Show & Tell Design Lecture Series presents Brian Yonki

Show & Tell welcomes Brian Yonki, Sign Painter at Well Done Signs

Bryan Yonki is an artist, sign painter, and instructor currently based in Portland, Oregon. His love for hand-painted signs began during his childhood in Santiago, Chile, where he grew up admiring the art adorning public transportation buses and witnessed the decline of this traditional craft with the rise of vinyl. Bryan moved to Los Angeles, California, in 2014, where he taught himself the art of sign painting and eventually established his own sign studio called "Well Done Signs" in 2016, and is now a brick-and-mortar storefront in NE Portland. Embodying the motto "Always hand painted," he has dedicated himself to enhancing the urban landscapes of L.A. and Portland by creating numerous hand-painted signs and murals adorning storefronts throughout the city. Bryan actively shares his knowledge and passion for the trade through workshops, encouraging newcomers to contribute to the preservation of this traditional craft. He frequently travels and offers these workshops in various cities across the West Coast.

'Who can be a Japanese Emperor?: Japan's Insistence on Male-Line Succession' A Presentation by Prof. Thomas Naruse, Kokushikan University

'Who can be a Japanese Emperor?: Japan's Insistence on Male-Line Succession'
A Presentation by Prof. Thomas Naruse, Kokushikan University
Hosted by the Center for Japanese Studies

The Japanese imperial system has been facing a declining number of imperial family members. Under the current system, only male members of imperial family are eligible for succession. However, at present, there is only one male member under the age of 50. While there are 5 female members under 50 years old, since current legislation stipulates that female members leave the imperial family upon their marriage, there are concerns about the shrinking number of imperial family members.

Regarding this situation, the Japanese Diet and government are considering countermeasures. While there is strong public support for allowing a female emperor, the Diet and government continue to insist on succession through the male-line. As of June 2026, the government is drafting amendments for Imperial House Law to deal with the situation, but the policy of maintaining male-line succession remains unchanged.

In this lecture, Prof. Naruse will examine why the Japanese Diet and government continue to adhere to male-line succession and what lies behind this policy. Beginning with the history of the emperor system and the rules governing imperial succession, he will discuss the current challenges facing the imperial system and the measures proposed to address them, how and why the Japanese Diet and government insist on male-line so strongly.

Ancient Greek Wine Vessels and their Medieval Afterlives

Simon Fraser University's Evan Freeman presents his research on the ancient Greek krater, a vessel for mixing wine and water, and its continued representation across Christian, Jewish, and Islamic contexts in late antiquity and the Middle Ages. Focusing on the art and ritual of the Byzantine Empire, Freeman shows how the form, function, and symbolic significance of the krater were adapted to serve new religious and political purposes even as the memory of its original ancient name and historical function endured.

Now in its third year, the Cinematic Sound Showcase is a collaboration between the School of Film and the Sonic Arts & Music Production (SAMP) Department, spearheaded by faculty members Shelley Davis and Caroline Miller.

This intensive program simulates real-world industry workflows: narrative short films produced in Shelley’s Narrative Production 2 class are handed off to Caroline’s SAMP students, who complete full sound editing, sound design, original music composition, mixing, and mastering within a demanding 10-week deadline. The culmination of this collaboration is a high-profile, two-hour event at the historic Hollywood Theatre featuring student film screenings and a moderated Q&A with the storytellers from both departments. After two consecutive years of sold-out screenings at PSU, the showcase is moving to a premiere venue to support emerging Pacific Northwest creative talent and connect PSU FILM and SAMP with the broader arts community. Please join us for an evening of curated talent, storytelling, and celebration.

The Cinematic Showcase is sponsored by SakeOne.

How an Ottoman Caftan Became a Liturgical Robe: Recycling Precious Textiles in a Lutheran Parish Church in Transylvania

Join us as Evelin Wetter, curator at Abegg-Stiftung (Riggisberg, Switzerland) and honorary professor at Leipzig University, Germany, presents "How an Ottoman Caftan Became a Liturgical Robe: Recycling Precious Textiles in a Lutheran Parish Church in Transylvania."

Lutheran churches in present-day Romania, especially the Black Church in Braşov, preserve a surprisingly rich heritage of magnificent velvets. They date from the period before the Reformation and attest to Transylvania’s extensive trade relations in the late Middle Ages and early modern period. Transformed into liturgical vestments that were used until the late 19th century, they serve as instructive examples of strategies for recycling, careful preservation, and the programmatic reuse of these precious textiles throughout different eras.

Kitchens and Community in Ancient and Modern Türkiye

Royal Holloway's Associate Professor Erica Rowan, a leading scholar on ancient foodways, will present her research on the role of the kitchen, both ancient and modern, in the formation and maintenance of community in Western Türkiye. Using the Lydian kitchens at Sardis as a case study, she will explore the way kitchens have traditionally been used, especially by women, to form important social bonds and the way modern urban architecture has disrupted these vital processes, leading to the creation of alternative community spaces.
