Powaqqatsi: Live with The Philip Glass Ensemble

Special Concerts

Overview

The Philip Glass Ensemble returns to Portland for Powaqqatsi, an artful cinematic experience that speaks to the impact of modernization and industrialization on traditional ways of living. Seen through the lens of communities across the globe, the narrative is amplified by compositions from Philip Glass that feature native, classical, and electronic instruments. Enjoyed alone or as the second in The Qatsi Trilogy, you won’t want to miss this thought-provoking performance from The Philip Glass Ensemble and conductor Michael Riesman.

po.waq.qa.tsi (from the Hopi language, powaq sorcerer + qatsi life) n., an entity, a way of life, that consumes the life forces of other beings in order to further its own life.

Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812

Lewis & Clark College615 South Palatine Hill Road

From the celebrated and award-winning composer Dave Malloy comes Natasha, Pierre and The Great Comet of 1812, an electropop opera based on a scandalous slice of Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace. Young and impulsive, Natasha Rostova arrives in Moscow to await the return of her fiancé from the front lines. When she falls under the spell of the roguish Anatole, it is up to Pierre, a family friend in the middle of an existential crisis, to pick up the pieces of her shattered reputation. Following a critically exalted premiere at Ars Nova in New York City, a subsequent off-Broadway transfer and an acclaimed run on Broadway, this award-winning musical expands the possibilities for the genre with its daring score and bold storytelling.

Hung Dance

Choreographer Lai Hung-Chung makes dances of striking beauty and intention. “Birdy,” his captivating signature work for Hung Dance, moves between suspense and explosive energy, between the weight of tradition and the pull toward something new. Hung Dance blends traditional Chinese arts, including tai chi, Peking Opera, and classical Chinese music, with contemporary dance technique and driving electronic music, creating work that is poetic and rhythmic at once. What audiences see on stage is a world in constant transformation, where bodies bend and resist, images linger, and the tension between holding on and letting go becomes the dance itself.

Galan Trio

Greece’s Galan Trio performs at Pacific University as part of their Kinesis tour, bringing a program of American composers hailing from the West Coast, including Pacific University faculty member Ryan Francis. Their appearance is underwritten by the Elise Elliot Trust and is presented under the auspices of Greece’s Ministry of Culture.

”Kinesis” is Galan Trio’s attempt to explore the music of contemporary American composers
by bringing their works together in an original, multifaceted concert program. The project
draws from collaboration between Galan Trio and professors of composition from select
U.S. universities, and from the notion of “Kinesis.” Kinesis is an undirected movement of a
cell, organism, or part, in response to an external stimulus. In Greek, Kinesis means
movement, motion. Motion is a fundamental characteristic of all living beings; motion is
what all musicians worldwide have desired during the last couple of years; motion alludes to
continuity, and it’s a promise for the future of “Kinesis” itself.

Ticket Prices: $21 general admission. Free for Pacific students, faculty and staff. Online ticket sales only. Purchase tickets at https://www.pacificu.edu/musictickets.

Lucy Bedroque

Los Angeles based nineteen year old Jeremiah Mark (they/he) released their first full-length endeavor under the moniker Lucy Bedroque, their deadAir Records debut. With no prior singles, the breakneck seventeen track shotgun blast of Digicore and Hardcore Hip Hop, titled “Unmusique” has established them as a bastion of these underground sounds. The release date coincided with their first show on the Jane Remover and Dazegxd tour “TURN UP OR DIE”, along with a full west coast run.

Leading up to this moment, Lucy Bedroque gained a cult following in the shadowy sectors of the online underground, with a break-out debut LP “Sisterhood” as Lostrushi. This is the name that raised them to notoriety alongside peers 9lives, prettifun, and egobreak. The new material continues further down the same path, combining cutthroat rage, with the eclecticism and sensitivities of Stereolab, Radiohead, and Deftones.

