Pine Pruning Demonstration

Pruning pines to achieve the look they have in spaces like Portland Japanese Garden requires meticulous care and years of learning. In this demonstration, Pete Putnicki, Japanese Pruning Specialist and former Senior Gardener at Seattle Japanese Garden, will discuss the maintenance of pine trees.

This program will start with a tour of the Garden focusing on pine trees, followed by a lecture and demonstration. The demonstration will focus on candling, needling, growth regulation, and pruning techniques. Participants will have a chance to experience pine needling themselves with an instructor guiding them along the way.

This one-day demonstration is limited to 15 participants.

Participants should bring their own lunch, a reusable drinking cup or water bottle.

Educational material will be provided.

Event fees are non-refundable and this event takes place rain or shine, so please dress appropriately for the weather.

UP Eco Club X Moreau Center Neighborhood Clean Up

Join Eco Club and the Moreau Center for Service and Justice to give a little TLC to the local neighborhood after Halloween festivities. After holidays like Halloween, we tend to see a spike in litter on and around campus and we have the opportunity to change that on November 1st from 1 to 3pm! We will walk along Willamette Blvd and around through N Fiske Ave, N Yale St, and N Van Houten Ave. At the start, meet us for check in on the walkway between the Chiles Center and Joe Etzel Baseball Field on N Portsmouth Ave. There, we'll have all supplies provided including gloves, garbage bags, vests, and grabbers. We'll also have snacks and donuts available to kick off the event. This event is open to the UP community as well as other neighborhood locals and anyone who wants to volunteer. We will have restrooms available on campus, and there is plenty of parking available. Please register in advance so we make sure to have enough cleanup supplies. Please bring your own trash grabber if you have one. All ages are welcome. We recommend working in pairs or small groups, dressing for the weather, and bringing a waterbottle. Black Hole Falls

Black Hole Falls is a seldom-visited 50-foot waterfall tucked in a canyon on North Siouxon Creek.

The out-and-back trail covers about 10 miles with 2000 feet of elevation gain. The first couple miles are quite overgrown, in some places with thorny bushes. Depending on the recent rainfall, there may be brook crossings with the potential for getting wet feet. Two larger crossings require walking or scooting across a log which may make some hikers uneasy. Once past the overgrown portion and crossings, the trail is a nice walk in the woods to the stunning falls.

The final 6 miles of the drive are on gravel roads with a couple easy-to-miss turns and a short section steep enough that standard vehicles may have difficulty maintaining traction. A Washington Discover Pass is needed for parking.

We'll carpool from the MMC departing at 7 am for the approximately 90-minute drive and aim to be back by 4 pm.

We’ll work to clear this remote trail of brush, logs and other debris, and improve tread where needed.

Hiking information:

We’ll drive to the top of Horsetail Creek Trail and work our way down. The first few work days won’t involve much hiking, but the hike will become longer as we work toward the Bell Creek junction.

You should plan to participate in this trail party for its entirety. For safety reasons, please do not arrive late or expect to be able to leave early.

Event details:

Detailed event information, including directions to the meeting location, will be provided to registrants via email 48 hours prior to the event. If you’re volunteering for the first time, read this blog by a volunteer to know what to expect at your first trail party.

What to bring:

Plenty of water

Holiday outfits are encouraged for humans and dogs alike. Dogs are not required to attend this crowd-favorite event!

Dogs must be on a leash at all times. Strollers are allowed for kiddos but for safety purposes, no bikes, scooters, skates, or motorized vehicles are allowed at this event. There is also no designated dog potty area, so please pick up after your pups!

Join Columbia Slough Watershed Council and Bird Guide Ryan Gilpin, from Nidus Consulting for a morning of Birding at Blue Lake Regional Park. Explore the beautiful Blue Lake and discover what birds may be flying, as we walk and practice identifying birds! This is a rain or shine event. All ages are welcome. Participants under the age of 18, will need to be accompanied by a parent, adult, or legal guardian.

What to bring: Dress for the weather and bring water. Snacks and drinks will be available. We will have extra binoculars. Bring yours, if you have them! Dogs are not allowed in this park because they can damage sensitive habitat and threaten wildlife.

