Celebrating 50 Years of Buzzcocks

In a darkening musical landscape where viral fads and AI-generated fakery share chart-space with the self-absorbed products of the nation’s stage schools, Buzzcocks shine out as a gleaming beacon of hope.
A constant, ever-evolving presence over the last 45 years of pop culture, the band’s legendary status will be set in stone β€” literally β€” with their inclusion in the Music Walk Of Fame in September, joining an illustrious roll call including David Bowie, The Who, Madness and Amy Winehouse.
The band’s never-better live shows, meanwhile, are electrifying reminders of rock music’s power to inspire, educate and inform. All delivered with an energy and conviction of a band half their age.
β€œIt’s my lifeblood,” says Steve Diggle β€” 68 years young β€” of a non-stop touring schedule which over the summer will see them play to thousands of fans across Europe and the UK.
β€œI’ve still got the fire in my belly. Some musicians get bored of being on the road, but I’m institutionalised. I’ve done 50-odd years of staying in hotels. It’s what I signed up for. Ever since I saw Bob Dylan in the back of a black taxi in (D.A. Pennebaker’s 1967 documentary) Don’t Look Back, I always wanted to live this kind of life β€” being interviewed in the back of a black taxi on the way to the studio.”

While most of their punk peers are content to traverse the globe in jukebox-style revue shows, Buzzcocks continue to move with the times, attracting new fans wherever they go. A case in point being the huge all-ages crowd the band pulled at the Iggy Pop-headlined Dog Day Afternoon in July.
β€œThere’s not a lot of intellectual or emotional thinking in music these days,” observes Steve. β€œPeople are being controlled. They’ll watch a video of someone falling over a banana skin and think they’re being entertained. They don’t realise the beauty of words, and the power of music. I’d like to think young kids who come to see us feel the same excitement I got from Little Richard and Chuck Berry. It goes back to the punk thing. It was about attitude and a way of thinking. We had the questions, but we didn’t have the answers. But the questions are the important thing.”

Gully Boys

The Gully Boys origin story begins in the aisles of a Minneapolis thrift shop. Vocalist/guitarist Kathy Callahan (she/her) and co-worker Nadirah McGill (they/them) spent their days sharing dreams and building a friendship amongst racks of forgotten treasures. When Kathy confided her desire to sing in a band, it set off a groundswell of events: Nadi grabbed a pair of drumsticks, and the two invited middle school friend Natalie Klemond (she/her) to join on bass. From there, a cover of Best Coast's "Girlfriend" marked the start of a journey fueled by undeniable chemistry, channeling the raw energy of legends like No Doubt, Garbage, and Hole into a sound that's galvanizingly Gully.

Two years of relentless gigging followed, and earned Gully Boys the Best New Band crown by their local Minneapolis City Pages in 2018, shortly after the release of their debut demo collection, Not So Brave. Their anticipated follow-up EP, Phony, arrived in late 2019, just months before the live music world came to a halt. Inspired by this break in the action, the band added lead guitarist Mariah Mercedes (they/them), and worked with producer Zach Zurn at Carpet Booth Studio to release their Favorite Son EP (2021) and standout singles "See You See" (2022) and "Optimist" (2023).

Grounded in a bond as fierce as their sound, Gully Boys' electrifying live performances have earned them spots on SXSW stages, Audiotree sessions, and tours alongside Nova Twins, Motion City Soundtrack, Destroy Boys, Bad Bad Hats, and more. From the iconic stage at Minneapolis' First Avenue to national gigs that defy expectations, Gully Boys capture an ethos of equal parts anger and tenderness-fueling a journey that feels like it's just getting started.

Pollyanna

Pollyanna are a three-piece New Jersey band - Jill Beckett (vocals/guitar), Daniel McCool (drums), and Brandon Bolton (bass) - blending elements of loud rock, pop and punk into an emotional roller coaster of fury and catharsis. Born from the DIY touring scene, Pollyanna have become a force in the tri-state music scene, fusing pissed-off, "burn the world down" energy with moments of queer joy, trans pride, and raw vulnerability.

Following their I Surrender Records debut "Slime", the band are keeping momentum high with their razor-sharp new single "Gravedigger," recorded with Brett Romnes (Hot Mulligan, Mom Jeans, The Front Bottoms). With their new sophomore album, "Weirdo", Pollyanna are taking bold new steps, articulating the journey of trading hatred for joy, and they're just getting started.

Chipped Nail Polish with Mckenna Esteb and Frecks

Chipped Nail Polish - Jill started Chipped Nail Polish with just her electric ukulele and a bad manicure. The project came to life in the basements and living rooms of the lively house show scene at the University of Oregon. The friendships formed there traveled up North to Portland where the band now resides.

