Dr. Katharine Hayhoe: Climate Action & Conversation Across Divides
Called “one of the nation’s most effective communicators on climate change” by The New York Times, Dr. Katharine Hayhoe, chief scientist for The Nature Conservancy, has an uncanny ability to navigate all sides of the conversation on climate. With a singular balance of scientific rigor and storytelling, patience and empathy, and an abiding adherence to her faith, Hayhoe is often able to reach audiences that other climate scientists have not been able to reach —demonstrating that by finding shared values we can better connect our unique identities to collective action.
WorldOregon welcomes Katharine Hayhoe back to Portland for this rich conversation exploring how to incorporate climate change into both our public decisions and private conversations at a moment of urgency when climate action and environmental policy are at a crossroads. About the Speaker
Dr. Katharine Hayhoe is an atmospheric scientist whose work bridges climate science, risks, and resilience. As Chief Scientist for The Nature Conservancy (TNC), she directs the organization’s global scientific strategy and leads a global community of more than 1,000 TNC scientists and science staff whose work underpins every aspect of TNC’s mission: from conserving lands and waters to developing scalable, science-based solutions to the biodiversity and climate crises.
Recognized among TIME’s “100 Most Influential People” and a United Nations Champion of the Earth, Katharine is known worldwide for her ability to make complex science accessible and meaningful, and for connecting climate and nature to people’s values in ways that inspire action. Hayhoe is the Endowed Professor in Public Policy and Public Law and Paul W. Horn Distinguished Professor at Texas Tech University and author of Saving Us: A Climate Scientist’s Case for Hope and Healing in a Divided World. Read more. Sponsored by the M.J. Chris Smither
Born in Miami, during World War II, Chris Smither grew up in New Orleans where he first started playing music as a child. The son of a Tulane University professor, he was taught the rudiments of instrumentation by his uncle on his mother’s ukulele. “Uncle Howard,” Smither says, “showed me that if you knew three chords, you could play a lot of the songs you heard on the radio. And if you knew four chords, you could pretty much rule the world.” With that bit of knowledge under his belt, he was hooked. “I’d loved acoustic music – specifically the blues – ever since I first heard Lightnin’ Hopkins’ Blues In My Bottle album. I couldn’t believe the sound Hopkins got. At first I thought it was two guys playing guitar. My style, to a degree, came out of trying to imitate that sound I heard.”
The 20th release, All About the Bones (release date: May 3, 2024 on Signature Sounds/Mighty Albert, distributed by Redeye) is as elemental as the inky black shadows cast by a shockingly bright moon. Featuring eight brand new Chris Smither songs and Smither renditions of Eliza Gilkyson’s “Calm Before the Storm” and also Tom Petty’s “Time to Move On”, the listener is welcomed into some gothic mansion on an imaginary New Orleans street, and there in the lamplit parlor confronts the band, a minimalist skeleton crew: Smither’s inimitable propulsive guitar and rumbling baritone are joined seamlessly to producer David Goodrich’s carpetbag of instruments, Zak Trojano’s rock-steady, primal drumming, BettySoo’s diaphanous harmony vocals, and the flat, mournful flood of Jazz legend Chris Cheek’s saxophone. Recorded at Sonelab Studios in Easthampton MA by Justin Pizzoferrato All About the Bones has a feel that is somehow baroque and austere at once. In 2026, the independent film The Singers, in which Chris made his acting debut, won the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short. Directed by Sam Davis, Chris joined producer Jack Piatt and fellow cast members at the Oscars to celebrate. Minors ok with parent/guardian Review our venue FAQ here ALL SALES ARE FINAL. Science On Tap – Save the Planet: Recycle! …or Not?
Few conservation behaviors have captured the public’s interest as much as recycling. But sorting your trash and placing it at the curb isn’t recycling . . . it’s just the start of a long and somewhat surprising journey for your empty milk cartons and back issues of Cat Fancy.
- Where do those materials go once in the bin?
- How do they get sorted out? And where do they go from there?
- What about those rumors that recycling trucks just deliver materials to the landfill, or dump them in the ocean?
- How can recycling even deliver environmental benefit, given all of the trucks and machinery involved?
- What’s the deal with plastic, anyway?
You have questions, and we have answers!
After pioneering recycling policy in the late 1980s, Oregon is now implementing the first “extended producer responsibility” law for packaging in the U.S. The Plastic Pollution and Recycling Modernization Act, adopted in 2021, was launched July 1, 2025 and is designed to provide residents and businesses a recycling system that can be trusted to deliver the environmental benefits that recycling has long promised. But even a fully modernized recycling system has limited potential to stem the tide of unsustainable levels of production and consumption.
Explore how recycling is simultaneously necessary and insufficient, how recycling needs to be improved, and what else Oregon could be doing to use materials sustainably.
David Allaway and Justin Gast work at the OR Department of Environmental Quality, and between them have over 57 years of experience with recycling systems. In addition to his time at DEQ, Justin has worked at the local and national levels for the likes of Resource Recycling magazine, the Washington County (OR) Solid Waste & Recycling Program and The Recycling Partnership. David has testified before Congress and co-chaired Oregon’s Recycling Steering Committee, and his work has been featured in Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, the National Law Review, Time, Sierra and PBS Frontline.

