Singles Give Back: Special Olympics Oregon Swim Competition Volunteering

Let’s spend a Sunday doing some good and getting to know each other along the way! Join our 30s & 40s Singles Group to support athletes at Special Olympics Oregon’s Beaverton Regional Aquatics competition on Sunday, November 1.

Expect swimming, teamwork, plenty of cheering, and a chance to connect with other community-minded singles. The event coordinator is excited to have our group help!

We have two exciting ways to participate based on how involved you want to be.

🙌 Path 1: Come volunteer directly with us

No sports knowledge, athletic ability, or previous volunteer experience needed. The Special Olympics Oregon team will train you onsite and assign your role at check-in.

You might help with:

  • Athlete escorts: Guide swimmers from staging to their lanes and then to awards.
  • Timing: Time races and call the finish order.
  • Results: Deliver and record race results.
  • Awards: Prepare medals and ribbons and help with presentations.
  • Developmental skills: Help with staging, escorting, and timing for the morning skills competition.

Have relevant experience? Let the team know at check-in!

You can choose between a full-day shift of about 8–9 hours or a half-day shift of about 4–4.5 hours, depending on availability.

All volunteers receive a Special Olympics Oregon T-shirt, and full-day volunteers receive lunch.

📝 How to join as a volunteer

  1. RSVP here so we know you’re joining our Meetup group.
  2. Register directly with Special Olympics Oregon and choose your shift (link here or in comments). Your Meetup RSVP alone does not reserve a volunteer spot.
  3. Watch for a Meetup message from me! I’ll check in to confirm your shift, help with questions, and coordinate our group.

Please register promptly if you’d like to volunteer, since shifts have limited spaces. Follow the arrival and check-in instructions for your selected shift.

💛 A small commitment that makes a big difference

The event team relies on registered volunteers to keep the competition running smoothly. Please choose a shift you can commit to attending in full and plan ahead for the day.

Of course, unexpected things happen! If you can no longer volunteer, please notify the Special Olympics coordinator promptly, update your volunteer registration, and update your Meetup RSVP too. Keeping everyone informed as timely as possible gives the team time to adjust.

📣 Path 2: Prefer to cheer? Join the audience!

You can also support the athletes from the sidelines. If committing to volunteering in a shift isn’t the right fit, or the shifts have filled, come enjoy the competition and help us give the swimmers an enthusiastic audience!

Please let me know whether you’re volunteering or coming to cheer, so I can coordinate our group. Only people registered directly with Special Olympics Oregon will be counted as volunteers.

Which ever path you choose, we’re happy to have you!

Come lend a hand, bring your cheering voice, and spend a Sunday supporting our greater Portland community. 💛

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: TKO recognizes that the trails we work on travel through the traditional lands of many Indigenous tribes and communities. We are the most recent in a long line of stewards to this land, and it is our responsibility to do so with humility and respect. We are grateful to these tribes and their descendants for being the original and continuing stewards of these spaces, and encourage everyone to go beyond a land acknowledgment by supporting Indigenous communities and organizations in your area.

EQUITY & INCLUSION: TKO seeks to make Oregon’s trails a place where people can go to connect with nature and one another. Not everyone feels safe or welcome in the outdoors, and we commit to being part of the solution to this problem and to enact change. Conduct, speech, or expressions that target any individual or group will not be tolerated by TKO.

PERSONAL SAFETY: Your physical and emotional safety is our number one priority. If a person’s actions or comments make you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, you may: interrupt directly, talk with a TKO leader, and/or inform TKO staff via the anonymous post-event survey.

While TKO no longer requires masking/vaccination for our events, we do support those who choose to mask for their own safety. We ask participants to respect the health of folks who wear masks by distancing or wearing a mask while in close proximity.

