Hung Dance

Choreographer Lai Hung-Chung makes dances of striking beauty and intention. “Birdy,” his captivating signature work for Hung Dance, moves between suspense and explosive energy, between the weight of tradition and the pull toward something new. Hung Dance blends traditional Chinese arts, including tai chi, Peking Opera, and classical Chinese music, with contemporary dance technique and driving electronic music, creating work that is poetic and rhythmic at once. What audiences see on stage is a world in constant transformation, where bodies bend and resist, images linger, and the tension between holding on and letting go becomes the dance itself.

Side B: Jimetta Rose performing MettaSun

Inspired by the interplanetary mythologies of Sun Ra, MettaSun reimagines a selection of the cosmic jazz pioneer’s most iconic recordings through Jimetta’s unique lens – a powerful expression of the female imaginary and a positive vision of radical hope and Black joy amid the chaos of contemporary America.

MettaSun is Jimetta Rose’s solo opus. Embracing Sun Ra’s sonic world-building and paying homage to Arkestra vocalist June Tyson, Jimetta adds her powerful female voice to the Afrofuturist tradition, stitching together a jazz- and gospel-tinted narrative of resistance and escape. Through interpretations of “Somebody Else’s Idea,” “Sleeping Beauty,” “I’ll Wait for You,” “Springtime Again” and “Nuclear War,” a new myth emerges – one in which music opens a portal to a world where love, peace, joy and harmony prevail.

Special guests The Cosmic Tones Research Trio join this performance for a night of musical exploration, energy and joyful connection.

This concert is Side B of Save the LP Volume 3 – a full day designed like a record with two distinct sides.

Before the performance, experience Side A: the Save the LP Record Show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., featuring more than 55 record vendors and a community of collectors, selectors, families and music lovers. Side A requires separate admission.

When the Record Show ends, the record flips over to Side B and Jimetta Rose presents MettaSun takes the stage.

This year’s LP is dedicated to KMHD and to honoring Jazz Without Boundaries.

This program is made possible through generous community support from the Music Time Foundation, Jazz Imagination, KMHD Jazz Radio—and from you.

Tomáseen Foley’s A Celtic Christmas

Tomáseen Foley’s “A Celtic Christmas” recreates the joy and innocence of a night before Christmas in a remote farmhouse in the parish of Teampall an Ghleanntáin in the west of Ireland, when neighboring families gather around the fire. Together, they raise the rafters with the haunting melodies of traditional Irish Christmas carols, knock sparks off the flagstone floor with traditional dances, and fill the night with the laughter of their stories. It’s an intimate, old-world celebration of music, dance, and storytelling — a Christmas Eve like the ones Foley remembers from his own childhood in rural Ireland.

Cedric Watson Creole Christmas

Cedric Watson & Bijou Creole resurrect the ancient sounds of the French and Spanish contra dance and bourré alongside the spiritual rhythms of the Congo tribes of West Africa, who were sold as slaves in the Carribean and Louisiana by the French and Spanish.

With an apparently bottomless repertoire of songs at his fingertips, Cedric plays everything from forgotten Creole melodies and obscure Dennis McGee reels to more modern Cajun and Zydeco songs, even occasionally throwing in a bluegrass fiddle tune or an old string band number. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he is also a prolific songwriter, writing almost all of his songs on his double row Hohner accordion. Cedric’s songs channel his diverse ancestry (African, French, Native American and Spanish) to create his own brand of sounds.

Conquest Requiem

In collaboration with Orchestra Nova Northwest, Choral Arts Ensemble of Portland, and guest soloists, Resonance brings together more than 100 singers and instrumentalists for Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Gabriela Lena Frank’s Conquest Requiem, a sweeping work that invites us to confront the stories we think we know. Through the figure of Malinche—an Indigenous interpreter whose role in the Spanish conquest of Mexico has been understood in profoundly different ways—the work explores power, survival, identity, and the complexity of historical memory. Rather than offering a single answer, Conquest Requiem asks us to sit with the contradictions and perspectives that shape how history is remembered. The concert also features the world premiere of a new work for orchestra and choir by Portland-based Venezuelan composer Giancarlo Castro D’Addona, honoring the life of Portland peace activist Del Greenfield and her commitment to peace and justice. Together, these works connect histories across time and place, inviting audiences to consider whose stories are remembered, whose voices are heard, and what we might discover when we listen from more than one perspective.

