Dessa is a singer, rapper, and writer who fell in love with language as a toddlerâand just never got over it. Now, she works in fields that traffic in words: sheâs recorded rap bangers as part of the fiercely independent Doomtree collective, released a live album with the Grammy-winning Minnesota Orchestra; contributed to The New York Times and National Geographic Traveler; delivered a TED Talk on the intersection of romance and neuroscience thatâs notched more than 4 million views; hosted 2 seasons of behavioral science podcast Deeply Human (BBC/American Public Media); and published a memoir recounting most of the above called My Own Devices (Penguin Random House).
Mac Barnett, the 2025â2026 National Ambassador for Young Peopleâs Literature, is a New York Times bestselling author of stories for children. Macâs books have won many prizes, including two Caldecott Honors, three New York Times/New York Public Library Best Illustrated Childrenâs Book Awards, three E. B. White Read Aloud Awards and the Boston GlobeâHorn Book Award, as well as several international prizes. He lives in Oakland, California. His latest book, illustrated by X. Fang, is Tom Nancy: The Sheep Who Swapped Brains with a Boy. From two of the most exciting picture book makers today comes a hilarious trickster tale and Freaky Friday switcheroo story: a sneaky, cheeky sheep named Tom Nancy has a brain swap proposal for an innocent farm boy named Felix that will change both of their lives forever. Laugh-out-loud, subversive, and totally unexpected.
Ed Park is the author of the novels Personal Days and Same Bed Different Dreams. He is a founding editor of The Believer, and has worked in newspapers, book publishing, and academia. His writing appears in The New Yorker, The New York Review of Books, Harperâs Magazine, The Atlantic, and elsewhere. Profound, wily, and beautifully wrought, his new book Three Tenses: A Transmission from the Nineties is a meeting of memory and myth, confession and obfuscation, coalescing to offer a singular picture of creativity in action.
The princess of Portland comedy, best known for her breakout performance on the popular Netflix special Hannah Gadsbyâs Gender Agenda, Mx. Dahlia Belle has been compared to a Swiss Army knifeâdifferent tools to extract sharpness, softness, vulnerability, hope, and wicked wit. Sheâs been declared one of â11 Trans Comedians⌠Funnier Than Dave Chappelleâ by Out Magazine, repeatedly featured on NPR, and has written for Cosmopolitan Magazine, The Guardian, The Stranger, and Portland Mercury. Her live performances have included NW Black Comedy Festival, Upper Left Comedy Festival, SF Sketchfest, and an awkward conversation with John Waters and Piers Morgan. In the upcoming live taping of her comedy special Affirmed at Polaris Hall on November 22nd, Mx. Dahlia Belle delivers 60 new minutes of stand-up to celebrate and affirm being human in the modern world through a combination of the wholesome and mundane, anecdotes about house cats, liscivious foibles of the LGBT community, and an unapologetic account of her personal journey with gender-affirming care, all delivered with her trademark free form wit.

From the day sheâs born, a child feels the love and power that come with being part of something bigger. Sheâs a new spring leaf, alive and growing, as strong as the ancient cedars and as radiant as the glittering night sky. She is one with the amazing forces of nature that surround and nurture her, and that she nurtures in return.

