First Friday Singles Mixer

Enjoy a relaxed singles mixer where color-coded wristbands and playful prompts on your name tag make conversations easy. Casual icebreakers and random challenges happen around the bar to spark connections. Throughout the evening, the Who am I name game keeps things lively... a name goes on your back, you ask yes or no questions to figure it out, and each correct guess earns a raffle entry, with drawings happening all night. The atmosphere is low pressure and open to everyone. Pick the wristband that matches your intentions... red if you are not looking, orange if you are there as a wingman, yellow if you are just vibing and meeting new friends. This is a recurring monthly event.

Singles Give Back: Special Olympics Oregon Swim Competition Volunteering

Let’s spend a Sunday doing some good and getting to know each other along the way! Join our 30s & 40s Singles Group to support athletes at Special Olympics Oregon’s Beaverton Regional Aquatics competition on Sunday, November 1.

Expect swimming, teamwork, plenty of cheering, and a chance to connect with other community-minded singles. The event coordinator is excited to have our group help!

We have two exciting ways to participate based on how involved you want to be.

🙌 Path 1: Come volunteer directly with us

No sports knowledge, athletic ability, or previous volunteer experience needed. The Special Olympics Oregon team will train you onsite and assign your role at check-in.

You might help with:

  • Athlete escorts: Guide swimmers from staging to their lanes and then to awards.
  • Timing: Time races and call the finish order.
  • Results: Deliver and record race results.
  • Awards: Prepare medals and ribbons and help with presentations.
  • Developmental skills: Help with staging, escorting, and timing for the morning skills competition.

Have relevant experience? Let the team know at check-in!

You can choose between a full-day shift of about 8–9 hours or a half-day shift of about 4–4.5 hours, depending on availability.

All volunteers receive a Special Olympics Oregon T-shirt, and full-day volunteers receive lunch.

📝 How to join as a volunteer

  1. RSVP here so we know you’re joining our Meetup group.
  2. Register directly with Special Olympics Oregon and choose your shift (link here or in comments). Your Meetup RSVP alone does not reserve a volunteer spot.
  3. Watch for a Meetup message from me! I’ll check in to confirm your shift, help with questions, and coordinate our group.

Please register promptly if you’d like to volunteer, since shifts have limited spaces. Follow the arrival and check-in instructions for your selected shift.

💛 A small commitment that makes a big difference

The event team relies on registered volunteers to keep the competition running smoothly. Please choose a shift you can commit to attending in full and plan ahead for the day.

Of course, unexpected things happen! If you can no longer volunteer, please notify the Special Olympics coordinator promptly, update your volunteer registration, and update your Meetup RSVP too. Keeping everyone informed as timely as possible gives the team time to adjust.

📣 Path 2: Prefer to cheer? Join the audience!

You can also support the athletes from the sidelines. If committing to volunteering in a shift isn’t the right fit, or the shifts have filled, come enjoy the competition and help us give the swimmers an enthusiastic audience!

Please let me know whether you’re volunteering or coming to cheer, so I can coordinate our group. Only people registered directly with Special Olympics Oregon will be counted as volunteers.

Which ever path you choose, we’re happy to have you!

Come lend a hand, bring your cheering voice, and spend a Sunday supporting our greater Portland community. 💛

Trivia Mondays at Paydirt

Gather your friends and join Untapped Trivia at Paydirt Bar every 1st and 3rd Monday for free bar trivia. Voted “Best Trivia Night” in PDX.

For over a decade, Paydirt has been a dedicated drinking establishment with a soft spot for whiskey, Fernet on draft, and serious cocktails (without being too serious about cocktails). We are nestled in the Zipper Building on 28th and Sandy, with four restaurant neighbors and plenty of seating both inside and on our spacious patio. Paydirt bar is from the same boozy bar folks who brought you The Old Gold, Tough Luck, Hi-Top Tavern, Holy Ghost, and The Last Rodeo.

No apps required. Untapped Trivia keeps it old school with pen and paper. Trivia is always free to play, with prizes for the top three teams. Enjoy a mix of general knowledge and rotating topics, along with delicious drinks, beer, tasty food, and more. Follow @untappedtrivia on your favorite social media channels for weekly themes and hints for trivia at Paydirt.

Untapped Trivia formed as the brainchild of a few close friends with a passion for craft beer, cocktails, great food, and cozy pub interiors. Gathering, commingling, and quizzically entertaining Portlanders and visitors from near and far since 2016. Voted “Best Trivia” in Portland, Oregon, in 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, and nominated “Best Trivia” in Portland, Oregon, in 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 in Willamette Week’s Best of Portland Readers Poll.

Don your best Pee-wee Herman-themed costume and join us on this one-of-kind, epic bar crawl. The group will hit about half a dozen bars, all featuring Pee-wee themed drink and food specials. In honor of Paul Reubens, Pee-wee Herman himself, a devoted animal lover, we're donating 75% of proceeds directly to PDX Cat Trapper, a grassroots Portland feral cat rescue and registered 503c charity. If you love the world of Pee-wee Herman and cats, then this is the event for you! Tickets are $20 and available at https://peeweepubcrawl.com/tickets. The secret meet-up location will be sent only to ticket holders. During the pub crawl, there will be multiple costume contests, a Pee-wee trivia competition, a scavenger hunt, a sound-alike contest, dance-offs, and more fun than you can shake a stick at! Stick around for the after-party featuring a special DJ spinning records. Prizes will be awarded for the various contests at this time. The Pee-wee Pub Crawl is the brainchild of Meredith Walter, a devoted Pee-wee fan! She’d long dreamt of doing a pub crawl in tribute to Paul Reubens, so she enlisted Portland's pub crawl expert, former BarFly Bus hostess with the mostess and planner-in-chief, Jen Lane. Together, they enlisted the help of their fellow Pee-wee afficionados, prolific publisher and dynamic graphic artist, Jared Prophet, the noted artist, deejay, and event creator, Matt Stanger, and The Photobooth Chick, herself, Jocelyn Dean. Speed Dating Tonight!

Speed Dating Tonight!
Music & Libretto by Michael Ching
Based on a concept by Dean Anthony

Portland State University’s Opera program kicks off its 50th anniversary season with Michael Ching’s “Speed Dating Tonight!” (2013). Set over the course of a single evening at a local bar, this clever, heartwarming opera follows a revolving cast of singles searching for that elusive spark. There's the dreamer, the hopeless romantic, the bashful, the over-sharer, the chronically distracted, and everyone in between, each getting their moment in the spotlight through music that is equal parts tender, heartbreaking, and hilarious.

Written with duets and ensembles for up to 45 voices, “Speed Dating Tonight!” has a flexible modular structure that can be customized to fit any cast size, voice type, or gender identity. PSU Opera’s version of “Speed Dating Tonight!” features 35 song selections and arrangements specifically chosen to reflect the unique assortment of voices in the 12-member cast.

At its heart, this is a show about the universal human longing to be seen and cherished by another person. Woven through the interactions is another question: can a genuine connection actually happen in five minutes or less? With Michael Ching’s delightful opera, the answer is decidedly yes.

Visit the Speed Dating Tonight! web page to learn more about this production, including additional dates, cast and crew information, photos, and more as we get closer to opening night.
