About this event

Emmylou Harris is one of the most admired and influential voices in American music. Her work as a singer and songwriter spans more than five decades. She has won 14 Grammys, three CMA Awards and four Americana Awards, and received the Billboard Century Award. She was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2008 and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018. Harris shook up country radio in the 1970s and established herself as a defining artist of a generation. She has sold more than 15 million records across more than 25 albums, and she is known as much for her impeccable taste and straightforward songwriting as for her incomparably expressive voice. Her collaborators read like a history of American song: Gram Parsons, Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Mark Knopfler, Lucinda Williams, Elvis Costello and many more. Decades into her career, Harris still shares the hard-earned wisdom that comes with time, and she has never stopped looking ahead.

Opening the night is seven-time Grammy winner Daniel Lanois, the producer and songwriter behind one of the most important turns in Harris's career. In 1995 the two made Wrecking Ball together. The album traded the clean lines of classic country for shimmering guitars, deep drums and a haunting atmosphere. It won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album, reintroduced Harris to a new generation, and helped lay the groundwork for modern Americana. On paper it was an unlikely pairing. Rolling Stone called Lanois "the most important producer to emerge in the 80s." Lanois was the sonic architect behind U2's The Joshua Tree, Peter Gabriel's So and Dylan's Oh Mercy. What the two shared was a belief that a song's emotional truth lives in its space and texture as much as in its words. The album has since been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, and Lanois reunited with Harris and drummer Brian Blade to celebrate it. Thirty years later they share a stage again: Lanois with his own songs and signature soundscapes, then Harris with a set drawn from a remarkable career.
