Giant Collaborative Neurographic Art

Church of Art's collaborative neurographics is a mindfulness-based creative activity that provides therapeutic relaxation through intuitive mark-making on a grand scale. For this mindfulness-based collaborative art activity, Church of Art will cover a long row of tables with a roll of paper and acrylic paint pens in a variety of sizes and colors. Participants will move freely around the table, filling the paper with sweeping, colorful doodles to the sounds of calming music. The giant scale allows for whole-arm movements, which signal brains to move out of fight-or-flight mode and into a state of mental relaxation and improved focus. The collaborative aspect of this workshop teaches one to let go of perfection and expectation through shared creative exploration, while working large encourages greater freedom of expression.

Neurographic art is a relatively new form of focused, intentional mark-making that uses curved, bold lines, vibrant colors and calming patterns. Physician and neurographics practitioner Ruben Halperin, M.D., will be the guide, co-facilitating this workshop with artist and Church of Art founder, Erika Halperin.

Immerse yourself in this beneficial form of meditative doodling and experience the mood-boosting effect of creativity coupled with community gathering.

Using paper and acrylic markers. All materials and supplies are provided by the studio.

Tickets Include:

  • 2 hours of guided creative exploration in a supportive, friendly environment with all supplies included.
  • Light snacks and non-alcoholic beverages are included.
  • That wonderful feeling of joy and connectedness that comes from a few hours of in-person artistic play with other adults.

The Lost Table

El Zรณcalo537 SE Stark Street

The Portland Grief House invites you to join The Lost Table, a welcoming space to gather in community, remember those weโ€™ve lost, and share in the traditions that help us keep them close. Bring a dish, pull up a chair, and make a place at the table for the dead. Grief can be hard to understand, and sometimes what we need most is community, ritual, conversation, and food.

Together, weโ€™ll explore how different cultures and traditions call to, honor, and make offerings to those who have died. In the spirit of Dรญa de Muertos, weโ€™ll create a shared space where the living and the dead can gather around the same table.

Weโ€™ll begin with a creative activity led by Mario Mesquita, inviting us to reflect on memory, food, and our relationships with those weโ€™ve lost. Participants will be introduced to the ritual elements that will carry us through the evening.

Laura Green will lead a community conversation about intercultural traditions of Dรญa de Muertos and other ways communities call to and remember their dead. Participants will have an opportunity to share stories, traditions, and memories, and to dedicate an offering to someone they have lost.

Bea Yeh will introduce the tradition of Hungry Ghost and lead us in making an offering to the dead. Weโ€™ll set places at our table for those who are no longer with us and share food as an act of remembrance and connection.

Our community offerings and tributes will be gathered at Ximena Moralesโ€™s altar, creating a shared space of remembrance that connects the different traditions and offerings brought into the room.

Throughout the evening, weโ€™ll create something together through words, offerings, and remembrance. Weโ€™ll dedicate a community poem to the dead and close our gathering with a collective ritual of words, sound, and stillness.

Please bring:

  • A dish to share, plus any serving utensils it needs. Consider bringing something that reminds you of a loved one or connects you to a family or cultural tradition.
  • Please label your food with a card identifying any allergens or dietary considerations.
  • Your own dinnerware (plate, bowl, utensils, napkin).
  • A beverage for yourself, if youโ€™d like something other than water.
  • A photograph, name, or other small tribute to a loved one for the community altar, if youโ€™d like.
  • Please do not bring chips, salsa, or guacamoleโ€”Milagro will provide these.

The Portland Grief House is honored to continue this tradition, originally started by Side Yard Farm. El Centro Milagro is excited to partner with Portland Grief House to create a space for English- and Spanish-speaking community members to gather, remember, share traditions, and honor the dead together.

Tea Ceremony Workshop: Learn the Role of the Guest with Jan Waldmann

Portland Japanese Gardenโ€™s Tea Ceremony Workshop offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the traditional practice of Chanoyu, or the Way of Tea. Experience the art of tranquility, mindfulness, and omotenashi, whole-hearted hospitality.