Getting there:

See map below for meeting point and ideal parking location, circled in red. We will meet at Celilo Shelter. Metro kindly reserved this shelter for us from 9am-11am.

Metro has also granted us with 15 parking passes, free of charge. These passes are reserved on a first come, first serve basis. If you reserved a parking pass ticket - once you have arrived, drive past the kiosk, and check in with Liz at the welcome table to claim your pass. All passes need to be displayed in your windshield of your vehicle. Please attempt to carpool.

Parking passes are $5 per car, and can be purchased at Blue Lake. If you would like to attend and seeking no barrier to entry, please reach out.

We invite you to join our transformation in nature retreat to slow down from your daily life, capture moments in nature, reflect and resonate with the seasonal changes that surround us.

Participants will begin with self-reflective prompts before embarking on a slow, guided walk, where they will be invited to observe and capture with a camera (or cell phone) how the late autumn garden mirrors the landscapes of transformation, grief and transition.

The seasonal landscape itself becomes a teacher: the architectural presence of conifers standing among bare deciduous trees, the rich layers of fallen leaves returning to the soil, beavers preparing for winter, eagles tending their nests, seed pods, mosses, textures, changing light, and the quiet beauty that emerges when life appears stripped down to its essence.

Through mindful photographs, participants will gather visual "fragments" before coming together in a circle for creative reflection, gentle conversation, and complementary herbal teas. The intention is to cultivate presence, symbolism, and a compassionate way of witnessing both nature and ourselves.

Bring comfortable walking shoes, weather-appropriate layers, drinking water, optional snack, camera or cell phone. If using a cell phone camera, be sure that the sound is off.

All are welcome for this fun community run and walking group, held on the first Saturday of every month. This is a free community group, so anyone can join the runners or walkers at no cost. It's a great Milwaukie Running Club group. The sauna social after the run is offered at half price: just $14.50. Capacity is limited to the first 20 sign-ups, so you are encouraged to sign up in advance.

The light pace is great for beginners, and set by the group. If a few people want to go slower or faster, the group will split into different-paced pods. Simply show up just before 8 a.m., run or walk for about an hour, then enjoy sauna time together at half price afterward.

Soak up that steam and the cold contrast for muscle recovery, improved circulation and enhanced running performance. Meet rain or shine and always make sure everyone is feeling safe and supported. Keep up that momentum toward your 2026 goals with this guided route — run or walk.

It's a great Milwaukie Running Club group. The sauna social after the run is offered at half price: just $14.50. Capacity is limited to the first 20 sign-ups, so you are encouraged to sign up in advance.

The light pace is great for beginners, and set by the group. If a few people want to go slower or faster, the group will split into different-paced pods. Simply show up just before 8 a.m., run or walk for about an hour, then enjoy sauna time together at half price afterward.

Hiking information:

This is a moderate hike with consistent elevation gain. We will hike from the Angel’s Rest Trailhead off of the historic highway and continue up about 1.6 miles before we get to the first area of work. After that, we will work as we hike, taking breaks as needed. The climb is about 1100 feet to our first work area and 1400 overall.

You should plan to participate in this trail party for its entirety. For safety reasons, please do not arrive late or expect to be able to leave early.

This is a nice late season hike with great views if we catch a crisp bluebird day. It's about 9 miles and 1700 ft elevation gain. It follows the PCT to Indian Racetrack before climbing up Red Mountain and back to the trailhead along a closed, gravel road. Oregon Hikers has a good description. The drive is about 1.5 hrs from the MMC.

This will be an exploratory hike as I've previously taken a different out and back route to Red Mountain. While I haven't hiked this exact trail, I do know that this time of year in the Indian Heaven Wilderness there can be swampy sections of the trail depending on if there has been melting snow or a good rain that fills the meadows. It's worth a little damp shoes though!

Spectators can enjoy the region’s most spectacular drive-through light show, viewing over 250 colorful light set pieces and many fully animated scenes from the comfort of their own vehicle. Studded tires and chains are not allowed at Portland International Raceway.

