Join Eco Club and the Moreau Center for Service and Justice to give a little TLC to the local neighborhood after Halloween festivities. After holidays like Halloween, we tend to see a spike in litter on and around campus and we have the opportunity to change that on November 1st from 1 to 3pm! We will walk along Willamette Blvd and around through N Fiske Ave, N Yale St, and N Van Houten Ave. At the start, meet us for check in on the walkway between the Chiles Center and Joe Etzel Baseball Field on N Portsmouth Ave. There, we'll have all supplies provided including gloves, garbage bags, vests, and grabbers. We'll also have snacks and donuts available to kick off the event. This event is open to the UP community as well as other neighborhood locals and anyone who wants to volunteer. We will have restrooms available on campus, and there is plenty of parking available. Please register in advance so we make sure to have enough cleanup supplies. Please bring your own trash grabber if you have one. All ages are welcome. We recommend working in pairs or small groups, dressing for the weather, and bringing a waterbottle. The Portland Grief House invites you to join The Lost Table, a welcoming space to gather in community, remember those we’ve lost, and share in the traditions that help us keep them close. Bring a dish, pull up a chair, and make a place at the table for the dead. Grief can be hard to understand, and sometimes what we need most is community, ritual, conversation, and food.

Together, we’ll explore how different cultures and traditions call to, honor, and make offerings to those who have died. In the spirit of Día de Muertos, we’ll create a shared space where the living and the dead can gather around the same table.

We’ll begin with a creative activity led by Mario Mesquita, inviting us to reflect on memory, food, and our relationships with those we’ve lost. Participants will be introduced to the ritual elements that will carry us through the evening.

Laura Green will lead a community conversation about intercultural traditions of Día de Muertos and other ways communities call to and remember their dead. Participants will have an opportunity to share stories, traditions, and memories, and to dedicate an offering to someone they have lost.

Bea Yeh will introduce the tradition of Hungry Ghost and lead us in making an offering to the dead. We’ll set places at our table for those who are no longer with us and share food as an act of remembrance and connection.

Our community offerings and tributes will be gathered at Ximena Morales’s altar, creating a shared space of remembrance that connects the different traditions and offerings brought into the room.

Throughout the evening, we’ll create something together through words, offerings, and remembrance. We’ll dedicate a community poem to the dead and close our gathering with a collective ritual of words, sound, and stillness.

Please bring:

A dish to share, plus any serving utensils it needs. Consider bringing something that reminds you of a loved one or connects you to a family or cultural tradition.
Please label your food with a card identifying any allergens or dietary considerations.
Your own dinnerware (plate, bowl, utensils, napkin).
A beverage for yourself, if you’d like something other than water.
A photograph, name, or other small tribute to a loved one for the community altar, if you’d like.
Please do not bring chips, salsa, or guacamole—Milagro will provide these.

Pruning pines to achieve the look they have in spaces like Portland Japanese Garden requires meticulous care and years of learning. In this demonstration, Pete Putnicki, Japanese Pruning Specialist and former Senior Gardener at Seattle Japanese Garden, will discuss the maintenance of pine trees.

This program will start with a tour of the Garden focusing on pine trees, followed by a lecture and demonstration. The demonstration will focus on candling, needling, growth regulation, and pruning techniques. Participants will have a chance to experience pine needling themselves with an instructor guiding them along the way.

This one-day demonstration is limited to 15 participants.

Ridgefield Main Street presents Sips of the Season, a downtown wine, cider, beer and spirits walk, from 3-7 p.m. Nov. 7. Guests can enjoy seasonal tastings at participating downtown Ridgefield businesses. Two ticket packages are available: five tastings for $25 or ten tastings for $45. Each ticket includes a commemorative tasting glass, goodie bag and map of participating locations. The 21-and-over event is a fundraiser for Ridgefield Main Street. “Go west young man and grow up with the country.” While many men did heed this call to the western frontier seeking adventure and fortune, most women came with their families– as children, as wives and often as mothers caring for children. This tour will highlight their unique stories and their roles in the community as Portland transitioned from a rough and tumble frontier town to an early 20th century city.

