Look Back Lectures: 175 Years of the Oregonian

Museum of the Oregon Territory211 Tumwater Drive

Samantha Swindler, a reporter with The Oregonian, will talk about the newspaper's history as it celebrates its 175th anniversary. The Oregonian was founded in 1850. It’s the oldest newspaper on the West Coast and one of Oregon’s oldest continuously operating businesses. The talk will include ties to Clackamas County, such as the race between Portland and Milwaukie to see who would get a newspaper first, and Oregonian editor Thomas Dryer’s infamous feuds with Asahel Bush, editor of the Oregon Statesman, originally founded in Oregon City.

Samantha Swindler joined The Oregonian in 2013 as editor of the weekly Forest Grove Leader suburban newspaper and has since been a columnist, video producer, editor and reporter for The Oregonian/OregonLive. Before moving to the Portland area, she was publisher of the Tillamook Headlight-Herald on the Oregon Coast, and served as editor of rural newspapers in Texas and Kentucky. In 2010, she received the Tom and Pat Gish Award for courage, integrity and tenacity in rural journalism following a series of reports on corruption within an East Kentucky sheriff’s department. She currently covers news and features from Oregon City and other parts of Clackamas County, where she also lives.

Celebrate Diwali: A Classical Indian Dance Performance

Join us for a special classical Indian dance performance by Nartana School of Kuchipudi Dance in honor of Diwali! Kuchipudi is a centuries-old dance form that originates from southern India, and it is one of the 8 classical dance forms of India. It is characterized by a lively tempo, exhilarating footwork, and rounded movements portraying control with abandon and strength with delicacy. Nartana School of Kuchipudi Dance, located in Beaverton, is dedicated to preserving and promoting Kuchipudi dance through education, performance, and community outreach programs. Anuradha Ganesh is the founder and artistic director of Nartana.

Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is a major South Asian festival celebrated by millions of people around the world. Diwali is associated with themes of light overcoming darkness, good overcoming evil, and knowledge overcoming ignorance. Traditions vary among communities, but celebrations commonly include lighting diyas (small oil lamps) and candles, decorating homes, creating colorful rangoli designs for entrances, offering prayers and performing religious ceremonies, fireworks displays, wearing new or festive clothing, and sharing sweets and special foods with family and friends. Diwali occurs annually in autumn, with the primary day of Diwali occurring on the day with the darkest night of the lunar month, the day of the new moon. This year, the holiday starts on Friday, November 6 and spans five days, with the main day of Diwali on Sunday, November 8.

This program is sponsored by LO for LOve. Admission is free, and no tickets are required. Lake Oswego Public Library is located at 706 Fourth Street, Lake Oswego. For more information, contact Allison Arnold at 503-534-5665 or [email protected].

Ken Yarnell

In March of 1977, Milwaukie had our own "madness" experience.

With no warning at all, Milwaukie’s HS Boys Basketball team won two Play-In games to qualify for the AAA State Tournament. The basketball play was earnest, but not extraordinary. The FAN support from the school and the community was amazing and fueled the dark horse ride.

We invite any and all who wish to revive the energy of high school basketball showdowns to a special pop-up event!

On Tuesday, November 10, The Riff on Main Street welcomes Ken Yarnell, a key member of the Medford Black Tornado team that derailed Milwaukie’s trip at the ball in the round of eight.

Ken recently published Coaching Against Champions, which draws from his long, highly respected career as a coach. He’ll tip things off by sharing a handful of stories that recapture the magic every community knows as Oregon HS Basketball.

Sound Bath Experience on the Farm

ChamBurn Farm LLC20925 S Nursery Ln

As autumn settles more deeply into the land, join a cozy evening at ChamBurn Farm in Oregon City, just 20 minutes south of Portland. Begin with a short tour of the beautifully designed farm, then warm up with hot cider and a seasonal snack provided by chef Jim of ChamBurn Farm.

Under a large covered outdoor patio complete with a fire burning in the fireplace, Angela of Breathe Yoga will open the evening's practice with a grounding, inviting you to settle into your body, connect with the earth beneath you, and arrive fully in the moment. Then, Gabrielle of Hearthsounds Sound Healing will guide you into a 75-minute immersive sound bath. Singing bowls, gong, chimes, and other instruments will surround you in layers of sound and vibration, blending with the natural sounds of the farm: the crackle of the fire, the rustling of the evening air, and the occasional call of an animal.

November invites one to slow down. The harvest has been gathered, the landscape is changing, and nature is gradually becoming quieter. This evening is an opportunity to follow that rhythm, settle into stillness, and simply receive.
