Great Pumpkin Toss

There are a number of ways you can dispose of your Halloween pumpkin - you can put it in your compost pile, you can put it in your yard debris container for curbside collection, or... you can toss it off the training tower at the Westlake Fire Station!

Bring your pumpkins, carved or not, to Westlake Park, 14165 Bunick Drive, on November 1 between 2 and 5 p.m. to take part in this free, fun event. Participants will climb the tower and toss their pumpkin to a target below.

Hosted by the Lake Oswego Fire Department, and joined by Lake Oswego Police and Library, this event supports Hunger Fighters Oregon (www.hungerfightersoregon.org), a small food pantry located in Lake Oswego dedicated to providing food and essential household items at no cost to those in need. To help, please bring a donation of non-expired, non-perishable food items. Thanksgiving/holiday foods and ingredients such as mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, broth, and pie/bread mix are appreciated.

Join Columbia Slough Watershed Council and Bird Guide Ryan Gilpin, from Nidus Consulting for a morning of Birding at Blue Lake Regional Park. Explore the beautiful Blue Lake and discover what birds may be flying, as we walk and practice identifying birds! This is a rain or shine event. All ages are welcome. Participants under the age of 18, will need to be accompanied by a parent, adult, or legal guardian.

What to bring: Dress for the weather and bring water. Snacks and drinks will be available. We will have extra binoculars. Bring yours, if you have them! Dogs are not allowed in this park because they can damage sensitive habitat and threaten wildlife.

Getting there:

See map below for meeting point and ideal parking location, circled in red. We will meet at Celilo Shelter. Metro kindly reserved this shelter for us from 9am-11am.

Metro has also granted us with 15 parking passes, free of charge. These passes are reserved on a first come, first serve basis. If you reserved a parking pass ticket - once you have arrived, drive past the kiosk, and check in with Liz at the welcome table to claim your pass. All passes need to be displayed in your windshield of your vehicle. Please attempt to carpool.

Parking passes are $5 per car, and can be purchased at Blue Lake. If you would like to attend and seeking no barrier to entry, please reach out.

By Bus: Take Bus line 21 to NE Sandy & 223rd, then walk about 1 mile up 223rd to Blue Lake Park.

By bike: Use bike lanes east on Marine Drive to Blue Lake Road or east on Halsey to 223rd Avenue and follow the signs north to the park. Bicycles are welcome inside the park on paved paths.

Accessibility:

There are a couple of restrooms and water fountains located inside the park. The route will have mostly paved, flat trails with little gravel.

MISSION Albina Cooperative Garden's mission is to grow food to share with coop members, community members, and especially those in need. Also to use the farm to educate schools and others about the importance of growing healthy food and other plants for healthy habitats. VOLUNTEERING WITH US The Albina Cooperative Garden is the largest urban farm in the inner Portland area. Join us to learn about organic gardening, composting, pollinator habitat, and pruning while giving back to the local community. Volunteers will be doing a variety of activities, all of which are needed to grow organic food in a farm setting. Typically these will include: weeding, spreading compost/woodchips, composting, digging, planting, watering, transplanting, harvesting and pruning, and to help maintain the garden infrastructure. Volunteers should plan to bring (or wear) outdoor/gardening gear per the weather, a water bottle and gloves. Tools will be provided on site. Project Requirements: Volunteers must be 10 years of age or older to attend this project; any volunteer under age 16 must attend with a parent or adult chaperone. All volunteers under 18 are required to bring a Youth Volunteer Release Form signed by their parent or legal guardian. Please download, complete, and bring this waiver with you on the day of the project. If you plan to bring children or guests you MUST reserve slots for them. The best way to do this is to create a Volunteer Team, then sign up your team for this project. Operation NightwatchMap

At Operation Nightwatch, volunteers play an important role to those who come through our doors each night; and not only through serving food and distributing essential items. Social connection is at the heart of our mission, and we strive to provide our guests with hospitality and unconditional positive regard with each interaction. Three nights a week we provide a comfortable atmosphere for guests to socialize over a cup of coffee, connect with their greater community of unhoused and housed folks alike, cultivate friendships…and probably beat you at Scrabble. Volunteers are asked to arrive at 5:45 pm for a brief orientation and tour of our facilities before being assigned tasks. Throughout the evening you may be tasked with a variety of duties ranging from coffee service to bathroom monitor, but our core mission remains: providing hospitality & social connection. We invite you to show up just as you are, and expect you to extend the same grace to our guests. The majority of our guests are experiencing houselessness, but many do have housing and may even live nearby. Operation Nightwatch welcomes everyone without question. Every meal or cup of coffee is served with kindness and respect. Since 1981, Operation Nightwatch has been providing hospitality to alleviate the isolation experienced by those living on the streets. We also distribute essential items and offer drop in mental health support to those who request it. Our hospitality center is one of the few who offer nighttime services, and for this reason acts as a “last stop” and meeting place for folks to meet their basic needs, wind down, and connect with their community. Schoolhouse Supplies supports students and teachers throughout Portland Public Schools by operating a volunteer-run Free Store for Teachers. By collecting donations of all kinds - from classroom basics like pencils and paper to books, backpacks, and folders – from private and corporate donors, the Free Store for Teachers supplies much-needed learning materials to local classrooms. Every child deserves the tools they need to succeed in school – help us support this mission! Project Requirements: Volunteers must be 14 years of age or older to attend this project. If you plan to bring your children or other guests to the event, you MUST reserve slots for them. The best way to do this is to create a Volunteer Team. You can then sign up your team for this project. IMPORTANT NOTE: You are responsible for ensuring that everyone signed up through your team attends - only sign up team members who have confirmed their availability. Teams that repeatedly sign up, but do not show up or show up with fewer volunteers than they signed up, may be removed. Birds are incredible and have adapted to survive in dynamic & changing environments. Every species has unique traits and sometimes quite specialized strategies. Using the backdrop of seasonal changes at Hoyt Arboretum, Dr. Kiki Sanford will facilitate discovery of the many ways it is connected to its avian inhabitants. Winter classes will center on adaptations for surviving intense seasonal conditions. Spring brings the frenzy of breeding season. Summer includes juvenile development and the onset of the next annual cycle. And, Autumn classes will focus on the fall migration. Each seasonal class will highlight the various birds present in the Arboretum, and include observation & discussion of specific aspects of how their brains & bodies lead to certain behaviors useful in the Hoyt habitats. Broken jewelry clasps, earring hooks. No fine jewelry.
Manual garden tool sharpening: pruning shears, loppers, shovels and spades. No handsaws, knives or power tools.
Electronics repairs and computer cleaning and tune-ups. These categories generally take longer, and may be limited to one item per person.

