. Guests will dine on a uniquely prepared three-course dinner catered by beloved Portland restauranteur Lucy de Leon, featuring dishes from both her new downtown hotspot, Madrina Cocina Mexicana, and the Eastside La Patroncita, famous for serving up a fusion of time-honored recipes and innovative creations, lovingly prepared with the freshest ingredients and the essence of home. The In Bocca books are a curious and beautiful collection of 20 Italian cookbooks, each devoted to a different region of Italy. Originally published in the 1970s, theyâre filled with recipes, hand-drawn illustrations, folk art, and wonderfully wonky English translations, offering a glimpse into the food and character of Italy from region to region. Long out of print, theyâve become cult objects for collectors and lovers of Italian food.
For the past three years, Cathy Whims and the Nostrana team have cooked their way through the entire collection, creating 19 dinners: one for each book. Now, for the Portland Book Festival, that journey comes to an end with Roma in Bocca the 20th book.
For this special finale, Cathy Whims is welcoming Italia in Bocca director Robert Serrini, an expert and passionate champion of these remarkable books. Robert will mingle with guests throughout the evening and document the dinner as part of a short film about Roma in Bocca. He also dreams of one day seeing the full collection published once again, bringing these quirky, art-filled books back into the hands of a new generation.
Whether youâve followed the series from the beginning or are discovering these peculiar books for the first time, come take one last trip Italy in Bocca with us.
Cathy Whims recently published her own culinary book: The Italian Summer Kitchen: Recipes for La Dolce Vita. During this event her book will be available for purchase and signing.
Reservations required. Limited seating available. Paid reservations sold by Nostrana nostrana.com/romabook

Celebrating over 15 years of serving free pancakes and introducing you to some of the nation's leading emerging artists. The LA-based event originated in 2009 and has since popped up more than 500 times in 35+ cities around Europe and North America.

This is no stuffy wine-and-cheese, pretentious, someone-gag-me art event. Itâs an innovative reimagining of the art show concept. A welcoming vibe for up-and-coming artists to sell and strut their stuff in a free-verse, anything-goes environment.

Project Information:
The Alder Flat trail was affected by the 2020 Riverside Fire. Over the course of the summer, some tread damage has occured that the Forest Service is requesting we handle. We will be addressing that and any downed trees/limbs we encounter along the way.
Hiking information:
The trail is fairly accessible, being short and relatively flat. We donât have good intel on where exactly the trail issues are, so weâll plan on hiking the entire trail, unless I can get out and scout it ahead of time.
You should plan to participate in this trail party for its entirety. For safety reasons, please do not arrive late or expect to be able to leave early.
Event details:
Detailed event information, including directions to the meeting location, will be provided to registrants via email 48 hours prior to the event. If youâre volunteering for the first time, read this blog by a volunteer to know what to expect at your first trail party.
What to bring:
What to wear:
LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: TKO recognizes that the trails we work on travel through the traditional lands of many Indigenous tribes and communities. We are the most recent in a long line of stewards to this land, and it is our responsibility to do so with humility and respect. We are grateful to these tribes and their descendants for being the original and continuing stewards of these spaces, and encourage everyone to go beyond a land acknowledgment by supporting Indigenous communities and organizations in your area.
ACCOMMODATION REQUESTS: TKO seeks to make our events inclusive of people of all backgrounds and abilities. If you would like to discuss potential accommodations to allow for your participation in this event, please click here to complete a short Google survey. TKO staff will then contact you to discuss options. Please note: available accommodations will vary by event and typically need to be requested a minimum of two weeks in advance. If you have any questions, reach out to us by clicking Contact near the bottom of this page.
EQUITY & INCLUSION: TKO seeks to make Oregonâs trails a place where people can go to connect with nature & one another. Not everyone feels safe or welcome in the outdoors due to issues like racism, bias, and hate. We commit to being part of the solution to this problem and to enact change. Conduct, speech, or expressions that target any individual or group will not be tolerated by TKO.
PERSONAL SAFETY: Your physical and emotional safety is our number one priority. If a personâs actions or comments make you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, you may: interrupt directly, tell a crew leader, and/or inform TKO staff via the post-event survey.
While TKO no longer requires masking/vaccination for our events, we do support those who choose to mask for their own safety. We ask participants to respect the health of folks who wear masks by distancing or wearing a mask while in close proximity.

