Singles Give Back: Special Olympics Oregon Swim Competition Volunteering

Letโ€™s spend a Sunday doing some good and getting to know each other along the way! Join our 30s & 40s Singles Group to support athletes at Special Olympics Oregonโ€™s Beaverton Regional Aquatics competition on Sunday, November 1.

Expect swimming, teamwork, plenty of cheering, and a chance to connect with other community-minded singles. The event coordinator is excited to have our group help!

We have two exciting ways to participate based on how involved you want to be.

๐Ÿ™Œ Path 1: Come volunteer directly with us

No sports knowledge, athletic ability, or previous volunteer experience needed. The Special Olympics Oregon team will train you onsite and assign your role at check-in.

You might help with:

  • Athlete escorts: Guide swimmers from staging to their lanes and then to awards.
  • Timing: Time races and call the finish order.
  • Results: Deliver and record race results.
  • Awards: Prepare medals and ribbons and help with presentations.
  • Developmental skills: Help with staging, escorting, and timing for the morning skills competition.

Have relevant experience? Let the team know at check-in!

You can choose between a full-day shift of about 8โ€“9 hours or a half-day shift of about 4โ€“4.5 hours, depending on availability.

All volunteers receive a Special Olympics Oregon T-shirt, and full-day volunteers receive lunch.

๐Ÿ“ How to join as a volunteer

  1. RSVP here so we know youโ€™re joining our Meetup group.
  2. Register directly with Special Olympics Oregon and choose your shift (link here or in comments). Your Meetup RSVP alone does not reserve a volunteer spot.
  3. Watch for a Meetup message from me! Iโ€™ll check in to confirm your shift, help with questions, and coordinate our group.

Please register promptly if youโ€™d like to volunteer, since shifts have limited spaces. Follow the arrival and check-in instructions for your selected shift.

๐Ÿ’› A small commitment that makes a big difference

The event team relies on registered volunteers to keep the competition running smoothly. Please choose a shift you can commit to attending in full and plan ahead for the day.

Of course, unexpected things happen! If you can no longer volunteer, please notify the Special Olympics coordinator promptly, update your volunteer registration, and update your Meetup RSVP too. Keeping everyone informed as timely as possible gives the team time to adjust.

๐Ÿ“ฃ Path 2: Prefer to cheer? Join the audience!

You can also support the athletes from the sidelines. If committing to volunteering in a shift isnโ€™t the right fit, or the shifts have filled, come enjoy the competition and help us give the swimmers an enthusiastic audience!

Please let me know whether youโ€™re volunteering or coming to cheer, so I can coordinate our group. Only people registered directly with Special Olympics Oregon will be counted as volunteers.

Which ever path you choose, weโ€™re happy to have you!

Come lend a hand, bring your cheering voice, and spend a Sunday supporting our greater Portland community. ๐Ÿ’›

Conversational Lube

McMenamins Al's Den303 Southwest 12th Avenue

91.5% of first dates suck purely because of awkward, dull, boring conversations. Conversational Lube is here to FIX that.

Youโ€™re invited to the first real-time, live comedy dating show. Singles will be matched, meet for the first time, then join a comedian on stage (the lube) to have a first date. Yes, audience members will be put on blind dates in real time at the show. That means you, yes, you can come and possibly find your soul mate. (Or at the very least go home with a funny af story.)

Each couple will have a date on the stage and be joined by a licensed professional* (*fully unlicensed comedian) to lube up the conversation, make sure it flows, stays entertaining, and fully capitalize on any weird shit that comes up. (The last part mostly for the sake of the audience and laughs.)

Hosted by stand-up comedian and writer, Cait Chock, who is single for many reasons but not because she canโ€™t dazzle a first conversation. She shines in a first impression, then actively decays like a free radical. Sheโ€™s a lost cause, but sheโ€™s using her conversational skills to help you find love.

No guarantee that you'll find love, but it's guaranteed it will be a helluva lot more fun than another boring and slightly deranged Tinder meet-up. ALL are welcome, even you monsters already happily in love, can come, eat, drink, laugh, and watch everyone else squirm. Apps suck. Approaching strangers in the wild is scary. Hitting on your Trader Joeโ€™s cashier is not cool. A comedy show is your best bet.

Donโ€™t settle for shitty, boring, vanilla conversationsโ€ฆapply conversational lube.

Speed Dating Tonight!

Speed Dating Tonight!
Music & Libretto by Michael Ching
Based on a concept by Dean Anthony

Portland State Universityโ€™s Opera program kicks off its 50th anniversary season with Michael Chingโ€™s โ€œSpeed Dating Tonight!โ€ (2013). Set over the course of a single evening at a local bar, this clever, heartwarming opera follows a revolving cast of singles searching for that elusive spark. There's the dreamer, the hopeless romantic, the bashful, the over-sharer, the chronically distracted, and everyone in between, each getting their moment in the spotlight through music that is equal parts tender, heartbreaking, and hilarious.

Written with duets and ensembles for up to 45 voices, โ€œSpeed Dating Tonight!โ€ has a flexible modular structure that can be customized to fit any cast size, voice type, or gender identity. PSU Operaโ€™s version of โ€œSpeed Dating Tonight!โ€ features 35 song selections and arrangements specifically chosen to reflect the unique assortment of voices in the 12-member cast.

At its heart, this is a show about the universal human longing to be seen and cherished by another person. Woven through the interactions is another question: can a genuine connection actually happen in five minutes or less? With Michael Chingโ€™s delightful opera, the answer is decidedly yes.

Visit the Speed Dating Tonight! web page to learn more about this production, including additional dates, cast and crew information, photos, and more as we get closer to opening night.

Exhibitor: Acre Knife

We are excited to host Acre Knife, a small team of bladesmiths crafting kitchen and outdoor knives in the St. Johns neighborhood!

They will demonstrate their new line of everyday hand-finished culinary knives and let shoppers try them for themselves.

About Acre

For years, a group of accomplished bladesmiths had devoted themselves to making exceptional knives. They had apprenticed, studied traditional techniques, experimented with materials, and developed their own methods. But they also knew how difficult it could be to build a life around that kind of work.

In 2023, Dane Tomseth set out to change that by creating a place where skilled makers could do serious work, earn a living, and keep getting better. That place became Acre Forge, a working production facility in North Portlandโ€™s St. Johns neighborhood where experienced makers share equipment, techniques, ideas, and a daily practice.

Their collective experience spans traditional Japanese techniques, modern design, metallurgy, ergonomics, culinary experience, woodworking, and machining. That shared foundation and the different paths that brought them to it is what shapes Acreโ€™s knife lines: Macrum and Signature.

Sapphic Singles

JuneMap

Hosted at June in Beaverton, this gathering welcomes queer women, sapphic people, and trans and nonbinary individuals in an affirming space. Expect relaxed conversation alongside playful activities designed to make introductions comfortable and fun. It is not a speed dating format. Participants rotate through small groups of three to six and take part in Q&A prompts, trivia, simple crafts, puzzles, and similar icebreakers. The goal is to encourage connections that can lead to friendships or relationships while strengthening community bonds. Event photography will occur, and attendance indicates consent to be photographed and to the use of images for future promotional purposes.