As we walk through beautiful Lone Fir Cemetery, we will visit the gravesites of women whose names you may recognize as Portland’s founding families: Terwilliger, McLoughlin, Macleay, as well as lesser-known women whose contributions through civic, philanthropic, and religious organizations improved the lives of Portlanders.

During the gathering, each participant will have a few minutes to share their grief in whatever way feels right—whether it's someone who is missed, something that has changed, a loss being carried, or an experience that continues to shape. While one person shares, the rest will listen with care and presence. Save time at the end of the evening to thank one another and connect, but please refrain from interrupting or responding during the sharing portion.

Día de Muertos and the month of November invite you to reflect on and remember loved ones who have passed—a time to celebrate their lives and meet death not with fear, but with love, memory, storytelling, and even humor. Mario Mesquita will lead an opening creative activity exploring memory and the role of cuisine in honoring loved ones, building toward a collective community tribute. Participants are welcome to bring a photograph of a loved one or create an offering featuring their loved one's name.

Join the final class in the mushroom education series that began in June. This Mushroom Identification class is designed to help you build confidence in recognizing common fungi in their natural habitat while deepening your understanding of mushroom characteristics, seasonal patterns, and safe foraging practices.

Because collecting plants or fungi is not permitted in Forest Park, this class focuses on education and observation—learning how to identify mushrooms in a wild setting without harvesting. You’ll gain practical skills and tips you can apply when exploring and foraging outside of Forest Park on your own.

Come ready to learn, observe, and enjoy the fascinating world of fungi.

We will meet at Germantown and Leif Erikson Trailhead.

We’ll work to clear this remote trail of brush, logs and other debris, and improve tread where needed.

Hiking information:

We’ll drive to the top of Horsetail Creek Trail and work our way down. The first few work days won’t involve much hiking, but the hike will become longer as we work toward the Bell Creek junction.

You should plan to participate in this trail party for its entirety. For safety reasons, please do not arrive late or expect to be able to leave early.

Lights & Leashes is our dog-friendly walking event where anyone can experience the magic of Winter Wonderland at their own pace. Take a leisurely stroll and see over a millions holiday lights up close!

Transformation in Nature with Clara-Julia Peru

We invite you to join our transformation in nature retreat to slow down from your daily life, capture moments in nature, reflect and resonate with the seasonal changes that surround us.

Participants will begin with self-reflective prompts before embarking on a slow, guided walk, where they will be invited to observe and capture with a camera (or cell phone) how the late autumn garden mirrors the landscapes of transformation, grief and transition.

The seasonal landscape itself becomes a teacher: the architectural presence of conifers standing among bare deciduous trees, the rich layers of fallen leaves returning to the soil, beavers preparing for winter, eagles tending their nests, seed pods, mosses, textures, changing light, and the quiet beauty that emerges when life appears stripped down to its essence.

Through mindful photographs, participants will gather visual "fragments" before coming together in a circle for creative reflection, gentle conversation, and complementary herbal teas. The intention is to cultivate presence, symbolism, and a compassionate way of witnessing both nature and ourselves.

Bring comfortable walking shoes, weather-appropriate layers, drinking water, optional snack, camera or cell phone. If using a cell phone camera, be sure that the sound is off.

Join Columbia Slough Watershed Council and Bird Guide Ryan Gilpin, from Nidus Consulting for a morning of Birding at Blue Lake Regional Park. Explore the beautiful Blue Lake and discover what birds may be flying, as we walk and practice identifying birds! This is a rain or shine event. All ages are welcome. Participants under the age of 18, will need to be accompanied by a parent, adult, or legal guardian.

What to bring: Dress for the weather and bring water. Snacks and drinks will be available. We will have extra binoculars. Bring yours, if you have them! Dogs are not allowed in this park because they can damage sensitive habitat and threaten wildlife.

Getting there:

See map below for meeting point and ideal parking location, circled in red. We will meet at Celilo Shelter. Metro kindly reserved this shelter for us from 9am-11am.

Metro has also granted us with 15 parking passes, free of charge. These passes are reserved on a first come, first serve basis. If you reserved a parking pass ticket - once you have arrived, drive past the kiosk, and check in with Liz at the welcome table to claim your pass. All passes need to be displayed in your windshield of your vehicle. Please attempt to carpool.