Party bus transportation from a central location in Portland will be offered to all guests for an additional cost at the time of checkout when you purchase your ticket. Please join and extend the evening of fun, and make sure you get home safely.

Come together with friends, family, and neighbors for an evening of appreciation, remembrance, and community as we honor those who have served our country.
The Portland Grief House invites you to join The Lost Table, a welcoming space to gather in community, remember those weâve lost, and share in the traditions that help us keep them close. Bring a dish, pull up a chair, and make a place at the table for the dead. Grief can be hard to understand, and sometimes what we need most is community, ritual, conversation, and food.
Together, weâll explore how different cultures and traditions call to, honor, and make offerings to those who have died. In the spirit of DĂa de Muertos, weâll create a shared space where the living and the dead can gather around the same table.
Weâll begin with a creative activity led by Mario Mesquita, inviting us to reflect on memory, food, and our relationships with those weâve lost. Participants will be introduced to the ritual elements that will carry us through the evening.
Laura Green will lead a community conversation about intercultural traditions of DĂa de Muertos and other ways communities call to and remember their dead. Participants will have an opportunity to share stories, traditions, and memories, and to dedicate an offering to someone they have lost.
Bea Yeh will introduce the tradition of Hungry Ghost and lead us in making an offering to the dead. Weâll set places at our table for those who are no longer with us and share food as an act of remembrance and connection.
Our community offerings and tributes will be gathered at Ximena Moralesâs altar, creating a shared space of remembrance that connects the different traditions and offerings brought into the room.
Throughout the evening, weâll create something together through words, offerings, and remembrance. Weâll dedicate a community poem to the dead and close our gathering with a collective ritual of words, sound, and stillness.
Please bring:
The Portland Grief House is honored to continue this tradition, originally started by Side Yard Farm. The Teen Table is a relaxed, hands-on cooking experience for teens who want to feel more comfortable in the kitchen, learn to cook for themselves, and spend time with other teens who enjoy good food.
Whether theyâre brand new to cooking or already have some experience, weâll focus on building practical skills and confidence. Rather than following strict recipes, teens will learn how to think like a home cookâhow to make decisions, work with what they have, adjust as they go, and turn simple ingredients into food theyâre excited to eat.
Weâll also cover meal planning, kitchen organization, time management, using ingredients thoughtfully, making adjustments, and cleaning up. Most importantly, teens will gain the confidence to cook without needing a recipe to tell them exactly what to do.
Every class ends with everyone sitting down together to enjoy what weâve madeâbecause cooking is more fun when itâs shared, and learning how to feed yourself well is a pretty great skill to have.
The goal is simple: to help teens feel at home in the kitchen, make food they enjoy, and learn how to take care of themselves through cooking.
November Menu:
Herb Roasted Chicken
Seasonal Vegetable Sides
December Menu:
Veggie Chili
Cornbread
What to expect:
Price is per person and includes the class, all ingredients, and dinner.
Each class is hands-on and centered around preparing a meal together. Weâll cook, talk, experiment, ask questions, make mistakes, and figure things out along the way. Thereâs no pressure to already know what youâre doing or to be a âchefââ just a welcoming space to learn at your own pace.
Some food allergies and intolerances can be accommodated, but please note that we may cook with eggs, dairy, nuts, poultry, beef, pork, and fish. If youâre unsure whether the class will be a good fit for your dietary needs, please inquire before registering.
This series is for kids aged 13-18