It is not an exaggeration to say that through tea, one can understand much of Japanese culture. Teaโ€™s influence can be found in many of the nationโ€™s most beloved artforms, including arranging flowers, calligraphy, incense, ceramics and lacquerware. Japanese gardens are also deeply intertwined with tea ceremony. The four principles of tea, wa (harmony), kei (respect), sei (purity), and jaku (tranquility), are explored by the gardeners of Portland Japanese Garden in their work every day.

Guided by skilled instructor Jan Waldmann, Sosui, the focus of this workshop is to learn to be a guest in the tea ceremony, an important aspect to this historic tradition. Participants will learn the proper etiquette for attending a tea ceremony, including how to receive and consume sweets and matcha, and most importantly, the reasons behind each of the steps. Additionally, you will gain insight into what it entails to be a hostโ€” understanding the occasion and seasonality, attention to aesthetics, careful preparation, and the thoughtful gestures made toward the guests.

Participants will first attend a presentation of tea ceremony in our Cathy Rudd Cultural Corner alongside visitors to the Garden before they are taken into their exclusive workshop in the Yanai Classroom.

Participants will first attend a presentation of tea ceremony in our Cathy Rudd Cultural Corner alongside visitors to the Garden (2:00-2:30pm) before they are taken into their exclusive workshop in the Yanai Family Classroom (2:45-4:15pm).

No previous experience is needed. Students will sit in a chair at a table, not kneeling on a tatami mat.

Urasenke Konnichian of Kyoto is one of the major establishments within Japan that has preserved the tradition of Chado or the Way of Tea.โ€ฏ From the first Urasenke generation, Sen no Rikyu (1522-91) to the current headmaster Zabosai Genmoku Soshitsu XVI (b.1956 -), the Sen family lineage has devoted great effort to fostering the philosophy of Tea through the simple words of Wa โ€“ Harmony, Kei -Repect, Sei โ€“ Purity & Jaku โ€“ Tranquility. Over the years Urasenke has established connections in over 21 cities worldwide.

Tire Rack Street Survival - Portland OR

At Portland International Raceway in Portland, Tire Rack Street Survival offers practical, hands-on driver training for teens that focuses on car control, smart decision making, quicker reactions, and increased awareness of other drivers. Students practice in their own cars with a coach to explore handling limits and build real-world skills that support safer driving. The day blends classroom learning with extensive seat time. Across roughly two hours split into three classroom sessions, students cover proper seating and hand position, mirror setup, how tire contact patches and weight transfer influence grip, using long-range vision, and overall situational awareness. Common distractions such as music, phones, and carrying multiple passengers are addressed. Most of the day is spent behind the wheel working through scenarios that mirror everyday hazards. Depending on space and conditions, activities can include skid recovery on a wetted surface, quick lane-change maneuvers to avoid obstacles, hard braking with ABS practice, a slalom to feel weight transfer, recovering when two wheels leave the pavement, and maintaining safe following distances. When possible, a semi-truck blind spot demonstration shows how many nearby vehicles disappear from view inside the cab, and an airbag deployment demo reinforces safe hand placement. Parents are encouraged to spend the day with their student. They may sit in on the classroom portions, and instructors are available throughout to answer questions about the exercises. Lunch is provided for students, parents, and volunteers, with additional educational demos during the break. The course fee is $175.

The Teen Table

The Teen Table is a relaxed, hands-on cooking experience for teens who want to feel more comfortable in the kitchen, learn to cook for themselves, and spend time with other teens who enjoy good food.

Whether theyโ€™re brand new to cooking or already have some experience, weโ€™ll focus on building practical skills and confidence. Rather than following strict recipes, teens will learn how to think like a home cookโ€”how to make decisions, work with what they have, adjust as they go, and turn simple ingredients into food theyโ€™re excited to eat.

Weโ€™ll also cover meal planning, kitchen organization, time management, using ingredients thoughtfully, making adjustments, and cleaning up. Most importantly, teens will gain the confidence to cook without needing a recipe to tell them exactly what to do.

Every class ends with everyone sitting down together to enjoy what weโ€™ve madeโ€”because cooking is more fun when itโ€™s shared, and learning how to feed yourself well is a pretty great skill to have.

The goal is simple: to help teens feel at home in the kitchen, make food they enjoy, and learn how to take care of themselves through cooking.

