“Middletown”

Ekklesia Theatre launches its “Love Your Neighbor” season with Will Eno’s funny, haunting “Middletown,” Oct. 23-Nov. 1 at Magenta Theater, in partnership with NAMI Southwest Washington. The play follows an unlikely friendship between longtime Middletown resident John Dodge and newcomer Mary Swanson. Around them, a librarian, a mechanic, a police officer, tourists and other townspeople try to make sense of their lives — and one another. Their paths cross in surprising ways, taking audiences everywhere from a library to outer space. Shows are 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays from Oct. 23-31 and 2 p.m. Sundays through Nov. 1 at 1108 Main St., Vancouver. NAMI Southwest Washington will be at the theater after performances on Oct. 25 and 30 to discuss loneliness and mental health. Plays are recommended for viewers age 13 and older. Tickets are $15 at ekklesiatheatre.com/tickets.

This free community event is sponsored by the Clark College ASCC Student Life Philosophy Program. This film reveals a truth behind the climate crisis: the role of the U.S. military as the world’s largest institutional polluter, tracing the link between war, empire and ecological destruction. Drawing on powerful testimonies from veterans, scientists and frontline communities, it uncovers how military operations poison ecosystems, accelerate global warming and sacrifice the future for expansion.

Permanent Ink: Why We Still Love Print in the Digital Age

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text margin_bottom=”0″ css=”.vc_custom_1793313257834{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]We once depended on handwriting for recording information. Then the printing press changed everything. We could record, store, and access information in thousands of copies. Five hundred years later, the digital revolution is transforming things again. Today, we get information from millions of websites in milliseconds with search engines and AI.

Technology has always shaped the way we’ve stayed informed, expressed ourselves, and stayed connected as communities. What lessons do earlier technologies, like print, hold for us today in the age of AI and digital overload? And why, despite the speed and convenience of newer technologies, is print more popular than ever?

Ridgefield Public School Foundation’s 10th Annual Turkey Trot

Union Ridge Elementary School330 N 5th Ave.
Thursday, November 26 | Union Ridge Elementary School

The 10th Annual Ridgefield Public Schools Foundation Turkey Trot, presented by the Cowlitz Indian Tribe and Columbia Credit Union, takes place on a scenic route through Ridgefield, traveling through Abrams Park and along Lake River. It’s a 5K family friendly run/walk event that raises funds to help the Foundation’s efforts to provide scholarships and grant opportunities to students, teachers, and staff. Last year’s event had more than 1,000 participants, and we hope to grow our event even more this year as we support Ridgefield schools and their students.

Register Now

This year’s 10th Annual Turkey Trot, presented by Cowlitz Indian Tribe and Columbia Credit Union will take place on Thursday, November 26th, starting with the Drumstick Dash—a short run for children ages 5 and under and not yet in kindergarten —at 8:45 am. The main event, a 5K run/walk, follows at 9:00 am. Both events will begin and end at Union Ridge Elementary School in downtown Ridgefield.

While the Turkey Trot is a fun run/walk without a formal timer, participants are encouraged to enjoy the spirit of the event and work up an appetite for their Thanksgiving feast.

Race packet pick up and in-person registration will be held on Wednesday, November 25th, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm, and again on race day from 7:45 to 8:45 am in the Union Ridge Elementary School Gym. A limited number of extra T-shirts will be available for purchase during in-person registration.

To ensure you get a race T-shirt, please register by Wednesday, November 11th. Additionally, we encourage participants to bring nonperishable food items to packet pick-up for donation to the Ridgefield Family Resource Center. Each item donated will earn you a ticket for a chance to win $100 in local restaurant gift cards.

All proceeds from the event will be equally shared between the Ridgefield Public Schools Foundation and the Ridgefield Family Resource Center, making this a great way to give back to our community while embracing the Thanksgiving spirit. See you there!

RACE DETAILS

DRUMSTICK DASH

Once again our Turkey Trot will feature a Drumstick Dash, a short run for our youngest participants ages 5 and under (not yet in kindergarten). We will make an announcement at 8:40 am for any children interested in participating to report to the starting line. The Drumstick Dash will begin at 8:45 am.

