The Hands of Orlac
Based on the novel by Maurice Renard, this is the tale of Orlac (Conrad Veidt), a famous concert pianist, who is severely injured in a train wreck that fractures his skull and mutilates his hands. The supervising surgeon, however, decides to amputate Orlac’s ruined hands and replace them with the hands of a recently executed prisoner who was serving time for murder. Once the pianist recovers and realizes that his hands are those of a killer, he becomes too distraught to resume his career and begins to question his sanity. Who is that strange man who is shadowing him? Why do his hands seem to have a life of their own?

THE THREE FROM THE GAS STATION (1930) (Church of Film)
Three friends return from a three month sojourn to find that an economic downturn has robbed them all of their fortunes. Undaunted, the three of them decide to open a gas station and try their hand at manual labor. When a beautiful woman appears at the station, the three of them eagerly vie for her attention, but only one of them can win her heart. THE THREE FROM THE GAS STATION was one of the best films produced by the legendary film duo of Willy Fritsch and Lilian Harvey. Brimming with charm, humor, and those familiar Weimar tropes of gender play and role reversal, it stands as a wondrous monument to an irreverent culture in the midst of catastrophic change.
The Oyster Princess
Made in Germany by legendary director Ernst Lubitsch, this 1919 film follows an oyster tycoon who decides to find a prince to marry his daughter, but things don’t go quite as planned. Visually inventive, sexually playful, and speeding at a manic pace, THE OYSTER PRINCESS represents the best of the madcap comedies made by Lubitsch prior to his arrival in Hollywood.

Asphalt
Gustav Frahlich, best known as the young protagonist of METROPOLIS, stars as Holk, a strait-laced traffic cop who has the simple task of escorting a diamond thief to the police station. However, the thief is the exotic and beautiful Else (played by Betty Amann), which makes the task far from simple. The stage is thus set for a scandalous turn of events, and the drama is made all the more exciting thanks to the dynamic photography of Ganther Rittau (THE BLUE ANGEL) and the equally impressive sets of Erich Kettelhut (METROPOLIS).
