Red Mountain Loop

TBDMap

This is a nice late season hike with great views if we catch a crisp bluebird day. It's about 9 miles and 1700 ft elevation gain. It follows the PCT to Indian Racetrack before climbing up Red Mountain and back to the trailhead along a closed, gravel road. Oregon Hikers has a good description. The drive is about 1.5 hrs from the MMC.

This will be an exploratory hike as I've previously taken a different out and back route to Red Mountain. While I haven't hiked this exact trail, I do know that this time of year in the Indian Heaven Wilderness there can be swampy sections of the trail depending on if there has been melting snow or a good rain that fills the meadows. It's worth a little damp shoes though!

Run Club and Power Walking

All are welcome for this fun community run and walking group, held on the first Saturday of every month. This is a free community group, so anyone can join the runners or walkers at no cost. It's a great Milwaukie Running Club group. The sauna social after the run is offered at half price: just $14.50. Capacity is limited to the first 20 sign-ups, so you are encouraged to sign up in advance.

The light pace is great for beginners, and set by the group. If a few people want to go slower or faster, the group will split into different-paced pods. Simply show up just before 8 a.m., run or walk for about an hour, then enjoy sauna time together at half price afterward.

Soak up that steam and the cold contrast for muscle recovery, improved circulation and enhanced running performance. Meet rain or shine and always make sure everyone is feeling safe and supported. Keep up that momentum toward your 2026 goals with this guided route — run or walk.

Monday Swing — Practicum & Social Dance ft. How to Practice

Monday Swing is a weekly vintage swing dance practicum and social dance on Monday nights with DJ'ed music in a cozy NE PDX setting.

All ages! No partner needed!

7:00 - 8:00 Lesson — How to Practice w/ Dianne and Dan
8:00 - 10:00 Practicum & Social Dance

Lesson — $10
Dance — $10
BOTH — $15

Class Description:

In this class, we'll be sharing everything we know about practicing. We’ll cover what to practice, how to practice, and effective strategies for getting the most out of your time. We'll be sharing decades of our own personal learnings about how to be your own best teacher.

So here’s the nitty gritty… We’ll go over how to notate movement, how to seek out and break down canonical sources, how to borrow effectively from professional dancers / competition footage, and how to develop your own "voice" as a dancer. We'll discuss how to prioritize your practice in accordance with your dance values, and how to develop systems for yourself that lead to your dance goals and better dancing in general. We’ll touch on how to build choreography, how to communicate, how to open up space for creativity, and how to connect your practice to the roots and historical traditions of the dance while still being innovative and true to your own voice.

Whether you're practicing with a dedicated partner, by yourself, or with a group, this class will cover techniques to help you show up for yourself and others on your journey to meeting your dance goals.

Silver Falls Perimeter Loop

Silver Falls South TrailheadMap

Hike trails normally used mostly by mountain bikers and mounted horse riders on a fall Thursday when we should have it mostly to ourselves. Silver Falls is Oregon's largest state park, and you can view a large share of it on this hike. Because the hiking is so easy there, we will going a tick faster than usual; I've listed this as at least 2.5 mph.

The only waterfall we will see is North Falls, and then we will head onto the Perimeter Trail, a short segment of the Catamount Trail, the Buck Mountain Loop Trail, and finally the Rackett Ridge Trail to return to the Perimeter Trail and ultimately North Falls, for a clockwise lollipop loop that will total 17.2 miles, with 2,475' of gain and loss. The prior time I led this awesome hike most of the photos were of mushrooms.

We are leaving the Tualatin Park & Ride at Bridgeport at 06:30. Expect to spend about seven hours on the trails. Every vehicle parked at North Falls will need to pay $10 or display an Oregon State Park day use pass.

  • Boots (Please wear something sturdy that will protect your toes from sharp tools. Tennis shoes are not recommended. Open-toed shoes will not be allowed.)
  • Long sleeved shirts and pants
  • Rain gear, insulating layers, sun protection, etc. as appropriate for the weather

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: TKO recognizes that the trails we work on travel through the traditional lands of many Indigenous tribes and communities. We are the most recent in a long line of stewards to this land, and it is our responsibility to do so with humility and respect. We are grateful to these tribes and their descendants for being the original and continuing stewards of these spaces, and encourage everyone to go beyond a land acknowledgment by supporting Indigenous communities and organizations in your area.

