THE THREE FROM THE GAS STATION (1930) (Church of Film)
Three friends return from a three month sojourn to find that an economic downturn has robbed them all of their fortunes. Undaunted, the three of them decide to open a gas station and try their hand at manual labor. When a beautiful woman appears at the station, the three of them eagerly vie for her attention, but only one of them can win her heart. THE THREE FROM THE GAS STATION was one of the best films produced by the legendary film duo of Willy Fritsch and Lilian Harvey. Brimming with charm, humor, and those familiar Weimar tropes of gender play and role reversal, it stands as a wondrous monument to an irreverent culture in the midst of catastrophic change.
Silents on 16mm: Camera Magic
One of the very first filmmakers, Georges Méliès, started out as a stage magician. His hugely influential style, filled with special effects and fantastical narratives, has a clear magic show sensibility. From Méliès on, much of early cinema was pure showmanship. Audiences were drawn in by anything flashy, shocking, and unfamiliar. This program celebrates that spirit of breathless innovation with a selection of films selected from the Nyback Archive, including voyages to other worlds, surrealist visions, and stop-motion taxidermy, all on 16mm with accompanying musical curation by Ross Tidwell.
This is a companion piece to The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari on Friday, Nov. 6—enjoy both nights for only $15!
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari on 16mm
Francis, a young man, recalls in his memory the horrible experiences he and his fiancée Jane recently went through. Francis and his friend Alan visit The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, an exhibit where the mysterious doctor shows the somnambulist Cesare, and awakens him for some moments from his death-like sleep.
Presented by Astral Projections on 16mm film, enjoy this early horror masterpiece with, humbly, the best synchronized score ever discovered. The otherworldly tones, played on vinyl, transform Caligari into a science-fiction experience unlike any other. You’ve never seen Caligari like this, and you never will again. Roadless
Three adventurers set out on foot in the Alaskan wilderness to follow the 211-mile length of the proposed Ambler Mining Road. Crossing vast tundra, wild rivers, and pristine forests, the team brings audiences directly into one of the most remote and ecologically intact landscapes in North America.
160 miles north of the Arctic Circle; as the miles accumulate, so do the challenges—injuries, exhaustion, hunger, relentless mosquitoes, and the harsh reality of traveling challenging terrain without roads or trails. But the team also reveals a landscape few people will ever experience firsthand. Encounters with wildlife, experiencing 24-hour sunlight, and the vast Arctic ecosystem offer a glimpse into a remarkable environment that has remained untouched by human development.
Roadless takes viewers on an adventure of endurance, and natural beauty while exploring what could be lost if the Ambler Road is built.
Asphalt
Gustav Frahlich, best known as the young protagonist of METROPOLIS, stars as Holk, a strait-laced traffic cop who has the simple task of escorting a diamond thief to the police station. However, the thief is the exotic and beautiful Else (played by Betty Amann), which makes the task far from simple. The stage is thus set for a scandalous turn of events, and the drama is made all the more exciting thanks to the dynamic photography of Ganther Rittau (THE BLUE ANGEL) and the equally impressive sets of Erich Kettelhut (METROPOLIS).

Just Eat It: A Food Waste Story
What happens to all the food we grow but never eat? And what can we do to change that?
Join Slow Food Portland for a special screening, followed by a community conversation exploring food waste and the local efforts working to address it.
In this thought-provoking documentary, filmmakers Jen Rustemeyer and Grant Baldwin challenge themselves to live for six months on food that would otherwise be thrown away. Along the way, they uncover the staggering amount of perfectly edible food wasted across our food system and the environmental, social, and economic consequences.
Following the film, we’ll bring together local panelists working in food recovery, sustainability, and food systems to discuss what’s happening here in Portland and how we can create a less wasteful, more equitable food system.
Whether you’re passionate about food justice, sustainability, or simply curious about reducing food waste, we hope you’ll join us for an evening of film, conversation, and community.

I BY DAY YOU BY NIGHT (1932) (Church of Film)

I BY DAY, YOU BY NIGHT is one of the Weimar era’s most artfully crafted musical comedies, winking and taunting the conservative order about to sweep over Germany. It’s also a salty satire on the unrealistic and frothy musical genre in the wake of the hardships of the working class in the 30s.

Another Annette Bening Mug
Inspired by George Kuchar’s holiday tradition, ANOTHER ANNETTE BENING MUG is equal parts docudrama, absurdist POV cinema, and video diary.

This is personal cinema: a time capsule and a tribute to my cat Fox, my movie-loving friends, the film community here in Portland, and the actresses I love — as we celebrate Xmas, New Year’s, Valentine’s Day, my 10-year sober anniversary, the 50th anniversary of a cinema goddess’s beloved classic, and a tour of Celebration from a pop icon — with Annette Bening’s Oscar campaign as its political backdrop.

The award-winning Cosmic Heirloom: Buried 400 Years, selected for screening at this year’s Eastern Oregon Film Festival, examines the long and mysterious history of psilocybin. The series will also feature musicians performing a live score to excerpts from Dziga Vertov’s 1929 silent documentary Man with a Movie Camera.
The route connects three distinct creative communities: Bend’s brewery culture and volcanic landscapes; Seattle’s music history and independent arts scene; and Portland’s neighborhood theaters, record stores and small stages. Clinton Street Theater, which opened in 1915, carries that community tradition into the winter stop.