Inspired by bands like Beach Bunny, Snail Mail, Soccer Mommy, FIDLAR, and Surf Curse, CNP is heavily influenced by the moshy surf punk music of Jill’s teen years, as well as introspective bedroom pop that has captivated her twenties. The result kinda feels like crying in a mosh pit, which is always encouraged at shows.

Mckenna Esteb - Boise, ID based songwriter.

Frecks - β€œFrecks” is comprised of one twenty-something member named Jayden from Portland, Oregon. Jayden has been writing music since her early teen years and draws inspiration from all aspects of her life. Pulling from concepts of introspection and undying love, she aims to tug on heartstrings with dreamy guitar riffs and haunting melodies.

Sound Bath Experience on the Farm

ChamBurn Farm LLC20925 S Nursery Ln

As autumn settles more deeply into the land, join a cozy evening at ChamBurn Farm in Oregon City, just 20 minutes south of Portland. Begin with a short tour of the beautifully designed farm, then warm up with hot cider and a seasonal snack provided by chef Jim of ChamBurn Farm.

Under a large covered outdoor patio complete with a fire burning in the fireplace, Angela of Breathe Yoga will open the evening's practice with a grounding, inviting you to settle into your body, connect with the earth beneath you, and arrive fully in the moment. Then, Gabrielle of Hearthsounds Sound Healing will guide you into a 75-minute immersive sound bath. Singing bowls, gong, chimes, and other instruments will surround you in layers of sound and vibration, blending with the natural sounds of the farm: the crackle of the fire, the rustling of the evening air, and the occasional call of an animal.

November invites one to slow down. The harvest has been gathered, the landscape is changing, and nature is gradually becoming quieter. This evening is an opportunity to follow that rhythm, settle into stillness, and simply receive.

It’s through the songs of Senses Failthat Nielsen has forever made sense of and peace with life’s highs and lows; a journey that began in the leafy suburbs of Ridgewood, New Jersey with the iconic Gold-selling debut album Let It Enfold You, and which has since seen Senses Fail become one of rock music’s most cherished, celebrated names.

Spanish Love Songs – The Cost of Living Tour

Over the last decade, SPANISH LOVE SONGS have watched a fiercely loyal community take
shape one cramped club show and one new listener at a time. That momentum has carried the
band to tours with The Wonder Years, Alkaline Trio and Hot Mulligan, along with appearances
at Furnace Fest, 2000trees and the revived Vans Warped Tour, following the release of instant
classics Schmaltz (2018), Brave Faces Everyone (2020) and No Joy (2023). This intimate,
powerful connection with their audience is proof that even in an era defined by isolation, people
are still out there yearning for others to stand beside them in the darkness.

That search continues on FUTURE NAUSEA, the Pure Noise quintet’s fourth LP. Drawing from
the widescreen ambition of heartland rock – the anthemic sweep of records like Born in the
U.S.A., Sam’s Town and Full Moon Fever – shimmering synths, ringing guitars and soaring
choruses define an expansive sound crafted across sessions with producers Chris Walla (Death
Cab for Cutie) and Sarah Tudzin (Illuminati Hotties). Against that backdrop, Dylan Slocum’s
characteristically observational lyricism remains the band’s beating heart: deeply empathetic
and unflinchingly honest as he chronicles political violence, climate anxiety, late-stage
capitalism and the quiet ways these existential crises seep into everyday life – and, just as
critically, how moments of love, companionship and shared resilience become the antidote to an
increasingly uncertain future.

One Nation

Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education724 Northwest Davis Street

One Nation brings together contemporary artists who explore the ideals and contradictions embedded in the American promise. Drawing on the national motto E Pluribus Unum β€” β€œOut of Many, One” β€” the exhibition reflects on how a diverse society strives toward unity while confronting social, political, and cultural divisions.

Across painting, photography, sculpture, textile, and mixed media, the artists consider themes central to American civic life: immigration and belonging, protest and dissent, labor and economic justice, religious freedom, racial inequality, and the enduring power of democratic ideals.

Personal histories and collective memory intersect throughout the exhibition. Portraits of leaders and everyday citizens appear alongside symbolic images of journeys, borders, and shared responsibility. Together, these works ask viewers to consider not only what unites Americans, but also what challenges the nation’s commitment to liberty and justice, and invites reflection on the role individuals and communities play in shaping the country’s future.

Cigar Mercy Music Pretty Deadly Old Cross

There was a time when punk rock was dismissed as a fleeting fad, lumped in with disco and TV bands. But acts like The Ramones, The Clash, and later Green Day proved otherwise, cementing punk as a powerful voice of youth. Today, Mercy Music carries that torch. Led by guitarist and vocalist Brendan Scholz, the Las Vegas trio Ò€" rounded out by bassist Jarred Cooper and drummer Ryan Seaman Ò€" channels the spirit of punk's early days with raw emotion and finely crafted songs that resonate beyond fast guitars and angst.