ACCOMMODATION REQUESTS: TKO seeks to make our events inclusive of people of all backgrounds and abilities. If you would like to discuss potential accommodations to allow for your participation in this event, please click here to complete a short Google survey. TKO staff will then contact you to discuss options. Please note: available accommodations will vary by event and typically need to be requested a minimum of two weeks in advance. If you have any questions, reach out to us by clicking Contact near the bottom of this page.

EQUITY & INCLUSION: TKO seeks to make Oregon’s trails a place where people can go to connect with nature & one another. Not everyone feels safe or welcome in the outdoors due to issues like racism, bias, and hate. We commit to being part of the solution to this problem and to enact change. Conduct, speech, or expressions that target any individual or group will not be tolerated by TKO.

PERSONAL SAFETY: Your physical and emotional safety is our number one priority. If a person’s actions or comments make you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, you may: interrupt directly, tell a crew leader, and/or inform TKO staff via the post-event survey.

While TKO no longer requires masking/vaccination for our events, we do support those who choose to mask for their own safety. We ask participants to respect the health of folks who wear masks by distancing or wearing a mask while in close proximity.

Kings Mountain Junior Loop Hike

Kings MountainMap

Fun variation on standard Kings Mountain hike. Instead of heading straight up Kings Mountain trail, we'll make a left onto Wilson River trail. We'll then head up to a somewhat overgrown Kings Junior trail which then goes up and then down before connecting back up to Kings Mountain trail. We'll take this to the Kings Mountain summit and then take the standard Kings Mountain trail back down to the trailhead.

Ski Walking! Forest Park Hike Saltzman Rd. Trail

Join us for a morning of hiking and casual Ski Walking! All are welcome - including experienced or budding ski enthusiasts, no prior experience is required! Bring hiking or ski poles. The leader will have an extra loaner set of poles. We will begin with a hike descending Fiirelane 5, then practice ski walking with poles on the Lief Erikson trail before heading gradually uphill on the Saltzman Rd. trail using our poles for "ski walking". After our first loop we will debrief and determine what additional trail loops we wish to make. Participants are encouraged to wear their favorite ski/snow hat, and we will celebrate the most creative snow dancer among the group. What is Ski Walking? This is great pre-season hype for nordic skiing or skimo skinning. Meet 8:30am at Saltzman Trailhead.

Black Hole Falls

TBDMap

Black Hole Falls is a seldom-visited 50-foot waterfall tucked in a canyon on North Siouxon Creek.

The out-and-back trail covers about 10 miles with 2000 feet of elevation gain. The first couple miles are quite overgrown, in some places with thorny bushes. Depending on the recent rainfall, there may be brook crossings with the potential for getting wet feet. Two larger crossings require walking or scooting across a log which may make some hikers uneasy. Once past the overgrown portion and crossings, the trail is a nice walk in the woods to the stunning falls.

The final 6 miles of the drive are on gravel roads with a couple easy-to-miss turns and a short section steep enough that standard vehicles may have difficulty maintaining traction. A Washington Discover Pass is needed for parking.

We'll carpool from the MMC departing at 7 am for the approximately 90-minute drive and aim to be back by 4 pm.

Dog Mountain Loop

Every time I've ever led the Dog Mountain Loop, we've gone up the nearest trail to the Columbia River and descended the Augspurger Trail, but when we reached the first spectacular viewpoint, we always went left to a zone that's often incredibly windy. I recently learned of an alternative to the windy zone popularly known as the Puppy Trail, but which on my map is labeled Dog Mountain Summit Trail, and I aim to take this route to the summit. That 0.6 mile trail will be exploratory for your leader, but I have good intelligence that the trail is in fine shape. As with the other times I've hiked this loop, we'll hike 6.9 miles, ascending 2,750'.

We can leave a little later than in the spring because the parking lot is not expected to fill as rapidly in mid November. But these trails are always popular and we won't be hiking alone. No permits are necessary outside spring weekends, but vehicles will need to display a NW Forest Pass or other federal pass. Our listed speed of 1.5 to 1.9 mph reflects my experience with groups on these steep trails.

Expect exposure to the weather throughout the hike. The hike has a very gradual incline, but for the most part is flat. The cliffs, river and canyon are quite striking throughout. Singles Give Back: Special Olympics Oregon Swim Competition Volunteering

Let’s spend a Sunday doing some good and getting to know each other along the way! Join our 30s & 40s Singles Group to support athletes at Special Olympics Oregon’s Beaverton Regional Aquatics competition on Sunday, November 1.

