“Bread and Roses”- an American Celebration of the Solstice

At the height of the holiday season, a group of workers and their families discover that their wages are going to be cut. Together, they decide to fight for a better life. As the struggle drags on, they find joy and community through the music and stories of their different traditions….and of this new world they now share. Featuring early 20th century American classics, alongside songs and folktales from Eastern Europe, Italy, the Philippines, and the Latin American diaspora, Bread and Roses celebrates the tapestry of people who helped to build this country, proclaiming “We all deserve joy, We all deserve beauty!”

Portland Revels’ annual holiday Midwinter Revels production celebrates the winter solstice and the return of the light at the darkest time of year. Each season the production is set in a different place and time, allowing us to explore different cultures and music traditions, while grounding the show in our familiar rituals and themes.
