Mdou Moctar

A Tuareg singer/songwriter and guitarist who is known for his innovative and intense playing style, Mdou Moctar rose from a small village in Niger to earn viral success among West Africa's cell phone-trading network. An appearance on an American compilation in 2010 led to international recognition and further exploratory releases on the Sahel Sounds label. After starring in a Tuareg-language homage to Purple Rain, Moctar's sound continued to evolve as he pushed his musical boundaries as a multi-instrumentalist on 2017's Sousoume Tamachek. Subsequent albums like Ilana: The Creator (2019) and Afrique Victime (2021) found him infusing his African influences with wild electric psychedelia and full-blast rock and roll to widespread acclaim. 2024's scintillating Funeral for Justice saw Moctar take a stronger political stance on the injustices faced by Niger and the Tuareg people. A reimagined, all-acoustic version of the album was released in early 2025 as Tears of Injustice.

Big Star Quintet

Mississippi Studios & Bar Bar3939 North Mississippi Avenue

After many years celebrating the music of Big Star via the collective known as Big Star’s Third, Jody Stephens (the last surviving member of the original Big Star lineup) had an idea.

“I truly loved touring the world and performing Big Star’s Third with a core group, a variety of special guests, and a chamber orchestra playing the beautiful orchestrations created by Carl Marsh and Chris Stamey. But when the idea of celebrating the 50th anniversary of #1 Record came up, it was time to pare the production down to a five-piece rock band. So I called a few close and like-spirited musical friends.”

Enter some of the legendary group’s biggest fans, who have long been associated with Big Star and related projects. The band now includes Mike Mills (R.E.M.), Jon Auer (The Posies), Pat Sansone (Wilco), Chris Stamey (The dB's) and Stephens. Dubbing themselves the Big Star Quintet, it’s a lineup that is both personal and close in spirit to #1 Record and Radio City.

Emily Scott Robinson

Mississippi Studios & Bar Bar3939 North Mississippi Avenue

Colorado songwriter Emily Scott Robinson beckons to those who are lost, lonely, or learning the hard way with American Siren, her first album for Oh Boy Records. With hints of bluegrass, country, and folk, the eloquent collection shares her gift for storytelling through her pristine soprano and the perspective of her unconventional path into music.

“I think that the thread running through the album is those things that call to us, and how we can't resist that call,” she says. “It’s about the siren songs that come up through our lives.”

Though not fully autobiographical, American Siren gracefully blends imagined characters with the meaningful people she’s encountered on her journey. Showcasing her ability as a storyteller, “If Trouble Comes a Lookin’” invents a scene where a vulnerable priest and an unhappy wife meet in an Arkansas hotel bar. “Hometown Hero” is an emotional tribute to her cousin, a veteran lost to suicide. “Lost Woman’s Prayer” stems from the words of a sage friend she met while traveling abroad, while “Every Day in Faith” is a personal testament to seeing things through.

Pedro the Lion

For thirty years, David Bazan has been writing about what it means to believe in something—and what it means when those beliefs fray. When Pedro the Lion released It's Hard to Find a Friend in 1998, Bazan was already a keen observer of moral and existential conflict, capturing minor human disappointments with devastating attention. By the time Control came out, his writing had sharpened, slicing through suburban politeness and the American dream with pinpoint precision. For over a decade, he built Pedro the Lion into one of indie rock's most quietly radical projects, chronicling doubt, faith, guilt, and the messy pursuit of grace in a way that felt both deeply personal and universally resonant.

Then, in 2006, he retired the Pedro the Lion moniker, as if setting down an old burden. Bazan kept writing, releasing the synth project Headphones and five solo albums that were blunt and revelatory in their own right, but the decision to retire the name felt definitive. Until, suddenly, it wasn't. In 2017, after being dormant for more than a decade, Pedro the Lion was back. The deeply autobiographical albums that followed, Phoenix, Havasu and Santa Cruz, marked a return to the places that shaped him, literally and metaphorically, tracing the lines of the past to understand the shape of the present.

Now, on the occasion of Pedro the Lion's 30th anniversary, Bazan is doing what he does best: stepping onto a stage with long-time musical collaborator, Erik Walters, on guitar and backing vocals, along with recent addition to the band, Andrew Rudd, on drums, and making these songs feel brand new again. The anniversary shows are less about commemoration than they are continuation, a chance to revisit their 30-year catalog in a way that is still active, still evolving.

Vansire's dreamy indie pop balances the hooky and the hypnotic. The Minnesota duo launched the project in 2015 and delivered their first album, Reflections and Reveries, in 2016. While that album was steeped in reverb, shimmery synths, and bouncy, Smiths-era guitar rhythms, their third LP, 2022's 19-track The Modern Western World, reflected a peaceful shift toward more lyrics-forward songcraft and soothing, familiarly echoey atmospheres. It featured several collaborations, and they followed it with singles including 2024's "Years Roll By" (with MUNYA and Jordann) and the next year's "Means So Much" (with Orchid Mantis).

The Cactus Blossoms

At its best, harmony duo singing can transform simple math into a magic trick. One plus one, instead of equaling two, suddenly yields an unexpected third thing. An upper-case ONE. A universal hum. A deep vibration that encompasses two different points of view. On their latest release, Every Time I Think About You, brothers Jack Torrey and Page Burkum, aka The Cactus Blossoms, once again prove themselves to be among the most adept – and distinctive – modern practitioners of that magic. But like any great magician, The Cactus Blossoms can’t — or won’t — fully explain the illusion they create.

There’s all kinds of magic happening on Every Time I Think About You, a record that sounds more like a band than any other in the Cactus Blossoms discography, thanks to contributions from Jeremy Hanson (drums), Jacob Hanson (guitar) and Phillip Hicks (bass). “There She Goes” casts its romantic regret against a danceable bop beat, and the title track is a heart-wrencher about loss and letting go.

