About this event

Learn the traditional Japanese art of sashiko, a visible mending technique that reinforces fabric while adding decorative stitching. No embroidery experience is needed. Instructor Angela will guide participants through adding a sashiko patch to clothing or fabric with a tear or hole, and introduce the history of sashiko, its uses today, and the types of mending it suits. The workshop covers threading a needle, knots, stitches and spacing, stitching order, and ways to transfer patterns. Participants can choose a stencil design and take home thread and a needle to continue their project or begin another. Bring one or more suitable items to mend, such as denim, cotton, linen, or twill; practice fabric and listed supplies will also be provided by Repair PDX.
