The Lost Table

El Zócalo537 SE Stark Street

The Portland Grief House invites you to join The Lost Table, a welcoming space to gather in community, remember those we’ve lost, and share in the traditions that help us keep them close. Bring a dish, pull up a chair, and make a place at the table for the dead. Grief can be hard to understand, and sometimes what we need most is community, ritual, conversation, and food.

Together, we’ll explore how different cultures and traditions call to, honor, and make offerings to those who have died. In the spirit of Día de Muertos, we’ll create a shared space where the living and the dead can gather around the same table.

We’ll begin with a creative activity led by Mario Mesquita, inviting us to reflect on memory, food, and our relationships with those we’ve lost. Participants will be introduced to the ritual elements that will carry us through the evening.

Laura Green will lead a community conversation about intercultural traditions of Día de Muertos and other ways communities call to and remember their dead. Participants will have an opportunity to share stories, traditions, and memories, and to dedicate an offering to someone they have lost.

Bea Yeh will introduce the tradition of Hungry Ghost and lead us in making an offering to the dead. We’ll set places at our table for those who are no longer with us and share food as an act of remembrance and connection.

Our community offerings and tributes will be gathered at Ximena Morales’s altar, creating a shared space of remembrance that connects the different traditions and offerings brought into the room.

Throughout the evening, we’ll create something together through words, offerings, and remembrance. We’ll dedicate a community poem to the dead and close our gathering with a collective ritual of words, sound, and stillness.

Please bring:

  • A dish to share, plus any serving utensils it needs. Consider bringing something that reminds you of a loved one or connects you to a family or cultural tradition.
  • Please label your food with a card identifying any allergens or dietary considerations.
  • Your own dinnerware (plate, bowl, utensils, napkin).
  • A beverage for yourself, if you’d like something other than water.
  • A photograph, name, or other small tribute to a loved one for the community altar, if you’d like.
  • Please do not bring chips, salsa, or guacamole—Milagro will provide these.

The Portland Grief House is honored to continue this tradition, originally started by Side Yard Farm. El Centro Milagro is excited to partner with Portland Grief House to create a space for English- and Spanish-speaking community members to gather, remember, share traditions, and honor the dead together.

MRC BOOK CLUB WITH AUTHOR VISIT: JAMES SPOONER

Author of It Starts With Anger James Spooner will be visiting campus on Nov 9th as our special author visit for Fall's MRC Book Club gathering. Spooner will be giving a talk on the intersections of punk, race and creative art practice, with time for Q&A.

Reed Librarians picked this coming-of-age graphic memoir that explores race, identity, and rebellion because of how Spooner traces how their reactionary anger evolved into a creative force. Confronted with systemic racism, microaggressions, and Nazi extremism within punk spaces, Spooner follows the founding of the Afro-Punk movement all the way to their leaving of the space due to all the ways it fell short as a scene that was ironically both liberating and alienating for the Black people drawn to it.

Their zine-inspired work includes photos, illustrations, and cartoon panels with traditional narrative in a unique package that examines the tension between the conflation of underground culture and mainstream success.

All are welcome to this event. Open to the community. Free for all.

----

We encourage Reed students, staff and faculty to sign up for the MRC Book Club to score a copy of Spooner's autobio. Sign up for your free copy here.

The Lost Table: A Community Gathering for Grief and Remembrance

Milagro – Miracle Theatre Group525 Southeast Stark Street

The Portland Grief House invites you to join The Lost Table, a resilient, welcoming space to gather in community and share experiences of loss. Bring a dish, pull up a chair, and share your heart in good company. Grief can be hard to understand, and sometimes what is needed most is community, conversation, and food. During the gathering, each participant will have a few minutes to share their grief in whatever way feels right—whether it's someone who is missed, something that has changed, a loss being carried, or an experience that continues to shape. While one person shares, the rest will listen with care and presence. Save time at the end of the evening to thank one another and connect, but please refrain from interrupting or responding during the sharing portion.

Día de Muertos and the month of November invite you to reflect on and remember loved ones who have passed—a time to celebrate their lives and meet death not with fear, but with love, memory, storytelling, and even humor. Mario Mesquita will lead an opening creative activity exploring memory and the role of cuisine in honoring loved ones, building toward a collective community tribute. Participants are welcome to bring a photograph of a loved one or create an offering featuring their loved one's name.

Bea Ogden will present the Hungry Ghost tradition and make an offering for the community ofrenda, opening a cultural exchange around how different traditions honor and remember the dead. Mario and Bea will also guide participants in writing a community poem, inviting each person to contribute a line or dedication to place on the altar.

Please bring:

  • A dish to share, along with any serving utensils it requires. You're welcome to bring something simple—such as a bag of chips or fresh fruit—or a favorite dish that reminds you of a loved one.
  • Your own dinnerware (plate, bowl, utensils, and napkin).
  • Optional: A beverage for yourself if you would like something other than water.
  • Optional: A photograph of a loved one to include in our community tribute

The Portland Grief House is honored to continue this tradition, originally started by Side Yard Farm. El Centro Milagro is excited to partner with Portland Grief House to create a welcoming space for both English- and Spanish-speaking community members to gather, remember, and heal together.

