The Beauty Queen of Leenane — A Dark Irish Comedy

Looking for a theater experience that's a little different? Scarlet Sails Cultural Foundation brings its Eastern European approach to theater to Martin McDonagh's award-winning play, The Beauty Queen of Leenane. The story takes place in a small village in Ireland, where 40-year-old Maureen lives with her aging mother, Mag. The two women argue about everything, from what to eat to who controls the television. Their conversations can be hilarious, but there's a lot of anger and resentment beneath the jokes. Maureen dreams of escaping her lonely life. Her mother has other plans. And when a chance for love comes along, things get complicated.

McDonagh has a remarkable way of making audiences laugh at situations that suddenly become disturbing. His play is funny, uncomfortable, sometimes shocking, and full of surprises.

Scarlet Sails is a Portland-area theater company founded in 2015 by artists trained in Eastern European theatrical traditions. This production brings that background to one of Ireland's best-known modern plays, which went on to win four Tony Awards on Broadway.

If you're visiting Portland or looking for something beyond the usual night out, join Chapel Theatre in nearby Milwaukie for an evening of live theater.