While forging their distinct multi-media surrealism, Mark also found a penchant for customized linguistics and contorting the English language. Most notably, the title “Glutmother” (the name fans chose for a hyper-active Subreddit) graces the cover art of the debut and the packaging of “Unmusique. “The role of motherhood here is representative of a superiority to everything around it. But beyond humans, it’s a reference to mother nature and creation.” They explain. As for why it’s juxtaposed with gluttony, that’s because “People want more than anyone can handle, and I’ve responded to it with a perfectionist’s mindset.” They combine into a deep resonance of identity that’d easily evade a new listener.

Born on Cape Cod, Cooper B. Handy started releasing music as LUCY in 2009. In the years since, the Western Massachusetts-based singer/producer has made a career of self-releasing music and videos, unpolished & posted in near real time. LUCY’s captivating live performance has earned him a cult following on the DIY circuit, playing shows in basements and warehouses across the country. His music is experimental and raw – at times even abrasive. His GarageBand-based production has never swayed far from the sample packs and synth sounds he started writing music with 14 years ago. Aggressively prolific, Handy has amassed an extensive catalog that is both eccentric and earnest. His music channels a sense of creative exploration, and his lyrics pack real wisdom into unassuming one-liners.

Centrifugal Force Machine with Glori and Runoti

Industrial techno, darkwave and synth-punk converge as CFM, Glori and Runoti map Portland’s darker electronic underground.

Centrifugal Force Machine - is an industrial techno project from the mind and body of Court Knight, based out of Portland, Oregon — circa 2025. CFM combines components of hard techno and 80’s industrial with lyrics pertaining to death and the desire to die. Their project is entrenched from their former career as a mortician, and the name and visceral energy both draw from that experience.

Glori - is the solo electronic music project/alter ego of Annalisa Rose from Portland, OR. Using hardware synthesizers and sirenlike vocals, she builds restless, shadowy dreamscapes with pulsing darkwave rhythms. Beneath strobing pink lights, black widow beats entwine menace and longing, daring you to dance until you’re dead. Glori plans to release her long-awaited debut EP later this year.

Runoti - is an exploration of darkwave and synth punk. Returning from hiatus with a new EP driven by classic synth sounds and punchy bass lines this show is the first preview of what’s to come.

Quadeca makes genre-defiant music that bends experimental hip-hop, neo-psychedelia, alternative R&B, pop, bossa nova, and more to his whims. Over the years, he transitioned from a career in content creation to a more personal artistry. He started out making videos where he replicated the styles of various popular rappers, eventually parlaying this viral online content into attention for his own original music. Quadeca replaced the trends and tropes of commercial rap that made up his earlier work with a sharpened focus on musicianship, melody, and atmospheric songwriting on his 2022 album I Didn't Mean to Haunt You. The one-man band without a plan, Mattress started in 2006. To quote a sassy pal (with initials IB): “You are wildly unpopular for that amount of time.” Amen. Who cares? Art for art’s sake. For the first time ever–Mattress is putting together a full band for this show. 5 guitars? 8 keyboards? 12 drummers? Yodelers and a glass harmonica? Probably.

Mattress has made some friends over 20 years and put together this stellar bill (more of a mini-fest), bringing together acts he met 20 years ago and 2 years ago. Check this out:

Black Shelton (solo), a one-man band powerhouse of wit, sleaze and electro boogie. Songs "I'm Back in the Doghouse Again" and “White Lover” will warp your mind.

Dragging an Ox Thru Water fingerpicking melody noise glitch heart string puller.

THRONES Joe Preston is coming out of semi-retirement to do this show. Hopefully this will get some elder goths and heshers out of their LazyBoys and into the show.

Joe Von Appen, the monologue performance semi-comedy satirist who has toured with Mattress for close to 10,000 miles. He will host the show; his dry wit will confuse and entertain most in attendance.

Special guest TBA, probably famous, very name-droppable.