Through their eyes, we see how Black Americans have relied on one another to fight against oppression and the ways in which the strength of their ancestors is always with them.
Sibert Honor winner Traci N. Todd and Caldecott Medalist Vashti Harrison have created an unforgettable exploration of culture and history that records the important survival story Black children carry and celebrates their hope for a radiant future.
About Bingâs Cherries:
A modern American tall tale woven by a girl and her father about Ah Bing, the Chinese immigrant behind the Pacific Northwestâs most delicious cherries.
Youâve heard of a Bing cherry, but did you know the story of the Chinese American immigrant for whom the dark, luscious cherry is named?
Long ago, Ah Bing was a father who travelled across the sea from China looking for work. It was in Oregon where he met a man who hired him to work in his orchards, where eventually, Bing cultivated the delicious cherries we know of today.
But what was it that made this man and the cherries he made so special?âŻa young girl wonders as she sits together with her father, enjoying cherries from their backyard. Weaving together cultural memory, historical fact, and her own imagination, the young girl imagines a narrative of Ah Bing that is as larger than life and as sweet as his namesake.
With touching text and lush illustrations, Livia Blackburne and Julia Kuo forge an unforgettable Chinese American folktale that has largely been untold. The backmatter includes a letter from the author and illustrator, as well as a recipe!
About Mexikid Dreams:
In this extraordinary graphic memoir companion to Newbery Honor winner Mexikid, hilarious family hijinks, immigration patrols, and musical daydreams shape a year of growth and change for a Mexican-American boy and his family.
Pedro MartĂn is sick of strawberries. Since he was seven, heâs spent every weekend and summer picking berries with his family under the hot sun. Sometimes itâs not so badâPedroâs an ace at âstrawberry warsâ with his siblings, and when a good song comes on the radio, the fields can come alive with music. But mostly, Pedro wishes he could just stay home watching Saturday cartoons, head to the beach like other kids, and not worry about immigration patrols. When his older brother gets a job away from the farm, freedom suddenly seems within armâs reach: Pedro just has to prove to his dad that heâs ready to follow a different path! Maybe he can be a trombone player, or a cartoonistâif thatâs even a real job. But as Pedro learns more about his parentsâ and abuelitoâs past, and the choices they made in order to open up more choices for him, he starts to understand that freedom isnât just about leaving the fieldsâitâs about knowing where you came from and having the courage to draw your own life.

Through fundraising and community support, SVBD keeps the bands and dance teams supplied with the necessary support to keep the program functioning at a competitive level. SVBD assists with instructor fees, show design costs, musical and dance equipment, uniforms, maintenance costs of travel trailers to haul show equipment, and travel costs for the many competitions and events they participate in each year. For all opportunities, SVBD is proud to fund scholarships ensuring that financial need is never a barrier to a studentâs experience.
Thank you in advance for joining us and for supporting our students and band program as they continue to grow and thrive.
Householding: Poetry Reading with Tom Blood, Shannon Baird
Join us for a poetry reading from Householding with Tom Blood, Shannon Baird, and Brian Hebb.
Tom Blood is the author of the sky position which was awarded the Oregon Book Award for Poetry. Published the raccoon, dot dot, the act, if ever then always, exp, and exp3. He also performs as the lead vocalist in the bands rob walmart, Tom Blood and Jordan Dykstra and Dream Center. Tom is Published in journals in NY, SF, Portland, London, Seattle and elsewhere. He believes the only purpose in life is to communicate love.
Shannon Baird is a Portland native, real estate broker, and award-winning designer whose work reflects a longstanding appreciation for architecture, art, and the character of place. With more than 24 years in real estate and as the founder of SBaird Design, she brings a distinctive perspective to the relationship between people, homes, and the stories they hold.
Shannon conceived the idea for this collection of poetry, originally written to accompany actual real estate listings. What began as an unconventional approach to presenting homes evolved into a book celebrating the character, atmosphere, and individuality of the places we inhabit.
Working closely with book designer Fredrik Averin, Shannon guided the creative development and design of the publication. The collection features poems primarily by Tom Blood, with additional contributions from Shannon Baird and Brian Hebb. Charlotte Moore wrote the foreword and afterword, and Rory Sparks produced the foil-stamped covers.
The book reflects an appreciation for the ways poetry can reveal something beyond the physical details of a propertyâoffering a more personal evocative perspective on the meaning of home, a subject of perennial longing.
Brian Hebb is a failed capitalist, former journalist and chronic penman for hire, furnishing other peopleâs ad copy and speeches with his favorite daydreams. For these sins, and others less relevant, he is at work on his first novel, The Last Days of Fake Bears, and a short story collection, Target Audience. He lives with his wife in Portland, Oregon where fleeting glimpses of their dead pets are most persistent.
Pop-up: Anthony Hudson
Anthony Hudson reads from his new collection of performance works Lamp Black: Plays and Other Grievances at Portland Art Museum in the American Art gallery (Level 2, Room 211), paired with Moses Soyer, Girl with a Cigarette.
Followed by book signing at The Shop at PAM.
About Lamp Black:A major collection of performance works by artist and agitator Anthony Hudson.
Lamp Back: Plays and Other Grievances collects nearly a decade of work by Anthony Hudson, a queer Indigenous artist and agitator also known as Portland, Oregonâs premier drag clown, Carla Rossi. Whether fumbling with a lamp in a satirical takedown of land acknowledgments or confronting the history of redface in pop culture, Hudson alternates between Rossiâs cackling âghost of white privilegeâ and more earnest, vulnerable confessionals as himselfâall with a deep commitment to bitter humor and brutal honesty. In these performance works, a mixed-race Native boy plays a pilgrim in his kindergarten Thanksgiving pageant. A young artist recounts the racism in their favorite musical and the larger American theater system. A drag queen storytime goes disastrously wrong and calls for an exorcism with a plunger. Kate Bredesonâs unflinching introduction speaks to Hudsonâs work through a cultural and historical lens and illuminates the importance of his project to filet the American Empire.

