Chien-Kim-Watkins Trio: Smetana and Dvořák

In their CMNW debut in 2024, the Chien-Kim-Watkins Trio brought enthusiastic audiences to their feet with their monumental performance of Beethoven’s complete Piano Trio Cycle–so epic that it spanned three concerts. This season, they are sure to thrill us once again! This trio comprises some of classical music’s most highly esteemed artists performing today: CMNW Artistic Director's pianist Gloria Chien and violinist Soovin Kim with cellist Paul Watkins (formerly of the Emerson Quartet). The trio will present two of chamber music’s most thrilling, Bohemian-inspired masterpieces, including Smetana’s lushly romantic Piano Trio in G Minor and Dvořák’s richly expressive Piano Trio in F Minor, which is widely regarded as his most “Brahmsian” masterpiece.

“…the musicians had to switch from very soft to very loud at the drop of a dime. Their lightning-fast reactions – always in sync with each other – reminded me of gifted athletes in highlight reels doing spectacular things. I sat just a few feet from Watkins and was constantly astounded by his quick fingers.”

For the Birds

In partnership with Bird Alliance of Oregon, For the Birds invites audiences to reconsider music—and the relationship with the natural world. What can be learned when listening beyond the human voice?

Featuring Resonance’s 2026–27 commissioning composer, Judy A. Rose; wildlife photography by naturalist Ethan Allred; and Edie Hill’s poignant masterwork, Spectral Spirits, a tribute to endangered and extinct birds, the program explores birdsong, migration, and the fragile interconnectedness between humans and the ecosystem.

Works by Caroline Shaw and other composers expand the conversation, bringing audiences into a musical world shaped by flight, habitat, loss, and wonder. Through music, photography, and collaboration with Bird Alliance of Oregon, For the Birds invites you to pay closer attention to the lives unfolding around you—and to consider what changes when you listen beyond yourself.

On This Land

Resonance is joined by Fear No Music and Las Matices Latin Ensemble for a powerful exploration of land, belonging, memory, and the stories carried by the places called home.

Kenji Bunch’s On This Land, commissioned by Resonance with text by Chisao Hata, reflects on Japanese American incarceration in the Pacific Northwest, connecting personal memory with a history that continues to shape the region. Alongside Freddy Vilches’s Abya Yala, a multilingual suite created with Indigenous poets from across the Americas, and Shruthi Rajasekar’s Whose Names Are Unknown, the program brings together distinct histories and voices to explore displacement, belonging, and the complicated relationship between people and place.

What does the land remember?
