Fall Author Series: Jeff VanderMeer In Conversation with A.L. Goldfuss

Jeff VanderMeer's internationally bestselling, critically acclaimed Southern Reach series has been translated into over 37 languages. The first novel, Annihilation, won the Nebula and Shirley Jackson awards, and was made into a movie by Alex Garland in 2018. Called "the weird Thoreau" by The New Yorker, VanderMeer’s nonfiction has appeared in Time, The Nation, the Los Angeles Times, and Esquire, among other publications.

A.L. Goldfuss writes speculative fiction which reviewers have called “rich,” “intense,” “complex,” and “rather grim.” Recent work has won the Brave New Weird award and appeared in The Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy. Goldfuss lives in the Pacific Northwest with stacks of tea and carnivorous plants.

The Fall Author Series is co-sponsored by Spoke & Word Books. Special thanks to the Friends of the Ledding Library for providing the funding that makes this program possible.

Permanent Ink: Why We Still Love Print in the Digital Age

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text margin_bottom=”0″ css=”.vc_custom_1793313257834{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]We once depended on handwriting for recording information. Then the printing press changed everything. We could record, store, and access information in thousands of copies. Five hundred years later, the digital revolution is transforming things again. Today, we get information from millions of websites in milliseconds with search engines and AI.

Technology has always shaped the way we’ve stayed informed, expressed ourselves, and stayed connected as communities. What lessons do earlier technologies, like print, hold for us today in the age of AI and digital overload? And why, despite the speed and convenience of newer technologies, is print more popular than ever?

At the end of the talk, audiences will get the chance to try printing on a portable press.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Geoffrey Turnovsky is professor of French at the University of Washington. Third Tuesday Author: Corey McAuliffe

We're often handed a vocabulary for grief that assumes an ending: stages, closure, moving on. When Corey McAuliffe was a child, her father took each of his daughters out on her own — every third Saturday belonged to her. When he died in January 2019, those Saturday dates were long behind them. Then the number 23 began appearing — on receipts, on clocks, on trail markers — and she started following it. In an effort to reconnect, she brought the dates back, this time on the 23rd of each month. A horse sanctuary. A Broadway show he would have hated. A road trip, and a lot of quiet dinners at home. What she found was that their relationship hadn't ended so much as changed shape, and that it had room for what they'd never managed while he was alive: questions she carried, a life-altering diagnosis, and the things handed down a family line long before anyone chooses them. Part reading, part conversation, this talk traces how a childhood tradition became an ongoing practice of staying connected — and what a researcher does when the evidence starts arriving in the form of receipts and trail markers. Take what resonates, leave the rest. There will be time for questions. Corey McAuliffe, PhD, grew up in Lake Oswego and now lives in Vancouver, BC, where she teaches at the University of British Columbia and works in mental health, disability, and wellbeing. Her debut memoir, 23 Dates with My Dead Dad, began after her father died in January 2019, when she reinstated the monthly dates they'd had when she was a child. She writes about grief as a relationship, not a stage — holding both the rigorous and the ethereal without asking either to give way. This program is supported by the Friends of the Lake Oswego Public Library. Participation is free, and no registration is required. Please note, seating is limited due to the size of the space. Seats will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. A livestream will be available.

Ken Yarnell

In March of 1977, Milwaukie had our own "madness" experience.

With no warning at all, Milwaukie’s HS Boys Basketball team won two Play-In games to qualify for the AAA State Tournament. The basketball play was earnest, but not extraordinary. The FAN support from the school and the community was amazing and fueled the dark horse ride.

We invite any and all who wish to revive the energy of high school basketball showdowns to a special pop-up event!

On Tuesday, November 10, The Riff on Main Street welcomes Ken Yarnell, a key member of the Medford Black Tornado team that derailed Milwaukie’s trip at the ball in the round of eight.

Ken recently published Coaching Against Champions, which draws from his long, highly respected career as a coach. He’ll tip things off by sharing a handful of stories that recapture the magic every community knows as Oregon HS Basketball.

Dreamfruit: The Story & Moons of 2026

There has never been a more beautiful moment to change how we think about ourselves and the world. Join us for work with Radical Belonging and the Dreamfruit Almanac, a guided path toward reconnection with the consciousness in nature.

*How can re-aligning ourselves with Lunar Time bring greater ease and well-being?

*What does the Generative Imagination have to do with building a better future?

*When did you stop thinking about the world as alive, and how can Animism re-enchant your life?

The Dreamfruit almanac is a moon-based journal and planner with a special collection of monthly musings for 2026, designed to inspire us toward a regenerative future. With each month of the year ahead, you're invited into a collective dreamscape that lights the inner & outer path toward greater alignment with lunar energies. Learn about the world of Dreamfruit and how this unique tool can re-awaken your vital connection with all life.

Bring your art journal. Come ready to write, imagine, and to enter a better dream for yourself and the world. 🌈🍄🌱👀
