Dr. Katharine Hayhoe: Climate Action & Conversation Across Divides

Climate change, especially in recent years, has escalated not only as a global environmental crisis but as a highly intensified challenge in a time of political divides—often making one feel overwhelmed and powerless. How can better conversations help move individuals, communities, and the planet into a place of collective solutions?

Called “one of the nation’s most effective communicators on climate change” by The New York Times, Dr. Katharine Hayhoe, chief scientist for The Nature Conservancy, has an uncanny ability to navigate all sides of the conversation on climate. With a singular balance of scientific rigor and storytelling, patience and empathy, and an abiding adherence to her faith, Hayhoe is often able to reach audiences that other climate scientists have not been able to reach —demonstrating that by finding shared values we can better connect our unique identities to collective action.

WorldOregon welcomes Katharine Hayhoe back to Portland for this rich conversation exploring how to incorporate climate change into both our public decisions and private conversations at a moment of urgency when climate action and environmental policy are at a crossroads. About the Speaker
Dr. Katharine Hayhoe is an atmospheric scientist whose work bridges climate science, risks, and resilience. As Chief Scientist for The Nature Conservancy (TNC), she directs the organization’s global scientific strategy and leads a global community of more than 1,000 TNC scientists and science staff whose work underpins every aspect of TNC’s mission: from conserving lands and waters to developing scalable, science-based solutions to the biodiversity and climate crises.

Recognized among TIME’s “100 Most Influential People” and a United Nations Champion of the Earth, Katharine is known worldwide for her ability to make complex science accessible and meaningful, and for connecting climate and nature to people’s values in ways that inspire action. Hayhoe is the Endowed Professor in Public Policy and Public Law and Paul W. Horn Distinguished Professor at Texas Tech University and author of Saving Us: A Climate Scientist’s Case for Hope and Healing in a Divided World. Read more. Sponsored by the M.J. Science On Tap: Save the Planet: Recycle! …or Not?

Alberta Rose Theatre3000 NE Alberta St Portland

Few conservation behaviors have captured the public’s interest as much as recycling. But sorting your trash and placing it at the curb isn’t recycling . . . it’s just the start of a long and somewhat surprising journey for your empty milk cartons and back issues of Cat Fancy.

  • Where do those materials go once in the bin?
  • How do they get sorted out? And where do they go from there?
  • What about those rumors that recycling trucks just deliver materials to the landfill, or dump them in the ocean?
  • How can recycling even deliver environmental benefit, given all of the trucks and machinery involved?
  • What’s the deal with plastic, anyway?

After pioneering recycling policy in the late 1980s, Oregon is now implementing the first “extended producer responsibility” law for packaging in the U.S. The Plastic Pollution and Recycling Modernization Act, adopted in 2021, was launched July 1, 2025 and is designed to provide residents and businesses a recycling system that can be trusted to deliver the environmental benefits that recycling has long promised. But even a fully modernized recycling system has limited potential to stem the tide of unsustainable levels of production and consumption. Explore how recycling is simultaneously necessary and insufficient, how recycling needs to be improved, and what else Oregon could be doing to use materials sustainably.

David Allaway and Justin Gast work at the OR Department of Environmental Quality, and between them have over 57 years of experience with recycling systems. In addition to his time at DEQ, Justin has worked at the local and national levels for the likes of Resource Recycling magazine, the Washington County (OR) Solid Waste & Recycling Program and The Recycling Partnership. David has testified before Congress and co-chaired Oregon’s Recycling Steering Committee, and his work has been featured in Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, the National Law Review, Time, Sierra and PBS Frontline.

Henry Diltz – Behind The Lens

Henry Diltz, a renowned music photographer, has shot over 250 album covers in the ’60s and ’70s, including The Doors’ iconic Morrison Hotel album cover. His fly-on-the-wall style portraits feature legendary artists like the Eagles, Neil Young, Crosby Stills & Nash, Joni Mitchell, and Jimi Hendrix. He was the official photographer at Woodstock in 1969, and his work has appeared in esteemed publications such as The New York Times, Rolling Stone and Life Magazine. Known for his intuitive composition and use of natural light, Diltz continues his career documenting the music scene around Southern California and across the globe. He is one of a select few who has been awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from The Grammys, The Lucie, and the International Photography Hall of Fame. His impact on rock culture is immeasurable, capturing authentic moments that define an era. “I am amazed at the accumulation of images that has resulted, simply by doing what I love to do, day after day after day,” he says. “It’s a result of being with countless people over the years, waiting at the sidelines for the moment to happen. Photography has been my passport, and I have arrived in the present, where I have always been, camera in hand. There! That says it best for me!” ALL SALES ARE FINAL. Psychedelics and the Reimagining of Aging

What if getting older could open the door to something new? Join Portland Psychedelic Society for a lively, thoughtful—and yes, fun—conversation about psychedelics, aging, and the many ways we might reimagine what it means to grow older. Older adults are increasingly becoming part of the psychedelic conversation. So what’s behind that growing curiosity? What might psychedelic experiences have to offer as we navigate life’s later chapters? And could psychedelics change the way we think about aging itself? We’ve gathered three fascinating voices for the conversation:
Abbie Rosner is a baby boomer and writer focused on how older adults are exploring the drugs of our youth in ways that enhance how we age. Her new book, Psychedelics and the Counterculture of Aging (Park Street Press) is the first to document the emerging trend of older adults using psychedelics for individual and collective transformation. Abbie also writes on Substack: The ELDEREVOLUTION Newsletter on Psychedelics in Older Life. Her work has been featured in the MAPS Newsletter, Forbes, Next Avenue, Double Blind and other publications. Phyllis Moses, Dedicated to assisting individuals to discover their own resources for growth and healing Steve Rosonke MD, is the founder of Rainfall Medicine, a ketamine center for consciousness and healing. He has also trained with indigenous healers throughout the globe. Come hear their perspectives, ask questions, and explore a topic that is moving well beyond the margins and into the conversation about aging, health, meaning, and possibility.

🌿 Psychedelics for All: We’re committed to accessibility. If cost is a barrier, click here to request a discounted ticket.Come curious. Leave with something to think about. And perhaps a whole new way of looking at getting older.