November Menu:

  • Herb Roasted Chicken

  • Seasonal Vegetable Sides

December Menu:

  • Veggie Chili

  • Cornbread

What to expect:

  • Price is per person and includes the class, all ingredients, and dinner.

  • Each class is hands-on and centered around preparing a meal together. Weโ€™ll cook, talk, experiment, ask questions, make mistakes, and figure things out along the way. Thereโ€™s no pressure to already know what youโ€™re doing or to be a โ€œchefโ€โ€” just a welcoming space to learn at your own pace.

  • Some food allergies and intolerances can be accommodated, but please note that we may cook with eggs, dairy, nuts, poultry, beef, pork, and fish. If youโ€™re unsure whether the class will be a good fit for your dietary needs, please inquire before registering.

  • This series is for kids aged 13-18

About our Instructor:

Chef Leta Merrill is the founder and Pasta Maia, a seasoned culinary instructor, and also a mom of teens. She loves cooking with families and teaching young cooks in a fun, hands-on environment. Inspired by the Cucina Povera philosophy of simple, resourceful cooking made with love, Leta brings old-world Italian warmth and a love of gathering around the table to every class.

The Portland Pollinator Harvest Party

133 Southeast Salmon Street133 SE Salmon St

Have you ever wondered what the difference is between a native bee and a honey bee? Or wondered what they do all day? Have you dreamed of becoming a beekeeper, wanted to plant more flowers for our winged friends, or wished you could taste honey fresh from the comb? Well, this is the event for you.

Join Bee The Change Landcare for a morning of bee-loving curiosity, hands-on learning, and community connection, alongside some wonderful local educators, makers, and pollinator enthusiasts. Bees are woven into so much of everyday life, from the fruit on the table to the flowers blooming along the sidewalks. Yet there is so much happening in their little worlds that people rarely get to see. Peek into those worlds, explore what it means to be in a reciprocal relationship with bees, and learn how we can cultivate more resilient gardens, ecosystems, and food systems for pollinators and people.

  • Discover the difference between native and honeybees and how planting flowers, food, and habitat can support healthy pollinator populations right in your own neighborhood
  • Get your hands into the world of native bees. Join Bee The Change and Portland Fruit Tree Project for a community Mason bee cocoon harvest. Learn how to safely harvest, clean, and store cocoons so the next generation is ready for spring.
  • Taste the sweetness of the season. Join Bee The Change and Bee Built for a freshly crushed honeycomb demonstration, honey tasting, and conversation about thoughtful honey bee stewardship.
  • Meet your local pollinator community. Explore beautiful bee houses and hives from Bee Built, preserves and opportunities to get involved with Portland Fruit Tree Project, garden signs from Sharotonin Signs, and local honey and stewardship opportunities from Bee The Change.

Have a Mason bee house at home? Bring your filled nesting reeds or trays for harvest. No bee house? No problem. Come learn, get your hands a little sticky, and make some new bee-loving friends

Slow Shapes & Softening for Creative Joy

Emily Wright

Join Emily Wright for a special offering that will weave together gentle postures, meditation and creative practice to unwind tension, tend to fatigue, and brighten intuitive, creative force. The practice will include yin yoga, yoga nidra, and a lightly guided, silent painting meditation. All levels and backgrounds are welcome.

$25 โ€“ the practice + all creative supplies

$55 โ€“ the practice, all creative supplies + a bottle of fine, natural scent, 5 ml roll-on. This special scent crafted by artist Catherine Haley Epstein blends natural, high-quality extracts of cedar, violet and apricot for a light, peace-inspiring aroma. A lovely add on to any restorative or creative practice.

The practice of Yoga Nidra is thousands of years old yet immensely relevant to our time. A systematic process of deliberate relaxation that combines breath, body-scan and imagery-based techniques to serve as a powerful antidote to overstimulation, burnout and exhaustion.

Yoga Nidra is an accessible go-to practice in any wellness toolkit for sharpening cognition, bolstering creativity and promoting a healthy response to stress. Through a 20-minute practice, studies have shown that it improves neuroplasticity, resets dopamine levels and supports healthy central nervous system regulation.

Additionally, its ancient wisdom undeniably invites in a deeper knowing of the soul. This more spiritual angle empowers a release of fear and unwanted habits and enables new alignment to authenticity, freedom and heart.