Bike the Lights is reserved for cyclists. Take a lap or five and see over 250 holiday light displays up close on Sunday, November 29. This event has a dedicated following of bike lovers who attend year after year, decking out their rides in holiday lights and rocking their favorite holiday gear — from Santa suits to reindeer onesies. Bike the Lights is a pedal-power-only event (speed limit is 10mph). E-bikes are allowed as long as they have pedals. Safety gear is highly encouraged for all participants, though kids 16 and under must wear a helmet.

Lights and Leashes, sponsored by Country Financial, is a dog-friendly walking event where anyone can experience the magic of Winter Wonderland at their own pace on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1. Take a leisurely stroll and see over a million holiday lights up close. Holiday outfits are encouraged for humans and dogs alike. Dogs are not required to attend this crowd-favorite event. Dogs must be on a leash at all times. Strollers are allowed for kiddos, but for safety purposes, no bikes, scooters, skates, or motorized vehicles are allowed at this event. Haunted Walking Tours

The Clark County Historical Museum will offer Haunted Walking Tours at 7 p.m. every Friday and Saturday in September and October. Guides will lead groups of 25 people through downtown Vancouver and beyond, stopping to share tales of lingering spirits, mysterious happenings, forgotten tragedies and moments when history and the supernatural cross paths. Brainy Birds: Fall

Birds are incredible and have adapted to survive in dynamic & changing environments. Every species has unique traits and sometimes quite specialized strategies. Using the backdrop of seasonal changes at Hoyt Arboretum, Dr. Kiki Sanford will facilitate discovery of the many ways it is connected to its avian inhabitants. Winter classes will center on adaptations for surviving intense seasonal conditions. Spring brings the frenzy of breeding season. Summer includes juvenile development and the onset of the next annual cycle. And, Autumn classes will focus on the fall migration. Each seasonal class will highlight the various birds present in the Arboretum, and include observation & discussion of specific aspects of how their brains & bodies lead to certain behaviors useful in the Hoyt habitats. The trail is fairly accessible, being short and relatively flat. We don’t have good intel on where exactly the trail issues are, so we’ll plan on hiking the entire trail, unless I can get out and scout it ahead of time.

You should plan to participate in this trail party for its entirety. For safety reasons, please do not arrive late or expect to be able to leave early.

We'll visit two unique gorge viewpoints. Wind Mountain has a short but steep trail to an area of significance to indigenous peoples. 2.8 miles and 1300 feet of elevation gain. A small section of the trail is steep and loose enough that a rope hand-line has been put in place.

After a 25-minute drive back towards Portland, we'll hike to the top of Beacon Rock from the Doetsch Day Use Area via the River to Rock trail. About 5 miles with 900 feet of gain. Portions of the trail may be overgrown with blackberry bushes and nettles.

We'll carpool from the MMC departing at 7:30 am or you can meet us at the Wind Mountain trailhead at 8:30. A Washington Discover Pass is needed for parking at the Doetsch Day Use Area.

This trail at Eagle Fern park is across the road from the main body of the park, and has been very lightly used over the years, and poorly maintained. There are several switchbacks that need to be extended to decrease grade on the trail, and much tread reheabilitation needs to be done. There are several logs on the trail that need to be cut and removed.

Hiking information:

The trail is about half a mile in length. We’ll start at the trailhead and gradually work our way to the top. It is steep in some areas and the tread is uneven and in poor conditon at this time, as we begin this project.

You should plan to participate in this trail party for its entirety. For safety reasons, please do not arrive late or expect to be able to leave early.

Staff and trained Arboretum volunteers will introduce you and your family to the plants, trees, insects, mushrooms, and more found at Hoyt Arboretum. Tree Time walks are held on Mondays and Saturdays at 10 am year-round. Tree Time walks are geared to children ages 2 to 6 and their guardians.

We’ll be installing gabions to repair a collapsed trail section. Park staff will have brought the materials in close to the site to minimize hauling. We’ll excavate for three 3-foot gabions, fill them with rock, add a curb log, and secure the old railing post to the gabion.

The hike to the project site is about 1/2 mile on well-maintained natural surface trail. There are some steep sections.