Book Launch: Junebug by Paul Maziar
Join us for a reading and celebration of Paul Maziarâs Junebug. The evening with feature musical guests Kelli Schaefer and Drew Grow.
When asked for eight words to describe Junebug, Maziar channeled Agent Cooper: âEveryday, once a day, give yourself a present.â But did he mean the present? Either way, Junebug is a gift.
Junebug situates Paul Maziarâs latest acts of listening and attending, transmission and transcription. Heâs built a modular space suggestive of both the theatre and the gallery, performance and (inter)play. The aphoristic title sequence hones sharp accessibilities â we find words available to us, for our limbs and limbics to hold, hurrumph, to slap our knees and share. A mysterious dramatis personae pervades Junebugâs expanse across the mental maps Maziar graphs as he organizes streets of words and questions what their design might reference. We encounter, among others, Toulouse-Lautrec, Agnes Martin, Eva Hesse, Jack Whitten, Colette, Robert Walser. Who are all these characters in Maziarâs parade? Maybe thereâs some insight in the final serial sequence, âHives,â which states that âThe real thing is inside of what everything appears as.â The real in Junebug asks us to admire the distance between the surface and the subject. We already have the right tools.
Advance praise for Junebug:Charles North: From short poems to prose poems to the wonderful fragments collected in its title poem, Paul Maziarâs writing revels in imaginative discontinuity. Junebug is smart, witty, surprisingâand inspiringâthroughout.
Merrill Gilfillan: These works step up in the name of Poetry and its heartwood, its ever-salvational âWhatâs on the river today?â
Tetra Balestri: Maziar manages to resurrect a conversation started sometime in the early to mid-20th century that cuts through the present-day pandemonium with polish and swagger. Junebug is a pair of pants worth trying on.
Simone Kearney: Reading Paul Maziarâs Junebug, I feel the tightrope walkerâs high-wire balance between the forces of levity and gravity, the contexts of interior and exterior, the concocted and the perceived, thought and overheard speech. These poems make me wonder how it is that we move through the world, which is also a moving-through language.
Iâm reminded that language bears a strange mystery. Itâs always received and always being made at the same time; itâs a material we inherit and get to play with. In Maziarâs work, overheard phrases and sayings arrive solidified, brick-like things. The language resembles the fragments of familiar tunes â an echo, or memory of one â appearing as the freshest, strangest thing newly imagined.
I feel the intimacy and elusiveness of unspoken thought in the poems: words not yet uttered, still inside the mind. This makes me feel the dynamics of inside and outside that are part of the human drama. Am I looking at something the poet is looking at, or am I inside his head? Maziar lets us inhabit uncertainty. This is living language just being breathed, catapulted from lips, cemented into freshly-thought speech.
Junebug lets me delight in the way language can tend to trip over itself: âIâd rather stimulate than simulateâ; âa certain vigor (or vinegar?).â Decontextualized, speech is absurd, funny, strangely moving: âIâm not going anywhere until I see a horse.â
What emerges is a tour de force composed of song, slogan, slip of the tongue, reverie, note, advertisement, fragment, nonsense, musing, hiccup, rupture, tidbit, epiphany. âThe only faith he had was in the confusion of his experiences,â Maziar writes, suggesting that one thing we can do amid such confusion is continue to place words onto the page â in relation to ourselves, to others, to images, and to other words. And those words keep coming to meet us: flat, full, flowing, tired, zippy, and ready for more.
Musical guestsKelli Schaefer's latest record, Even Still, could be the soundtrack to a modern gothic, a playlist for a trudge through a muddy forest or the accompaniment to a subconscious mantra. She demonstrates deftness in refusing to confine herself to a single genre. Schaefer excavates her past while planting herself deeper into the avant-garde, offering a fresh take on the age-old singer-songwriter trope, delivering haunting melodies over swirling woodwinds, piano, classical guitar, and upright bass.
The Pacific Northest's beloved troubadour, musician/artist Drew Grow (Slang, Modern Kin, Pastor's Wives) is back with new songs and a new stripped down method. Spotted playing solo shows around Portland this summer, he is out on his own, debuting new music and packing a wall of little guitar amps. It's new digs for the artist. Drew's solo approach, raw and exposed, is even more striking than the bands of his past. His powerful voice still ringing through as ever, magnetic and arching over the solo guitar and twisted old amps. The sound is momentous and vulnerable, seeming to come from a deeper place. What have you brought us?
A $10 ticket supports our musical guests, Kelli Schaefer and Drew Grow.