Parking passes are $5 per car, and can be purchased at Blue Lake. If you would like to attend and seeking no barrier to entry, please reach out.

It follows the PCT to Indian Racetrack before climbing up Red Mountain and back to the trailhead along a closed, gravel road. Oregon Hikers has a good description. The drive is about 1.5 hrs from the MMC.

This will be an exploratory hike as I've previously taken a different out and back route to Red Mountain. While I haven't hiked this exact trail, I do know that this time of year in the Indian Heaven Wilderness there can be swampy sections of the trail depending on if there has been melting snow or a good rain that fills the meadows. It's worth a little damp shoes though!

Project Information:

We’ll be completing some maintenance on the popular Angel’s Rest Trail, including brushing with hand tools, light tread maintenance, and decommissioning areas where hikers are cutting switchbacks.

Hiking information:

This is a moderate hike with consistent elevation gain. We will hike from the Angel’s Rest Trailhead off of the historic highway and continue up about 1.6 miles before we get to the first area of work. After that, we will work as we hike, taking breaks as needed. The climb is about 1100 feet to our first work area and 1400 overall.

You should plan to participate in this trail party for its entirety. For safety reasons, please do not arrive late or expect to be able to leave early.

Project Information:

We’ll be completing some maintenance on the popular Angel’s Rest Trail, including brushing with hand tools, light tread maintenance, and decommissioning areas where hikers are cutting switchbacks.

Hiking information:

This is a moderate hike with consistent elevation gain. We will hike from the Angel’s Rest Trailhead off of the historic highway and continue up about 1.6 miles before we get to the first area of work. After that, we will work as we hike, taking breaks as needed. The climb is about 1100 feet to our first work area and 1400 overall.

You should plan to participate in this trail party for its entirety. For safety reasons, please do not arrive late or expect to be able to leave early.

Recognized throughout the Pacific Northwest as the “Largest Holiday Light Show West of the Mississippi”, Winter Wonderland will grab your attention with glimmers and glows around every corner. Since 1993, a journey through Winter Wonderland has become a holiday tradition for many families, friends, and social organizations, celebrating the spirit of the season. Spectators can enjoy the region’s most spectacular drive-through light show, viewing over 250 colorful light set pieces and many fully animated scenes from the comfort of their own vehicle. Studded tires and chains are not allowed at Portland International Raceway.

Bike the Lights is reserved for cyclists. Take a lap or five and see over 250 holiday light displays up close on Sunday, November 29. This event has a dedicated following of bike lovers who attend year after year, decking out their rides in holiday lights and rocking their favorite holiday gear — from Santa suits to reindeer onesies. Bike the Lights is a pedal-power-only event (speed limit is 10mph). E-bikes are allowed as long as they have pedals. Safety gear is highly encouraged for all participants, though kids 16 and under must wear a helmet.

Lights and Leashes, sponsored by Country Financial, is a dog-friendly walking event where anyone can experience the magic of Winter Wonderland at their own pace on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1. Take a leisurely stroll and see over a million holiday lights up close. Holiday outfits are encouraged for humans and dogs alike. Dogs are not required to attend this crowd-favorite event. Dogs must be on a leash at all times. Strollers are allowed for kiddos, but for safety purposes, no bikes, scooters, skates, or motorized vehicles are allowed at this event. There is also no designated dog potty area, so please pick up after your pups.

We'll visit two unique gorge viewpoints. Wind Mountain has a short but steep trail to an area of significance to indigenous peoples. 2.8 miles and 1300 feet of elevation gain. A small section of the trail is steep and loose enough that a rope hand-line has been put in place.

After a 25-minute drive back towards Portland, we'll hike to the top of Beacon Rock from the Doetsch Day Use Area via the River to Rock trail. About 5 miles with 900 feet of gain. Portions of the trail may be overgrown with blackberry bushes and nettles.

We'll carpool from the MMC departing at 7:30 am or you can meet us at the Wind Mountain trailhead at 8:30. A Washington Discover Pass is needed for parking at the Doetsch Day Use Area.