5K FUN RUN/WALK

Our main event, the 5K run/walk, will get started at 9 am. Those who are planning to run should position themselves at the front of the crowd, closest to the starting line. Walkers, please make way for runners who are trying to move to the front. There is no official timer for our fun run/walk event, so those interested in knowing their finish times should plan to use their own watches to time themselves. For safety, please keep in mind that at certain points on the route you may be asked to stop for vehicle traffic (vehicles have the right of way during the Turkey Trot) so finish times could be impacted.

5K ROUTE:

The course begins on 5th Ave. at Union Ridge Elementary and then heads down to Abrams Park and continues northeast along the trail bordering Gee Creek. From there the route takes participants up Heron Drive to Main Ave. It then continues south to the corner of Main & Pioneer and takes participants down to the Ridgefield waterfront via the railroad overpass. Participants will follow the course along Lake River and turn around near the south end of Carty Lake. The course then continues in reverse, back up to the corner of Main & Pioneer, where participants will head north for one block before heading east up Simons St. to finish back at Union Ridge Elementary.

EVENT SAFETY NOTE

Roads remain open throughout the event. Please stay to the right on roads and use sidewalks whenever possible. Once again, this is a family friendly fun run/walk event. Participants may be subject to brief waits for vehicle traffic. Since roads remain open, vehicle traffic does have the right away.

BRING ITEMS FOR THE RIDGEFIELD FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER

The Ridgefield Family Resource Center is seeking non-perishable foods (especially cereal, rice, pasta sauce, canned fruit, canned meat, and canned pasta meals) as well as new socks and stretchy knit gloves. For each item (non-perishable food items, pairs of socks, and pairs of gloves) brought to packet pick-up/in-person registration on Wednesday or Thursday morning, you will receive one ticket for entry into a prize drawing for $100 of local restaurant gift cards.

T-SHIRTS AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE

For any participants who do not meet the T-shirt registration deadline of Nov. 12th at 10 pm, a limited number of T-shirts will be available for purchase at packet pick-up/in-person registration at a cost of $5 each.

EVENT PARKING

Parking will be available at Union Ridge Elementary, the RACC, and the Ridgefield Church of the Nazarene. Street parking throughout downtown Ridgefield is also an option for participants.

“Lost” Staged Readings

A concise program of staged readings explores what it means to be lost. The lineup includes Words, Words, Words, which turns the classic idea of monkeys at typewriters into a lively exchange among the primates themselves. Sure Thing follows two people in a café as an offstage bell resets their missteps, clearing the path toward a genuine connection. The Items Forgotten centers on spouses Kira and Travis, locked out yet again on a freezing night, whose search for a spare key prompts doubts about memory and marriage. Alfred and Lily and Their Marvelous Tank in the Forest follows two pond dwellers moved to a strange tank by unseen caretakers. Lily embraces the change, while Alfred notices the water receding and neighbors vanishing, raising unsettling questions. Written by David Ives and Tara Meddaugh and directed by Dylan Sladky, this PG-13 program runs about 30 minutes. The venue is open to the public, and donations are welcome but optional. Presented as part of a First Friday performance series.

Vancouver Community Tree Lighting 2026

–Presented By: Rotary Club of Vancouver

–Dates: November 27, 2026

–Location: Esther Short Park

–Address: 301 W 8th St., Vancouver, WA 98660

–Time: 4:00 PM to 6:30 PM

Downtown Vancouver turns festive on Friday, November 27, 2026, when the Rotary Club of Vancouver presents the annual Community Tree Lighting at the Vancouver Waterfront and Esther Short Park. This free, family-friendly celebration is one of Vancouver’s signature holiday events and a great way to welcome the season. Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive on the Columbia River, a lighted vehicle parade rolls through downtown, and the community gathers as the tree lights up at 6 p.m.

Event Schedule

Waterfront arrival: Head to the Vancouver Waterfront in the late afternoon to see Santa and Mrs. Claus sail in by tugboat, escorted by a flotilla of Columbia River Christmas ships. This arrival honors the city’s riverfront roots and sets the tone for the evening.

