About this event
Simon Fraser University's Evan Freeman presents his research on the ancient Greek krater, a vessel for mixing wine and water, and its continued representation across Christian, Jewish, and Islamic contexts in late antiquity and the Middle Ages. Focusing on the art and ritual of the Byzantine Empire, Freeman shows how the form, function, and symbolic significance of the krater were adapted to serve new religious and political purposes even as the memory of its original ancient name and historical function endured.
This talk is made possible by the generous support of the Mary Ausplund Tooze Endowed Visiting Professor of Islamic & Ancient Art fund.