Haunted Walking Tours

The Clark County Historical Museum will offer Haunted Walking Tours at 7 p.m. every Friday and Saturday in September and October. Guides will lead groups of 25 people through downtown Vancouver and beyond, stopping to share tales of lingering spirits, mysterious happenings, forgotten tragedies and moments when history and the supernatural cross paths. A welcoming community meet for runners and power walkers gathers on the first Saturday of each month. Participation is free and open to all, with a beginner friendly pace set by the group. If different speeds emerge, participants split into smaller pace pods so everyone can move comfortably. This Milwaukie Running Club group follows a guided route and keeps the tone light and fun. Afterward, a sauna social is available at a reduced rate of $14.50, limited to the first 20 sign ups, and advance sign up is encouraged. Completing the liability waiver ahead of time can make check in faster. Led by Portland native Justine @runwithms, the post session steam and cold contrast are highlighted for muscle recovery, improved circulation, and enhanced running performance. The Alder Flat trail was affected by the 2020 Riverside Fire. Over the course of the summer, some tread damage has occured that the Forest Service is requesting we handle. We will be addressing that and any downed trees/limbs we encounter along the way.

The trail is fairly accessible, being short and relatively flat. We don’t have good intel on where exactly the trail issues are, so we’ll plan on hiking the entire trail, unless I can get out and scout it ahead of time.

Project Information:

The Alder Flat trail was affected by the 2020 Riverside Fire. Over the course of the summer, some tread damage has occured that the Forest Service is requesting we handle. We will be addressing that and any downed trees/limbs we encounter along the way.

Hiking information:

The trail is fairly accessible, being short and relatively flat. We don’t have good intel on where exactly the trail issues are, so we’ll plan on hiking the entire trail, unless I can get out and scout it ahead of time.

You should plan to participate in this trail party for its entirety. For safety reasons, please do not arrive late or expect to be able to leave early.

Plenty of water
Snacks/lunch
Work gloves if you have them (loaner gloves available)

A pack to bring all of this with you on trail
TKO provides all tools and personal protective equipment (hard hats, gloves, glasses)

What to wear:

Boots (Please wear something sturdy that will protect your toes from sharp tools. Tennis shoes are not recommended. Open-toed shoes will not be allowed.)

Brainy Birds: Fall

Birds are incredible and have adapted to survive in dynamic & changing environments. Every species has unique traits and sometimes quite specialized strategies. Using the backdrop of seasonal changes at Hoyt Arboretum, Dr. Kiki Sanford will facilitate discovery of the many ways it is connected to its avian inhabitants. Winter classes will center on adaptations for surviving intense seasonal conditions. Spring brings the frenzy of breeding season. Summer includes juvenile development and the onset of the next annual cycle. And, Autumn classes will focus on the fall migration. Each seasonal class will highlight the various birds present in the Arboretum, and include observation & discussion of specific aspects of how their brains & bodies lead to certain behaviors useful in the Hoyt habitats. Short informal lectures and group discussions will be followed by exploratory bird-watching hikes to observe these processes in action. Please register through the Hoyt Arboretum website. — 40

Want to get to know the cemetery better? Take one of the monthly tours. Tours highlight Portland’s founders and regionally-known pioneers.

Reservations or donations are not required for the tour but are greatly appreciated. All proceeds go to fund the workshops and cemetery preservation work.

Two different guided tours are available each month — the Historical Tour and the Stories in Stone Tour. Both give you an opportunity to learn about the community while enjoying the beauty of the cemetery. After each tour, you will have the chance to purchase FLFC merchandise and learn how you can become a member.

Forest Park Volunteer Trail Work Event

Project details
Join PP&R and Forest Park Conservancy to help restore Forest Park. Volunteers will be hiking on the site and will be working on maintaining the trails in the park. Please dress for the weather, wear closed toed shoes, water and snacks. Tools, gloves, project instruction, snacks, hot drinks and hand warmers provided. There is a restroom on site.

Please bring your own water bottle, wear closed toe shoes, and dress for the weather. Instructions, tools, and gloves will be provided. For the safety of staff and other volunteers, please stay home if you are feeling sick.

This will ensure that there are enough gloves and tools for everyone to work. We are also available to schedule special service events at your group's convenience during the week or on weekends.