Lighted vehicle parade: After greeting the crowd at the Waterfront, Santa and Mrs. Claus join a parade of decorated vehicles that travels up to downtown and into Esther Short Park, where the main festivities continue.

Tree lighting at 6:00 p.m.: The community gathers around the big holiday tree in Esther Short Park for the countdown. When Santa flips the switch, the park comes alive with lights, music, and photo ops.

What You’ll Find at Esther Short Park
  • Holiday Market at the Hilton Vancouver: Browse local, handmade gifts and treats from 3 to 8 p.m. inside the Hilton, adjacent to Esther Short Park.
  • Live music and on-stage entertainment leading up to the lighting
  • Carriage rides along 6th Street (arrive early; they’re popular)
  • Family photo stations, including Santa photos after the lighting
  • Frozen: Anna/Elsa/Olaf character appearances for kids and photos
  • The official community tree lighting at 6 p.m.

Cost: Free and open to the public.

Location & Parking

Locations: Festivities take place at two connected spots — the Vancouver Waterfront (for the tugboat/ship arrival) and Esther Short Park, 605 Esther St., Vancouver, WA (for the parade arrival, music, and tree lighting). Both are in downtown Vancouver and walkable.

Parking: City lots around Esther Short Park open at or before 3 p.m.; Rotary notes that a $5 parking donation is requested in some lots. Plan to arrive early for the closest spaces or consider rideshare/transit due to the downtown location and holiday crowds.

Do I Need Tickets?

No — the Vancouver Community Tree Lighting is a free community event presented by the Rotary Club of Vancouver. Just dress for the weather and show up.

Why You Won’t Want to Miss This Event

This is one of the most festive tree lightings in southwest Washington: river arrival, lighted parade, downtown setting, and a park that stays beautifully lit through the season.

Make It a Vancouver Holiday Night

Before or after the lighting, explore downtown restaurants, grab hot drinks, or stroll the Waterfront for more lights. You can find more seasonal events on our Vancouver WA events calendar.

La Ratoncita Presumida / The Vain Little Mouse

Puppet show presented by Venezuelan Americans, Melissa and Carlos Bertran. A bilingual (Spanish/English) story from Venezuela. In this story, the tiny heroine thinks herself much too fine to accept the proposal of a common mouse. Instead, she sets her sights on 'worthier' matches, such as the sun, the wind, and the mountain. This show was developed with the guidance of Venezuelan Americans and features Venezuelan music. A truly bilingual experience!

Stories and Songs of Woody Guthrie: A Musical History Performance by Joel Underwood

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1793138732555{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”] Musician, historian, and storyteller Joel Underwood returns to Vancouver for an engaging performance about the life and music of folksinger and activist Woody Guthrie.

Guthrie’s music has seen a resurgence in the past several months, having been featured in recent concerts by artists such as Bruce Springsteen. It resonates with audiences today as much as, or maybe even more than, it did when This Land Is Your Land was released and gained widespread popularity in 1949.

Guthrie composed 26 songs in 30 days while riding along the Columbia River and touring the Grand Coulee Dam Project in 1941. With his unique, authentic voice, he chronicled both the grandeur and the perils of what he called “The Greatest Thing That Man Has Ever Done” as an employee of the Bonneville Power Administration. His time here in the Pacific Northwest inspired a swell of patriotism that led Guthrie to enlist in the U.S. Merchant Marine in World War II, after which he returned home to fame and notoriety, but also to tragedy and tremendous personal loss.

This interactive musical history performance will have you singing along to “Roll on Columbia,” “Pastures of Plenty,” and of course, “This Land is Your Land,” and learning the—sometimes hilarious, sometimes tragic—stories behind the songs.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator color=”chino” border_width=”3″ css=””][mk_padding_divider size=”15″][vc_column_text margin_bottom=”0″ css=”.vc_custom_1793378910642{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]

Set in turn-of-the century New York City, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenaged “newsies.” When titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for what’s right!

Based on the 1992 motion picture and inspired by a true story, Newsies features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken (Little Shop of Horrors, Sister Act) and Jack Feldman and a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein (Kinky Boots).