For Scholz, punk was never about image - it was survival. He picked up a guitar at nine years old and found an outlet for the intensity of life's highs and lows. Mercy Music's latest album, What You Stand To Lose, produced by Descendents drummer Bill Stevenson, distills Scholz's knack for crafting melodic anthems wrapped in emotional honesty. With Cooper and Seaman's tight musicianship backing him, Scholz creates music that feels urgent and profoundly human, songs that cut through the noise of an increasingly cynical industry.

The heart of Mercy Music lies in the genuine connection they seek with listeners who feel like outsiders. "We've never really fit into one box," Scholz explains. Their music offers a lifeline for anyone needing a reminder that they aren't alone. Whether it's the desperate hope of "Believe In We" or the aching sorrow of "Waiting To Begin," Mercy Music's songs are unflinchingly real Ò€" never sanitized, always sincere.

Scholz has never let go of the drive to create despite setbacks and personal hardships. His partnership with Cooper, dating back nearly 25 years, anchors the band's foundation. Their friendship - part brotherhood, part marriage - has endured the darkest moments, allowing their music to be built on trust, openness, and resilience. Cooper says, "Brendan goes to dark places, and I'm there to help him find the light."

Mercy Music will spend most of 2024 on the road, delivering cathartic, no-frills rock shows that remind you what punk means: connection, catharsis, and survival through sound. Scholz says it best: "We're not reinventing the wheel. But I don't think a band is doing exactly what we do. And honestly? That's enough for me."

Pretty Deadly is a Dallas, Oregon-based punk rock trio born from what was supposed to be a one-off studio jam-but turned into something too fun to walk away from. Formed in early 2025, the band features Blaine (guitar/vocals), Travis (bass/vocals), and Zach (drums)-three longtime players with deep roots in the Pacific Northwest punk scene. Between them, they've logged time in bands like Drawback, Ninjas with Syringes, The Disliked, Faithless Saints, Burn the Stage, Lost City, and The Civies.

Pretty Deadly isn't here to reinvent the wheel. They're here to keep it loud, fast, and honest. Drawing from the golden age of '90s and early 2000s punk-from SoCal skate punk to the grittier corners of Northwest alt-rock-their sound blends melody and grit, simplicity and sneer. There are no rules, just whatever hits in the moment. Sometimes that means channeling sad or pissed-off lyrics through a pop melody played at breakneck speed. Sometimes it leans darker and heavier. But it always stays true to the core: no stress, no filler, just three friends making noise they love.

Less is more. No bullshit. That's Pretty Deadly.

Punk Rock

Rose City melodic punk band Old Cross pulls influences from the late 90's punk and emo scenes and delivers heartfelt anthemic choruses across basement shows, dive bars and national stages alike.
The band released their LP Dead End Lullabies October 2024 and just dropped their new EP Acoustic Volume 1 Friday, January 9th.

WHITMER THOMAS

A Los Angeles-based comedian, avid skateboarder, filmmaker, and actor, Whitmer Thomas added rocker to his credentials in 2020 with the release of the soundtrack to his HBO musical/comedy one-man show, The Golden One. It was followed by a stand-alone music EP, the Jay Som-produced Can't Believe You're Happy Here, in 2022.

A native of Gulf Shores, Alabama, Thomas first found success in 2014 with Stone Quackers, a surreal FX adult animated television series. Power Violence, a popular monthly show Whitmer hosted with friends, helped to secure his status in the upper echelons of the Los Angeles independent comedy scene, as did his numerous short films like Blue Line and Fast and Loose, and appearances on The Walking Dead and Glow. In 2020, Whitmer released his one-man show, The Golden One, on HBO. Featuring pop-punk songs composed and performed by Whitmer (a longtime fan of blink-182), which covered everything from millennial anxiety and sex to abandonment and addiction, the special spawned the companion LP Songs from the Golden One. Between guest spots on series like I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson and Search Party, he followed it up with a music EP titled Can't Believe You're Happy Here in 2022, also on the Hardly Art label. Led by the sincere acoustic track "Don't Have a Cow," the EP was produced by Melina Duterte, better known as Jay Som.co

Roger Clyne and The Peacemakers

Mississippi Studios & Bar Bar3939 North Mississippi Avenue

β€œHere’s to life” Fans around the world can be found singing the chorus of the Roger Clyne-penned fan favorite β€œMekong” and toasting their glasses in unison to celebrate life through rock-n-roll. But the inspiration for the song dates back to the time Roger went to Taipei, Taiwan, as a college student to teach English during the day and busk with his guitar at night for money.

Today, as Clyne prepares to release his 11th studio album, he continues to transform his life experiences, inspirations, observations and his own muses into timeless music. And whether he’s wearing his Converse high tops, boots or sandals, Clyne’s blend of punk rock, americana, indie-pop and mariachi influences have made him, drummer PH Naffah, guitarist Jim Dalton and bassist Nick Scropos β€” collectively known as Roger Clyne and The Peacemakers.
