Shostakovich & Rachmaninoff
Strife and battle erupt in Shostakovich’s musical portrayal of the precursor to the Russian Revolution in his Symphony No. 11, “The Year 1905”. Superstar pianist Marc-André Hamelin joins the Symphony in Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, an exhilarating joyride of keyboard pyrotechnics, melodic passion, and humor. Plus, hear South Korean composer Donghoon Shin’s Kafka’s Dream, inspired by a colorfully surreal story by Jorge Luis Borges.
Romance & Devotion with the Oregon Symphony
Immerse yourself in a concert fueled by lovers and romance for Valentine’s Day, brought to us by Berlioz via his Overture to Béatrice et Bénédict and Tchaikovsky in his lavish Romeo and Juliet Overture-Fantasy. Two equally celebrated lovers, Pelléas et Mélisande, appear in the suite from Fauré’s exquisite incidental music. For a break from all that amour, the program features Dvořák’s captivating Violin Concerto with soloist Karen Gomyo.
Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 3
Rachmaninoff lived in America in his later years, and it was here that he wrote his Symphony No. 3. Filled with his trademark Romantic melodies, yet enhanced with modernist touches, the innovative Third remains a favorite among audiences. Bernstein’s violin concerto Serenade (after Plato’s Symposium) is one of his most lyrical and appealing works, while Sophia Jani’s I Wish You Daisies and Roses captures her joy after the birth of her first child.