Make Meals from the Heart at Ronald McDonald House - East (age 13+) *Hands On*

Ronald McDonald House OregonMap

OUR ORGANIZATION'S MISSON Ronald McDonald House Oregon provides access to medical care, a home away from home, and a community of support for seriously ill or injured children and their families. We are proud to say that we provide this housing, access to medical care, and compassionate hospitality at no cost to the families serve making it possible for them to focus on what matters most – each other. The families that stay at Ronald McDonald House are often far away from family, friends and other support systems that would normally help them through a difficult time. Families often return to the House after a long day at the hospital or traveling and cooking a meal for themselves may be low on their long list of priorities. The chance for these families to sit down to a home-cooked meal is another way that makes the Ronald McDonald House truly a “home away from home” for families whose children are critically ill. To feed our families, we rely on the dedication of hundreds of community members across the state who donate, volunteer, and advocate to ensure that no family goes hungry while in our Houses. FOR THIS PROJECT The group will prepare dinner on-site for the families at Ronald McDonald House. Volunteers will be asked to bring ingredients to contribute to the meal. The volunteer leader will contact each volunteer to instruct you on what ingredients to bring. We're counting on you! It is imperative that if you sign up for this project, you intend to be there and provide the ingredients that are assigned to you. When volunteers don't show up, we're not able to make the meal. If you are unable to attend, please let your Volunteer Leader know ASAP! Please note: No volunteer will be turned away due to lack of resources. If bringing a food item is a hardship for you, please alert the Volunteer Leader. VOLUNTEERING WITH US Volunteers will work together in the kitchen, guided by the Volunteer Leader, to prepare dinner for around 35 of our guests. All ingredients must be prepped on site or brought from a commercial kitchen such as a store, bakery, or local restaurant. The meal will be set out buffet style from 6 – 7pm. Even though dinner is set out buffet style for families to serve themselves, we ask that volunteers package up all the remaining food around 6:45pm in our to-go leftover containers and place them in our leftover fridge. Volunteers are expected to clean up all the dishes and space that they used to prepare the meal. We also encourage volunteers to eat the prepared meal as well after families serve themselves. When You Arrive: Our East House is located on Legacy Emmanuel’s campus. Please help us leave the lot closest to the House open for our guests and families. If you need to unload anything, please pull into the closest lot to unload, and then move your vehicle afterwards. You will receive parking instructions prior to your shift. General Guidelines: You will be unable to volunteer if you’ve had any symptoms of contagious illness within the past 48 hours. Communal spaces are mask-optional. Volunteers will be asked to make a volunteer profile on our VolunteerHub database. The Volunteer Leader will send you these instructions prior to your meal shift. Please do not wear cologne or perfume in the house. Please do not take pictures of families staying at the house. You may take pictures of the house, your group, and any staff/volunteers who agree to be photographed. To assure the protection of the confidentiality and privacy of families, volunteers will hold in strict confidence all information acquired through service at the house, including but not limited to: names, addresses, diagnoses, and personal circumstances. Volunteers may not, under any circumstances, take responsibility for supervising or caring for children in the absence of a parent or guardian. Project Requirements: You will be unable to volunteer if you’ve had any symptoms of contagious illness or have been exposed or diagnosed with COVID-19 within the past 48 hours. All volunteers will be asked to make a volunteer profile ahead of time through Ronald McDonald House & VolunteerHub. Please show up on time and bring the assigned ingredients with you. We are relying on you in order to be able to feed our guest families. Hands On volunteers must be 13 years of age or older to attend this project; any volunteer under age 16 must attend with a parent or adult chaperone. All volunteers under 18 are required to bring a Youth Volunteer Release Form signed by their parent or legal guardian. Please download, complete, and bring this waiver with you on the day of the project. If you plan to bring children or guests you MUST reserve slots for them. The best way to do this is to create a Volunteer Team, then sign up your team for this project. IMPORTANT NOTE: You are responsible for ensuring that everyone signed up through your team attends - only sign up team members who have confirmed their availability. Teams that repeatedly sign up, but do not show up or show up with fewer volunteers than they signed up, may be removed. To add or remove team members from a project, click on "My Account" and then "My Teams," above. Click "Sign Up" below to reserve your spot! Need help signing up? Call 503-200-3355.

Political Prisoner Letter Writing

We're hosting the Portland Anarchist Black Cross for a regular prisoner letter writing event!

Writing letters to political prisoners is a gesture of solidarity to break the social isolation of imprisonment, and to show those trapped in the carceral system that there are people on the outside who support and value them. Prison is a lonely place, but for a brief moment, an incarcerated person can live life outside of prison - even if it's just as long as your letter.

No experience required, just a little of your time to write about whatever comes to your mind.

We'll be hosting this event every first Sunday from 3p to 5p!

‼️As always, events are sober, sensory-friendly, and masks are required. Find our full accessibility statement on our site

✅ Testing highly encouraged prior attending! (You can pick up a test from us for free)

But those who really benefit from our crafting are the recipients of the handmade treasures. Join in this project and knit, machine sew, or crochet anything baby to be donated to Rose Haven, Virginia Garcia Clinic, Ronald McDonald House, Family Peace Center of Washington County, and Binky Patrol - Beaverton.