Todo Cambia: Featuring Vijay Gupta & La Marisoul

Created through a years-long collaboration between visionary violinist and author Vijay Gupta, Street Symphony, Los Angeles-based Mexican folk musicians Son California, and Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, and actress La Marisoul, this evening brings together selections from Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons and Mexico’s traditional son jarocho music—including pieces such as La Caña and La Carretera—in newly created orchestrations. Rather than presenting these two classical music traditions side by side, the program interweaves them, allowing them to illuminate each other in real time to celebrate both the natural world and our human experience within it.

This is a co-production between Patricia Reser Center for the Arts & Chamber Music Northwest.

“In Vivaldi’s work, the violin traces the physical realities of heat, cold, wind, and storm, alongside scenes of labor, celebration, and rest drawn from everyday life. In son jarocho, songs like La Caña carry histories of land, labor, and endurance, shaped through generations of communal music-making. Both traditions engage directly with the natural world and with the human experience within it.

By bringing these forms together, the program does not seek contrast but recognition. The repetition and variation of son jarocho, and the cyclical structures embedded in Vivaldi’s music, reveal a shared sense of time as something lived—through work, through environment, and through one another.

This performance invites audiences to hear these connections as they unfold, not as an abstract idea, but as a lived encounter with sound, place, and the forces that shape both.”

— Vijay Gupta

“[Vijay Gupta is a] visionary violinist…one of the most radical thinkers in the unradical world of American classical music.”

— The New Yorker

“The powerful voice of lead singer La Marisoul ties the varied threads together in a way that should satisfy longtime fans and bring more on board.”

Skeleton Canoe

Skeleton Canoe follows the story of young Nawbin, an Anishinaabe youth searching for where they fit in. After mistakenly breaking their family’s canoe paddle in a fit of emotions, they flee their home and set out on a rite of passage journey that will take them along the water. Along the way they encounter unexpected friends, weather storms, and discover a calling to care for the earth in this time of climate crisis. Skeleton Canoe is more than a performance, it’s a community gathering.

One morning in an Anishinaabe town not too far away from here, Nawbin sees an eagle drop a feather while they are out digging a pit to prepare for the ricing. They rush back to tell their family, but all are distracted with preparations and ignore Nawbin. In the storm of their emotions, the family’s sacred ancestor oar is broken. Scared and embarrassed, Nawbin runs through the night landing in a birch forest far from home. By the riverbed they encounter Jiimaan, the bent-wood frame with pieces of birchbark clinging to the sides. Jiimaan is alive and invites Nawbin to journey with them down the river.

On their jouney down the rvier, Nawbin and Jiiman meets many friends. They receive knowledge in answer to their questions, each lesson connected to an Anishinaabe teaching. In the end, Nawbin returns home with a greater understanding of who they are, where they come from, where they are going, and their purpose.

Red Baraat

Red Baraat has toured the globe the past 16 years with stops at Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, Bumbershoot, New Orleans Jazz Fest, Peter Gabriel’s WOMAD festivals (Australia, New Zealand, Spain, UK), Dubai World Expo 2021, just to name a few. Along the way they sold out rooms as diverse as the Luxembourg Philharmonic and the New York City’s legendary rock club Bowery Ballroom, and performed at the request of The White House (Obama), TED, London Olympic Games, David Byrne, Padma Lakshmi and recent NYC Mayor-elect, Zohran Mamdani. Red Baraat have released 7 albums with numerous accolades from major media outlets and ranked in top 10 lists on Billboard, Apple Music and World Music Charts Europe.

The band’s debut release, Chaal Baby (2010) set the band on a whirlwind USA tour as well as performances at Montreal Jazz Festival, Molde International Jazz Festival and opening for Gil-Scot Heron and Sharon Jones at the Pori Jazz Festival. They caught the ears of international audiences and in 2012, the band debuted in the UK with performances at Bestival, Sfinks Festival, The Barbican and closing ceremony for the Paralympics at Trafalgar Square. The Guardian (UK) said the band’s music brought a “punk spirit.” Shortly thereafter, Red Baraat was invited to perform at the prestigious WOMEX showcase in Thessaloniki, Greece.

Then the release of Red Baraat’s 2nd album in 2013, Shruggy Ji, debuted at #1 on the Billboard World Music charts and propelled the band on a nonstop world tour that only halted in 2020 as a result of the pandemic. There are too many performances to recount, but they clock in at over 800 clubs and festivals worldwide. One special moment of note was in 2015 at Peter Gabriel’s WOMAD festival in UK. The band magically stopped a 2-day continuous downpour, parted the clouds and brought the sun out at as thousands danced in their galoshes.