Expect swimming, teamwork, plenty of cheering, and a chance to connect with other community-minded singles. The event coordinator is excited to have our group help!

We have two exciting ways to participate based on how involved you want to be.

🙌 Path 1: Come volunteer directly with us

No sports knowledge, athletic ability, or previous volunteer experience needed. The Special Olympics Oregon team will train you onsite and assign your role at check-in.

You might help with:

  • Athlete escorts: Guide swimmers from staging to their lanes and then to awards.
  • Timing: Time races and call the finish order.
  • Results: Deliver and record race results.
  • Awards: Prepare medals and ribbons and help with presentations.
  • Developmental skills: Help with staging, escorting, and timing for the morning skills competition.

Have relevant experience? Let the team know at check-in!

You can choose between a full-day shift of about 8–9 hours or a half-day shift of about 4–4.5 hours, depending on availability.

All volunteers receive a Special Olympics Oregon T-shirt, and full-day volunteers receive lunch.

📝 How to join as a volunteer

  1. RSVP here so we know you’re joining our Meetup group.
  2. Register directly with Special Olympics Oregon and choose your shift (link here or in comments). Your Meetup RSVP alone does not reserve a volunteer spot.
  3. Watch for a Meetup message from me! I’ll check in to confirm your shift, help with questions, and coordinate our group.

Please register promptly if you’d like to volunteer, since shifts have limited spaces. Follow the arrival and check-in instructions for your selected shift.

💛 A small commitment that makes a big difference

The event team relies on registered volunteers to keep the competition running smoothly. Please choose a shift you can commit to attending in full and plan ahead for the day.

Of course, unexpected things happen! If you can no longer volunteer, please notify the Special Olympics coordinator promptly, update your volunteer registration, and update your Meetup RSVP too. Keeping everyone informed as timely as possible gives the team time to adjust.

📣 Path 2: Prefer to cheer? Join the audience!

You can also support the athletes from the sidelines. If committing to volunteering in a shift isn’t the right fit, or the shifts have filled, come enjoy the competition and help us give the swimmers an enthusiastic audience!

Please let me know whether you’re volunteering or coming to cheer, so I can coordinate our group. Only people registered directly with Special Olympics Oregon will be counted as volunteers.

Which ever path you choose, we’re happy to have you!

Come lend a hand, bring your cheering voice, and spend a Sunday supporting our greater Portland community. 💛

This is a one-way walk, mostly on the paved Trolley Trail, from the pedestrian-bicycle bridge over the Clackamas River to the SE Park Ave MAX station. We will walk 7.0 miles and gain 175'.

The trip will start and end at the SE Park Ave MAX station, which is the southern terminus of the Orange line but is also served by bus 33. Folks may park in the garage or take transit there. We're gathering just before 08:00 in advance of our 08:04 to 08:20 SB bus 33. Please bring your HOP card, a contactless credit card, or $2.80 cash (exact change) to ride the bus. We will deboard at stop 3831, McLoughlin & Clackamette Dr, which is the first stop south of the Clackamas River.

Our walk starts from there. We will walk alongside Dunes Dr, Clackamette Dr, and Main St to the trail along the Clackamas River, which we will take to the ped-bike bridge. Mushroom Identification Hike

Leif Erikson Germantown Trail HeadNW Leif Erikson Dr

Join the final class in the mushroom education series that began in June. This Mushroom Identification class is designed to help you build confidence in recognizing common fungi in their natural habitat while deepening your understanding of mushroom characteristics, seasonal patterns, and safe foraging practices.

Because collecting plants or fungi is not permitted in Forest Park, this class focuses on education and observation—learning how to identify mushrooms in a wild setting without harvesting. You’ll gain practical skills and tips you can apply when exploring and foraging outside of Forest Park on your own.

Come ready to learn, observe, and enjoy the fascinating world of fungi.

We will meet at Germantown and Leif Erikson Trailhead.

Benson Plateau via Herman Creek

A traditional (for me) post-Thanksgiving hike up the PCT to Benson Plateau after coming over from the Herman Creek trailhead. From one year to the next it can be a different experience. It's a long uphill pull until you reach the only open view. Some years that's as far as we got. From there it is still a mile and a half to the entryway to the plateau. I have no problem turning around if the conditions are too taxing or if the group gets too strung out.
