A Queer Guide to Saving American Democracy
Join a special evening with trailblazing drag artist, activist, and political candidate Marti Cummings and Portland-based constitutional law professor and author Robin Maril. Before the film, Marti and Robin will sit down for a live conversation about queer representation, civic engagement, and the power of showing up for your community. The conversation will be moderated by Kyndall Mason of Basic Rights Oregon.
Following the conversation, stick around for Queen of New York, the acclaimed documentary following Marti Cummingsā groundbreaking 2020 campaign to become one of the first openly nonbinary members of the New York City Council. This evening also celebrates the launch of Robin Marilās new book, A Queer Guide to Saving American Democracy. Copies will be available for purchase on site.
ON SCREEN: Queen of New York
2023. Directed by Emma Fidel. Runtime: 1 hour 20 minutes.
Welcome to a different kind of drag race. As NYC emerges from the chaos of 2020, Marti Cummings (they/them), an audacious and big-hearted drag queen, goes all out in a historic bid to become a City Councilperson. Itās one of the most hotly contested Council races in years, and Martiās strongest competitor is Shaun Abreu, a tenantsā lawyer with deep roots in the districtās Latinx community. As these first-timers race to do the most good for their Upper Manhattan neighbors, they offer very different visions for Democratic politics ā one in a suit and tie, the other in combat boots and floral print. As this immersive documentary reveals, Martiās passion inspires queer activists and allies to change the political system. Their campaign becomes a community of its own, especially for Martiās non-binary peers who have never before seen themselves represented.
Sixtieth Anniversary of Jacksonville National Historic District
In 1966, Jacksonville made history by becoming the first city in Oregon to be designated a National Historic Landmark District, recognized as a remarkably preserved late 1800s Gold Rush boom town. This milestone event reflects on six decades of community effort, preservation, and local pride that kept Jacksonvilleās rich heritage alive for generations.
Tickets for this event are available at jacksonvillecommunitycenter.org.
Join Jacksonville Community Center to observe this anniversary with Larry Smith, a beloved local historian, author, and retired fifth-grade teacher who taught at Jacksonville Elementary School for thirty-three years before retiring in 2000. Known as the unofficial historian of Jacksonville, Larry is a founding member and executive director of the Jacksonville Woodlands Association, an avid photographer with an archive of over twenty thousand local historic photos, and a former interpretive park ranger at Crater Lake National Park. His lifelong dedication to education and preservation has played a key role in protecting both Jacksonvilleās history and its natural trail network.
This event is supported by a Public Programs Grant from Oregon Humanities.
