Giant Collaborative Neurographic Art

Church of Art1801 Northwest Upshur Street

Church of Art's collaborative neurographics is a mindfulness-based creative activity that provides therapeutic relaxation through intuitive mark-making on a grand scale. For this mindfulness-based collaborative art activity, Church of Art will cover a long row of tables with a roll of paper and acrylic paint pens in a variety of sizes and colors. Participants will move freely around the table, filling the paper with sweeping, colorful doodles to the sounds of calming music. The giant scale allows for whole-arm movements, which signal brains to move out of fight-or-flight mode and into a state of mental relaxation and improved focus. The collaborative aspect of this workshop teaches one to let go of perfection and expectation through shared creative exploration, while working large encourages greater freedom of expression.

Neurographic art is a relatively new form of focused, intentional mark-making that uses curved, bold lines, vibrant colors and calming patterns. Physician and neurographics practitioner Ruben Halperin, M.D., will be the guide, co-facilitating this workshop with artist and Church of Art founder, Erika Halperin.

Immerse yourself in this beneficial form of meditative doodling and experience the mood-boosting effect of creativity coupled with community gathering.

Using paper and acrylic markers. All materials and supplies are provided by the studio.

Tickets Include:

  • 2 hours of guided creative exploration in a supportive, friendly environment with all supplies included.
  • Light snacks and non-alcoholic beverages are included.
  • That wonderful feeling of joy and connectedness that comes from a few hours of in-person artistic play with other adults.

Slow Shapes & Softening for Creative Joy

Emily Wright

Join Emily Wright for a special offering that will weave together gentle postures, meditation and creative practice to unwind tension, tend to fatigue, and brighten intuitive, creative force. The practice will include yin yoga, yoga nidra, and a lightly guided, silent painting meditation. All levels and backgrounds are welcome.

$25 – the practice + all creative supplies

$55 – the practice, all creative supplies + a bottle of fine, natural scent, 5 ml roll-on. This special scent crafted by artist Catherine Haley Epstein blends natural, high-quality extracts of cedar, violet and apricot for a light, peace-inspiring aroma. A lovely add on to any restorative or creative practice.

The practice of Yoga Nidra is thousands of years old yet immensely relevant to our time. A systematic process of deliberate relaxation that combines breath, body-scan and imagery-based techniques to serve as a powerful antidote to overstimulation, burnout and exhaustion.

Yoga Nidra is an accessible go-to practice in any wellness toolkit for sharpening cognition, bolstering creativity and promoting a healthy response to stress. Through a 20-minute practice, studies have shown that it improves neuroplasticity, resets dopamine levels and supports healthy central nervous system regulation.

Additionally, its ancient wisdom undeniably invites in a deeper knowing of the soul. This more spiritual angle empowers a release of fear and unwanted habits and enables new alignment to authenticity, freedom and heart.

Class Description: Bring a photograph (approximately wallet size) of yourself or someone you would like to make a collage portrait of. We will use magazines and other paper scraps to make a fun and funky portrait suitable for framing and giving as a gift.

Supply list — All supplies will be provided.

I have been working in the medium of collage for nearly 30 years. I enjoy the infinite variety of ways one can combine different paper and media together to create layered and nuanced images. Collage allows the mind to relax and open to possibilities, almost like putting together a puzzle but only you know the picture on the box top. I enjoy helping others to tap into their creative side, sharing the benefit of my years of trial and error, and laughing together over the joyfulness that comes from making art!

Drawing and Painting for Adults

Church of Art1801 Northwest Upshur Street

2-hour blocks of unstructured art studio time on Thursday evenings for you to paint, draw, collage, enjoy our collection of art books with a cup of hot tea or coffee (provided), or just hang out and chat in a warm, inviting space.

Friend date? Romantic date? Date with yourself? Church of Art studio is that (alcohol-free) third space to hang out, either on your own or with others. No previous art experience is necessary. If you would like some guidance, Erika Halperin (the studio founder) will be in the studio and available to suggest activities based on your interests and skill level.

If you’re coming on your own and would like some company, Erika will happily spend time drawing, painting, or collaging with you. If you already know what you want to do or want to be left alone to read, write or make art in peace (or with a headset on), that’s ok, too.

All materials and supplies are included to make a collage, sketch with charcoal or graphite sticks, or play around with gouache or watercolor paints.

Come and go as you like during the two-hour block.

Non-alcoholic beverages and snacks are included.