The Waters of Non-Existance - Vishnu in Portland - World Premiere

"PORTLAND, OR — On Sunday, November 22, 2026, New York-based pianist, composer, and storyteller David Haney brings the world premiere of The Waters of Non-Existence: Vishnu to Portland, Oregon — an immersive concert work for piano, bass clarinet, bass, and spoken narration. The performance takes place at Augustana Lutheran Church at 4:00 PM and features two of Portland's most celebrated creative musicians: multi-reed master Ike Levin on bass clarinet and bassist Shao Way Wu. The Waters of Non-Existence: Vishnu draws on three ancient Vedic stories of the Hindu god Vishnu — the Preserver, the Dreamer of Worlds, the God who enters human life in moments of cosmic need — and reimagines them within a contemporary New York City setting. The result is an evening of music and mythology that contemplates what it means for the divine to live among us: in the streets, in the subways, in the silences between notes. The concert is drawn from Haney's new album, The Waters of Non-Existence, released in June 2026 on Ravello Records / PARMA Recordings — a work that has earned national press attention and critical praise since its release."

Daily Bread

REALM PDX615 SE Alder St

Repping from Atlanta, Daily Bread (the sonic vision of producer Rhett Whatley) has spent the last decade carving out a sound that feels both timeless and forward-leaning. Rooted in jazz guitar, crate-digging, and early beat experiments from his bedroom studio, Daily Bread’s music has always thrived at the intersection of vintage soul, gritty hip-hop, and bass-forward production. Guided by an instinct to bring old sounds to new ears, his tracks unfold like lived-in stories: warm, textured, and unmistakably his own.

As Daily Bread moves into 2026, the focus remains on forward motion. Kicking off the year with new music on the horizon and confirmed festival appearances at Lightning in a Bottle, Bonnaroo, Electric Forest, and Elements, Daily Bread continues to push his sound into new territory while staying rooted in the soulful, sample-driven foundation that built his devoted following.

Valé Papi Fimbres

VALÉ is a fiercely talented vocalist and songwriter from Barranquilla, Colombia. Drawn to music at an early age, VALÉ began performing when she was just 6 years old in her school choir. By her early teens, she had found inspiration in American pop and R&B music, and began writing songs of her own. Influenced by some of her idols, VALÉ started to forge her own unique voice and point of view on the genre. She has spent time writing and recording in Los Angeles and Barranquilla, assembling a new collection of singles leading up to her 2024 debut EP, under the sun, and her latest singles, "estrella," "cold blooded," "lightspeed," and "rapido."

VALÉ's infectious melodies, catchy hooks, and standout vocals are bound to win fans from all over the world, establishing VALÉ as the leader in a new generation of Colombian pop artists. VALÉ has collaborated with artists such as Jesse Baez, Trinidad Cardona, and Angrybaby, and has toured with The Driver Era earlier in 2025. In the fall of 2025, she joined Between Friends on their North American WOW! TOUR!, and in the spring of 2026, she opened for Luna Luna on their For Siempre Tour.

Aside from Papi Fimbres playing in over a thousand bands in and around the city of Portland, Oregon, he also manages to find time to DJ when the opportunity arises. Whether it's '50s & '60s Cumbias from Colombia to Peru or '70s Afro Funk from West Africa, he's always bringing the POC vibes to the dance floors & causing a sweaty dance frenzy.

UFO! (SF) - Vision, Airlock, Psycobummer, Heavy Sounds

UFO!, also known as Ed Garro, is an undeniable pioneer in the stateside drum and bass scene. Coming up in the predominately Latin neighborhood in the Mission District of San Francisco California, he has been a dominating force since the 1990s, releasing numerous singles on labels in both the United States and abroad. garnering respect within the stateside scene for his eclectic sound. His creative journey extends beyond the confines of drum and bass, dabbling in and producing various genres over the years.

A move to New York in 2000 brought UFO! to new musical terrains. Not content to ride on his past rep in drum 'n bass, he began to delve into the nocturnal activities of the New York electro, new wave and dark wave scenes. During his time on the east coast, UFO! saw several of his productions featured in new media forums, including MTV and the hit TV series, CSI:NY.

UFO! continues to push ahead, carving out a niche on the outer fringes of the music scene in the most impressive way, with committed abandon, joyriding through the crumbling detritus of an industrialized society colonized by data and information—a place where the man is no longer easily distinct from the machine.