Learn & Grow: SPC Book Club!

Our first SPC Book Club is officially happening! Men, women, and all single parents are welcome. No assigned reading this time — our first meetup is about meeting each other, swapping ideas, and choosing our very first book together. Bring a book (or a few!) you think we should add to the list.

The meetup will take place in Hillsboro near Main & Brookwood. Full address will be released to those who RSVP.

Our only request? Please leave the self-help books at home. We’re single parents. We get enough advice already. Give us funny, witty, slightly inappropriate, relatable, or laugh-so-you-don’t-cry reads about single parenting, dating, divorce, starting over, or the general ridiculousness of adult life.

🍷 BYOB + BYOF — bring whatever you’d like to sip and snack on. Sharing is optional. We’re parents. We understand hiding the good snacks.

👧 Kids are welcome! Have them bring coloring books, tablets, games, or other activities to keep themselves entertained while the grown-ups get some much-needed adult conversation.

🏡 We’ll be meeting at a private residence, so the address will be shared with confirmed RSVPs and will not be posted publicly. Bring a book. Bring a beverage. Bring your sense of humor. We will then meet every other Tuesday until the book has been completed!

*Free* for all!

We’ll pick the book. The kids will probably interrupt us. It’ll be great. 📖🍷😂

JuneMap

Hosted at June in Beaverton, this gathering welcomes queer women, sapphic people, and trans and nonbinary individuals in an affirming space. Expect relaxed conversation alongside playful activities designed to make introductions comfortable and fun. It is not a speed dating format. Participants rotate through small groups of three to six and take part in Q&A prompts, trivia, simple crafts, puzzles, and similar icebreakers. The goal is to encourage connections that can lead to friendships or relationships while strengthening community bonds. Event photography will occur, and attendance indicates consent to be photographed and to the use of images for future promotional purposes.

Skip the Small Talk Night at Migration Brewing - Williams: Thursday, November 12, 2026

We've all heard that making friends is hard, loneliness is an epidemic, and the internet is making us all forget how to be humans. So let’s ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING about it and talk to other human beings! You’ll pair up with the other nice people who showed up, and you’ll switch off partners every so often (kinda like speed-dating, but without the speed and without the dating). We'll have a fabulous host leading the whole shebang so it won't be awkward, and we'll give you question cards to guide conversation just a few notches deeper than you'd usually go so you don't accidentally talk about what you do for work six times in a row. EVENT START-END TIME | 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm PT AGE RANGE | 21+: While many folks who attend our events are in their 20s and 30s, all guests 21+ will be enthusiastically welcome! Please be sure to bring your government-issued ID, as this venue is 21+. There will be food and drinks for sale!

Infant and Toddler Feeding Support

Join us each month to discuss infant and toddler feeding in a supportive, community environment. Led by International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs), this group covers a wide range of topics, including breast/bodyfeeding, pumping, bottle feeding, introducing solids, and weaning.

Because feeding is deeply connected to daily life, we also welcome open discussions on related parenting topics such as sleep patterns, soothing a crying baby, and navigating the postpartum adjustment. Come connect, share experiences, and get expert guidance on your family's feeding journey.

Get Together With Your Unhoused Neighbors! Come Socialize (age 18+) *Hands On*

At Operation Nightwatch, volunteers play an important role to those who come through our doors each night; and not only through serving food and distributing essential items. Social connection is at the heart of our mission, and we strive to provide our guests with hospitality and unconditional positive regard with each interaction. Three nights a week we provide a comfortable atmosphere for guests to socialize over a cup of coffee, connect with their greater community of unhoused and housed folks alike, cultivate friendships…and probably beat you at Scrabble. Volunteers are asked to arrive at 5:45 pm for a brief orientation and tour of our facilities before being assigned tasks. Throughout the evening you may be tasked with a variety of duties ranging from coffee service to bathroom monitor, but our core mission remains: providing hospitality & social connection. We invite you to show up just as you are, and expect you to extend the same grace to our guests. The majority of our guests are experiencing houselessness, but many do have housing and may even live nearby. Operation Nightwatch welcomes everyone without question. Every meal or cup of coffee is served with kindness and respect. Since 1981, Operation Nightwatch has been providing hospitality to alleviate the isolation experienced by those living on the streets. We also distribute essential items and offer drop in mental health support to those who request it. Our hospitality center is one of the few who offer nighttime services, and for this reason acts as a “last stop” and meeting place for folks to meet their basic needs, wind down, and connect with their community. Project Requirements: Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older to attend this project. If you plan to bring guests you MUST reserve slots for them. The best way to do this is to create a Volunteer Team, then sign up your team for this project. IMPORTANT NOTE: You are responsible for ensuring that everyone signed up through your team attends - only sign up team members who have confirmed their availability. Teams that repeatedly sign up, but do not show up or show up with fewer volunteers than they signed up, may be removed. To add or remove team members from a project, click on "My Account" and then "My Teams," above. Click "Sign Up" below to reserve your spot! Need help signing up? Email [email protected].