You might walk into a HAZL show carrying something heavy, and realize that somehow, by the end, an entire room is holding it with you. There’s something tender and unguarded in the way HAZL crafts songs, like she’s speaking to the part of you that you don’t show to strangers. The part that might feel like too much and not enough. Beyond the memorable riffs, it seems like they’re stretching sonic roots deeper in every direction on Signals, with studio help from Oakland’s Ian and Jay Pellicci (Deerhoof, Tune-Yards).

Googling, you find recent features in NME, Rolling Stone, No Depression and Consequence of Sound and appearances at festivals like Austin City Limits, Red Wing Roots, SXSW, Old Settlers and Beachlife Ranch. They’ve toured with The Dead South, Larkin Poe, Shakey Graves, Trampled by Turtles, The Brothers Comatose, and John Craigie. James Ivy

James Ivy is the project of the New Jersey-born, New York-based singer-songwriter and producer James Butler. His debut album, The Seams — simultaneously an ode to and critique of stagnancy — sees Butler muddle through the doldrums of life, stripped of ego or dogma. Acting as a marked moment of pause and resistance, the project works to combat his early reliance on the economy of immediate artistic satisfaction.

Entering the music scene in the age of digital immediacy in 2015 via Soundcloud, Butler became accustomed to allowing his music to reach audiences nearly as soon as they had formed. This quick-footed approach to creation continued even after Butler’s project began to explore singer-songwriter territory. The creation of his early EPs, Good Grief (2021) and Everything Perfect (2023) were Butler’s initial steps toward finding his place in music and piecing together his artistic identity. When making these projects, Butler passed his sonic output through a digital filter; the drums were sampled and layered on top of each other, the guitar was played into an audio interface and brought to life through amp simulation rather than recording analog, and Butler’s voice was heavily processed and tuned, acting almost as a synth amongst the rest of the maximalist production.

In New York City on his thirteenth birthday, planes fell from the sky and crashed into the World Trade Center. This had nothing to do with Alex Cameron. He wasn’t there. He was in Australia. By the time the planes hit, it wasn’t even 9/11 anymore. It was 9/12.

This has been the secret rhythm of his art. One day ahead of a most terrible, but inevitable truth.

Alex Cameron’s new album is called “Late to Set.” “Late to Set” was born of 9 forgotten long form screenplays written between the year 2022 and 2025. Rejected by the studios, lost to the LA wildfires, the charred remains fragmented and saved in songs of deep confusion and regret.

“Late to Set” is Al’s fifth album. Production credits include Mark Perkins, Zach Dawes and Maxim Ludwig among others.

WHITMER THOMAS

A Los Angeles-based comedian, avid skateboarder, filmmaker, and actor, Whitmer Thomas added rocker to his credentials in 2020 with the release of the soundtrack to his HBO musical/comedy one-man show, The Golden One. It was followed by a stand-alone music EP, the Jay Som-produced Can't Believe You're Happy Here, in 2022.

A native of Gulf Shores, Alabama, Thomas first found success in 2014 with Stone Quackers, a surreal FX adult animated television series. Power Violence, a popular monthly show Whitmer hosted with friends, helped to secure his status in the upper echelons of the Los Angeles independent comedy scene, as did his numerous short films like Blue Line and Fast and Loose, and appearances on The Walking Dead and Glow. In 2020, Whitmer released his one-man show, The Golden One, on HBO. Featuring pop-punk songs composed and performed by Whitmer (a longtime fan of blink-182), which covered everything from millennial anxiety and sex to abandonment and addiction, the special spawned the companion LP Songs from the Golden One. Between guest spots on series like I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson and Search Party, he followed it up with a music EP titled Can't Believe You're Happy Here in 2022, also on the Hardly Art label. Led by the sincere acoustic track "Don't Have a Cow," the EP was produced by Melina Duterte, better known as Jay Som.co

Robert Ellis

Recorded live to tape in just two days, Robert Ellis’s exquisite new album, Yesterday’s News, is as stripped-down as it gets, with the celebrated songwriter and producer’s delicate, reedy tenor accompanied only by nylon string guitar, upright bass, and the occasional piece of handheld percussion. The arrangements are harmonically sophisticated here, drawing on the open tunings and intricate fingerpicking of English songwriters like Nick Drake or Richard Thompson, and Ellis’s performances are similarly subtle and nuanced, tapping into the bittersweet longing of Chet Baker and the playful poignancy of Bill Evans and Jim Hall.

Pretty Sick

New York City's Pretty Sick emerged in the late 2010s with a raw and gritty sound rooted in 1990s alt-rock and grunge. Led by vocalist and bassist Sabrina Fuentes, the band issued a pair of EPs before unleashing their fiery, full-length debut, Makes Me Sick Makes Me Smile, in 2022. They returned in 2024 with the Streetwise EP.

Pretty Sick was founded in 2014 by Manhattanite musician and model Sabrina Fuentes, who was just 13 at the time. Coalescing around an early lineup that included friends Ella Moore and Eva Kaufman, the band honed their chops in the Lower East Side D.I.Y. venues and built a loyal following in the process. With Fuentes splitting her time between modeling and music, Pretty Sick became a revolving door for musicians. A lineup consisting of Fuentes, ex-Virgins guitarist Wade Oates, and Onyx Collection drummer Austin Williamson helped push the group's indie rock sound into a grungier style reminiscent of bands like Hole and Pixies. Pretty Sick's live shows and videos became more theatrical, with blood and hospital imagery featuring prominently, and Fuentes' lyrics adopting a darker and more dystopian tone.
