The Hands of Orlac
Based on the novel by Maurice Renard, this is the tale of Orlac (Conrad Veidt), a famous concert pianist, who is severely injured in a train wreck that fractures his skull and mutilates his hands. The supervising surgeon, however, decides to amputate Orlacâs ruined hands and replace them with the hands of a recently executed prisoner who was serving time for murder. Once the pianist recovers and realizes that his hands are those of a killer, he becomes too distraught to resume his career and begins to question his sanity. Who is that strange man who is shadowing him? Why do his hands seem to have a life of their own? Silents on 16mm: Camera Magic
One of the very first filmmakers, Georges MĂ©liĂšs, started out as a stage magician. His hugely influential style, filled with special effects and fantastical narratives, has a clear magic show sensibility. From MĂ©liĂšs on, much of early cinema was pure showmanship. Audiences were drawn in by anything flashy, shocking, and unfamiliar. This program celebrates that spirit of breathless innovation with a selection of films selected from the Nyback Archive, including voyages to other worlds, surrealist visions, and stop-motion taxidermy, all on 16mm with accompanying musical curation by Ross Tidwell. This is a companion piece to The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari on Friday, Nov. 6âenjoy both nights for only $15!