Music of Resistance: A Tribute to Mikis Theodorakis
Mikis Theodorakis, one of Greece's most treasured and prolific composers, was widely known for film scores, such as the iconic "Zorba the Greek". This concert pays tribute to Theodorakis prolific body of work, including some of his lesser-known pieces and compositions that highlight Theodorakis' role as a symbol of resistance.
Whether your taste runs to folk or classical music, this concert has something for you. The Kombos Collective (including artists from San Francisco, Washington, DC and local Portland artists) will perform a range of Theodorakis' most beloved songs â pieces as historically significant as they are musically beautiful. This includes "Ballad of Mauthausen," set to the poetry of Holocaust survivor Iakovos Kambanellis, and widely regarded as one of the most beautiful songs ever written about the Holocaust. In addition to live music, attendees will learn about the enduring cultural significance of Theodorakis' music.
This program is organized by the Hellenic-American Cultural Center & Museum, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of Greece and Greek Americans in the Pacific Northwest.

Soccer Mommy
Join an intimate evening featuring a pre-show discussion and Q&A with Soccer Mommy and special Guest Interviewer, followed by a local opener and solo performance by Soccer Mommy. This event is hosted by Papertrees Creative, in partnership with Literary Arts and the Portland Book Festival 2026.
Sophie Allison has always written candidly about her life, making Soccer Mommy one of indie rockâs most interesting and beloved artists of the last decade. Allison has used Soccer Mommyâs songs as a vehicle to sort through the thoughts and encounters that inevitably come with the reality of growing up. After all, Soccer Mommy began as a bedroom-to-Bandcamp exercise with teenage Allison posting her plaintive songs as demos. Over the years, though, she has often enhanced that sound, using the endless production possibilities, newly at her fingertips, to outstrip singer-songwriter stereotypes. The records would start with songwritingâs kernels of truth, and she would then imagine all the unexpected shapes they could take. Every Soccer Mommy record has felt like a surprise.
On Soccer Mommyâs fourth album, the tender but resolute Evergreen, Allison is again writing about her life. But that lifeâs different these days: Since making her previous album, 2022âs Sometimes, Forever, Allison experienced a profound and also very personal loss. New songs emerged from that change, unflinching and sometimes even funny reflections on what she was feeling. (Speaking of funny, this is a Soccer Mommy album, so thereâs an ode to Allisonâs purple-haired wife in the game Stardew Valley, too.) These songs were, once again, Allisonâs way to sort through life, to ground herself. She wanted them to sound that way, too, to feel as true to the demosâraw and relatable, unvarnished and honestâas possible. The songwriting would again lead where the production would follow. Nothing overindulgent, everything real.