Rizo & Making Movies
The New York Times once referred to Rizo as “SENSATIONAL… A fierce but kindhearted fusion of comedy, burlesque, performance art, and rock ‘n’ roll.” Taking a cue from Piaf, Rizo (né Amelia Zirin-Brown) fully embraces the role of chanteuse. In recordings, she is a mysterious figure, a siren ushering you through tableaus of heartbreak, lust, and the murkiness in between. Live, she is an eyeful. An international cult favorite, her stage shows bring her powerhouse vocals together with seductive storytelling and wild hilarious audience experiments. Rizo is a provocateur with an electric wit, and has been called a “diva par excellence” by The Guardian. In the studio she has collaborated with Moby, Reggie Watts, and Yo-Yo Ma; whose album Songs of Joy & Peace, which features Rizo, won a Grammy Award. Rizo has also received a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, a Time Out London theater award, and a London Cabaret Award. Rizo recently starred in the role of Madame Zinzanni in the revival of the much beloved Teatro ZinZanni and is in development for a television project with Michael Carbonaro of the popular series “The Carbonaro Effect.” Making Movies:
Founded by Enrique Chi—a songwriter, musician, filmmaker, and activist—the Latin Grammy-nominated Making Movies serves as the primary platform for Chi’s creative mission. Rooted in the rich traditions of Panamá, a crisol de razas, the band’s sound is an embodiment of those diverse cultures, offering listeners a unique experience that feels both extraordinary and familiar. Described by NPR as “Perhaps one of the most unique groups around today, Making Movies is sensual, smoky, and seductive.” The band’s accomplishments include collaborations with legendary artists like Rubén Blades, performances at major international festivals, and tours with notable acts such as Los Lobos, Ozomatli, Hurray For the Riff Raff, Las Cafeteras, and Flor De Toloache. Chi is also producing AMERI’KANA TV, a National Endowment for the Arts-funded documentary series that explores an alternate history of American music, continuing their mission to inspire and educate. Their next studio album is set to be released in early 2025.
The band is committed to representing their mixed identity of Black and Latino culture and has been a vocal influence in the national health conversation around music as medicine. (For more and other community impact projects, see the group’s nonprofit Art As Mentorship). ALL SALES ARE FINAL. PLEASE, DOUBLE CHECK YOUR ORDER BEFORE PURCHASING. NO REFUNDS.

Fernando Viciconte – The Lucky House Album Release
Fernando Viciconte has a rich history in the celebrated Portland music scene. For three decades he has churned out musical missives full of straightforward confessionals, mystical pop reveries and beaten-down drunken laments that have been cherished by the many music fans of the Great Northwest and beyond. He has returned with The Lucky House, recorded by his longtime collaborator, acclaimed producer and songwriter Luther Russell. This time, the writing is somehow bleaker and more shot-through with sorrow than ever before. Armed with his nylon-stringed guitar and reunited with his old compadre in an undisclosed Portland basement studio, Viciconte has crafted a stunning slice of heartland rock that alternates between the Suicide-inflected desolation of 80’s-era Springsteen, the dusty 60’s Tex-Mex garage-rock of Doug Sahm and the lonesome wail of Sun-era Elvis. The rare magnificence of Fernando’s unique set of pipes is on full display here, seared to analog tape through a tube desk specially designed by Russell and on its maiden run for Viciconte’s eleventh studio album.

Thank You!Consider This with Rukaiyah Adams
for an onstage conversation with Rukaiyah Adams, president and CEO of the 1803 Fund. As the leader of this ambitious new foundation, which seeks to rebuild Portland’s Albina neighborhood and advance the wealth and wellbeing of Black Portland, Adams requires a lot of trust: both trust from supporters that she will responsibly oversee a major investment in urban infrastructure, and trust from the community that her efforts to reshape a central part of the city will benefit the public. As former chief investment officer at Meyer Memorial trust, Adams also oversaw a different kind of trust, managing approximately $1 billion in assets for one of the state’s largest charitable foundations.
The conversation will take place at the Alberta Rose Theatre in Portland (3000 SE Alberta St.) at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 16, 2027. The event is part of our 2026–27 Consider This series, What Do We Trust?
About our guestSince January 2023, Rukaiyah Adams has served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the 1803 Fund, an innovative organization dedicated to growing shared prosperity.