Please note: bikes, televisions, microwaves, small engines and fine jewelry are not repairable at this event.

What to expect 

Try to bring anything that may be needed to repair your item: parts, buttons, matching thread, power cords, batteries, instructions manuals, etc. 
We try to help everyone who brings an item. If participants bring multiple items (allowed), we can only work on one item at a time and may be able to fix up to one item per person.  
Our volunteers will do their best to repair your item, but some repairs may be too complicated or require resources unavailable at the event.

Coats and winter wear in good condition is this event's featured swap item. "Shop" for previously loved clothes and bring some to share with others.

Transition ProjectsMap

Each year, Transition Projects assists over 10,000 people experiencing homelessness. Roughly half of Portlanders experiencing homelessness are currently unsheltered. Our Navigation Team seeks to engage people where they are, build trust, and help make connections to needed support services. Sack lunches provide a healthy meal and help build connections. Volunteers will be asked to bring items to contribute to the sack lunches and the group will prepare 50-100 sack lunches to be given out by our Navigation Team to individuals currently unhoused. You will be assigned what items to bring. Bring your food items and work alongside other volunteers to make sack lunches including PB&J sandwiches, fruit, and snacks. We're counting on you! It is imperative that if you sign up for this project, you intend to be there and provide the ingredients that are assigned to you. When volunteers don't show up, we're not able to prepare the sack lunches. If you are unable to attend, please let us know ASAP! Potluck in the Park Meal Service (age 12+) Hands On

Potluck in the Park has been serving a free hot meal to anyone in need since 1991. Every Sunday, rain or shine, 52 weeks a year, we provide a hot meal in downtown Portland in various locations. 400-800 Portlanders do not go hungry on Sunday because of Potluck in the Park. We are a volunteer-driven, nonprofit organization and we accomplish our mission of providing nutritious food and an atmosphere of community to anyone in need, because of volunteers like you! Potluck in the Park Location Details: Potluck in the Park takes place at the North Park Blocks. The location is around the sculpture at NW 8th and Glisan, in the parking lot of the Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA). PARKING There is on-street parking available for $2.00/hr AND a pay parking lot kitty-corner from the park. $5.00 day rate. TRANSIT -Streetcar stops at 10th & Glisan northbound, 11th & Glisan southbound. -MAX stops at Greyhound Depot on 5th & 6th (Yellow, Green and Orange Lines) -Buses: #17 from Downtown or NE, #77 from NE or NW -Or use TriMet’s Trip Planner https://trimet.org/#/planner Meal Service Activities Include: Helping to unload food and supplies Setting up and organizing in preparation for the meal service Serving hot or cold food to guests as they come through the line during meal service General clean-up which includes but is not limited to wiping down tables and picking up trash Helping to take down canopies and load supplies into the Potluck vans at the end of service Volunteer Requirements: All volunteers must sign up below to reserve a spot. If you plan to bring your children or other guests to the event, you MUST reserve slots for them. The best way to do this is to create a Volunteer Team. You can then sign up your team for this project. We ask that volunteers are 12 years of age or older to attend this project. Any volunteer under age 16 must attend with a parent or adult chaperone. All volunteers under 18 are required to bring a waiver signed by their parent or legal guardian, or - if attending with an adult - have them fill one out at the event. Please download, complete, and bring this waiver with you on the day of the project: Youth Volunteer Release Form Remember to give this to the person running check-in! Wednesday Meal Prep & Care Kit Volunteers (age 18+) Hands On

Operation NightwatchMap

Since 1981, Operation Nightwatch has provided hospitality to alleviate the isolation experienced by those living on the streets. We also distribute essential items and offer drop in mental health support to those who request it. Come help support your unhoused community by prepping snacks, meals, and care kits for our service nights. Food is one of our most essential needs — and the meaning behind a simple peanut butter and jelly sandwich is more powerful than you might think. Volunteers will work together to make sandwiches and other snacks, as well as assemble care kits that support the hygiene needs of our unhoused neighbors. Your time and effort help our outreach team run more smoothly during service nights and ensure that everyone we serve feels supported and cared for by their community. Volunteer Activities Include: Preparing and assembling sandwiches and snacks Packing care kits with hygiene essentials Organizing food and supply materials Time Commitment: Wednesdays, 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM Volunteers are welcome to join weekly or as available. Opportunity Requirements: Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older to participate in this opportunity.