Jeff VanderMeer's internationally bestselling, critically acclaimed Southern Reach series has been translated into over 37 languages. Called "the weird Thoreau" by The New Yorker, VanderMeerâs nonfiction has appeared in Time, The Nation, the Los Angeles Times, and Esquire, among other publications.
A.L. Goldfuss lives in the Pacific Northwest with stacks of tea and carnivorous plants.
The Fall Author Series is co-sponsored by Spoke & Word Books. Special thanks to the Friends of the Ledding Library for providing the funding that makes this program possible.
Sienna Spiro: My House Tour
London-born singer and songwriter SIENNA SPIRO announces the âMy Houseâ tour, including an extensive North American fall run followed by dates in Asia, Australia, New Zealand, UK and Europe.
Just last week, SIENNA released the official music video for her enthralling single âThe Visitor.â Written and produced by SIENNA with Omer Fedi (SZA, Lil Nas X) and Michael Pollack (Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus), the song draws its power from a spellbinding vocal recorded in one take, lyrics that cut to the bone, and a 20-piece string orchestra led and arranged by Academy Award-winner Peter Rotter (Oppenheimer, The Last Repair Shop). While SIENNAâs poetry and the video nod to matters of the heart, by the songâs end, we sense that sheâs singing about something more: a strong awareness of impermanence â of things ending and people leaving â that can quickly turn into paralyzing fear. That sentiment is the driving force behind the concept that powers Visitor, the album.
Of course, SIENNA is very much here to stay. Her music has amassed over 1.2 billion global streams so far and, in late March, she had a trio of singles climbing the Hot 100 all at once: âThe Visitorâ (which so far peaked at #43), heartwrenching UK Platinum smash âDie On This Hillâ (#19), and the enduring âYou Stole The Showâ (#55). All three are set to appear on Visitor, which was executive produced by Fedi with additional production from an elite crew including Blake Slatkin, Yakob, and Pollack, plus composers like Larry Gold (Al Green, Silk Sonic) and Rotter. SIENNA and her hand-picked collaborators brought her vision to life in an array of legendary spaces like Electric Lady Studios in New York, Abbey Road Studios in London, and Valentine Recording Studios in Los Angeles.
RaphaÍl Feuillâtre: Latin Passions
Hailed by France Musique as the new face of the classical guitar, Djibouti-born French guitarist RaphaĂŤl Feuillâtre regularly delights audiences and critics worldwide with his charismatic artistry, embracing everything from Baroque-period repertoire to compositions by trailblazing contemporary composers. His jaw-dropping precision, technical mastery, and creative vision make works from all time periods sound as if they were written yesterdayâalive, heartfelt, and filled with color. Donât miss a passionate evening of Latin music, including many of Feuillâtreâs own arrangements.
Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812
From the celebrated and award-winning composer Dave Malloy comes Natasha, Pierre and The Great Comet of 1812, an electropop opera based on a scandalous slice of Leo Tolstoyâs War and Peace. Young and impulsive, Natasha Rostova arrives in Moscow to await the return of her fiancĂŠ from the front lines. When she falls under the spell of the roguish Anatole, it is up to Pierre, a family friend in the middle of an existential crisis, to pick up the pieces of her shattered reputation. Following a critically exalted premiere at Ars Nova in New York City, a subsequent off-Broadway transfer and an acclaimed run on Broadway, this award-winning musical expands the possibilities for the genre with its daring score and bold storytelling.

Penn and Teller
From humble beginnings 50 years ago busking on the streets of Philadelphia, to acclaimed soldâout runs on Broadway and renown as the longest-running and one of the most-beloved resident headline acts in Las Vegas history, magicâs legendary duo â Penn Jillette and Teller â continue to defy labels (and at times physics and good taste), by redefining the genre of magic and inventing their own very distinct niche in comedy.
The current hit series Penn & Teller: Fool Us! for The CW Network, on which up-and-comers and magic veterans try to fool Penn & Teller for a chance to star in the pairâs hit Las Vegas stage show, was nominated for a Criticsâ Choice Award and has been renewed for an unprecedented 12th season. The show is the longest continual American magic television series in history, introducing the art to new fans and cultivating new generations of innovators within the craft.
Twice named âMagicians of the Yearâ by the Academy of Magical Arts, the equivalent of the Oscars in magic, they were named the 2024 Masters Fellowship recipients, the highest honor the Academy bestows. The pair live in Las Vegas, where they are engaged in their community, acting as honorary chairmen for AFAN (Aid for AIDS Nevada), raising and donating nearly $2 million and serving as grand marshals for AFANâs annual Las Vegas AIDS Walk for the past 23 years. Through their involvement with Opportunity Village, which assists in employment placement and lifestyle betterment for those living with intellectual disabilities, they have raised over $1 million. The annual blood drive, Penn & Tellerâs 13 Bloody Days of Christmas, has resulted in over 85,000 donors since its inception. In 2023, they took part in the USOâs annual Christmas tour, entertaining thousands of servicemen and servicewomen in bases across Europe.
In 2025, the pair celebrated 50 years as innovators in combining smart, edgy comedy with their unique magical style.
Songwriters in the Round
âWhen we travel down those old back roads, thatâs when we finally find our way,â sings Portland songwriter Richard Colombo â and that spirit of discovery runs through every note he plays. For over four decades, Richard has been a beloved songwriter, performer, teacher, and community builder whose heartfelt songs blend timeless storytelling with themes of love, courage, and joy. Known for his clear tenor voice, masterful guitar work, and playful energy, Richardâs performances move easily between the profound and the delightfully whimsical â especially when he breaks out his banjo ukulele. A night with Richard leaves audiences feeling uplifted, inspired, and connected.
Inge Hoogerhuis is a singer-songwriter, but that is not how she started out - a lounge and cabaret singer from way back when, who traveled up and down Highway 75, to Las Vegas, and then found a home on the West Coast. She has sung in grange halls to fancy hotels, for 20 people from the back of a pick-up truck to 500,000 in San Francisco's Gay Pride. But her favorite thing to do is to write songs that capture both the humor and melancholy of the West, and that ruminate over love and justice, lost and gained. You can catch her on Spotify or at local watering holes around Portland.
Wendy Emerson is a folk jazz guitarist and vocalist whose music is influenced by ballads and show tunes from the swing era, as well as folk and rock music from the 1950s on. Her repertoire consists of jazzy covers and originals about love and loss served up with a generous helping of speaking truth to power.
Brent Calderwood is a Portland-based singer, songwriter, guitarist, and pianist inspired by indie-folk, Americana, and the American songbook.

In Crescendo, her enchanting and deeply personal memoir, Kreston writes about growing up in a well-to-do but difficult family in Chicago, leaving home at age sixteen, studying at the ultracompetitive Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia (Hilary Hahn was a classmate), then burning out and leaving it all behind for a commune in Oregon.

Hung Dance
Choreographer Lai Hung-Chung makes dances of striking beauty and intention. âBirdy,â his captivating signature work for Hung Dance, moves between suspense and explosive energy, between the weight of tradition and the pull toward something new. Hung Dance blends traditional Chinese arts, including tai chi, Peking Opera, and classical Chinese music, with contemporary dance technique and driving electronic music, creating work that is poetic and rhythmic at once. What audiences see on stage is a world in constant transformation, where bodies bend and resist, images linger, and the tension between holding on and letting go becomes the dance itself.

Ron Steen - drums
We are thrilled to welcome home two of Portland's favored jazz musicians; acclaimed bassist, Ben Wolfe and renowned saxophonist, Nicole Glover. The two will be joined by beloved local jazz legend, Ron Steen for a homecoming show you won't want to miss!
Wolfe has performed and recorded with some of the most celebrated names in jazz and popular music, including Harry Connick Jr., Diana Krall, Wynton Marsalis, and many others. Wolfe brings an extraordinary depth of experience, musicianship, and creativity to the stage.
Joining him is Nicole Glover, whose powerful, adventurous saxophone playing has made her one of the most exciting voices in contemporary jazz. In 2026, Nicole was awarded âUp and Coming Musician of the Yearâ by the Jazz Journalists Association and #1 Rising Star Tenor Saxophonist & #1 Rising Star Soprano Saxophonist by Downbeat Magazine. Nicole is also a sought-after collaborator. She is currently touring with groups led by Christian McBride and Renee Rosnes, including the multi-award winning ARTEMIS. She has also toured and recorded with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Additionally, Nicole has worked under the leadership of drummers Al Foster, Billy Hart, Lenny White, Victor Lewis, Kenny Washington, Carl Allen, Gregory Hutchinson, and Joe Farnsworth; Grammy-winning vocalists Dee Dee Bridgewater and Buika; bassists John Patitucci, Reggie Workman, Harish Raghavan, Ben Wolfe, and Or Bareket; vibraphonist Joel Ross; and pianists Bill Charlap, Geoffrey Keezer, Aaron Diehl, Luis Perdomo, Christian Sands, Micah Thomas, and George Colligan, among others.

Drummer, bandleader, Ron is known as the Godfather of the Jazz Jam scene in Portland, Oregon. Writes the JJAâs Rick Mitchell: âThe jam session is at the heart of the jazz tradition. While high school and college jazz programs have proliferated in recent decades, there is no substitute for the knowledge gained by sharing a bandstand with oneâs elders and peers in an exposed and competitive setting." Ron has built and nurtured that philosophy in Portland for decades.
