Using the backdrop of seasonal changes at Hoyt Arboretum, Dr. Kiki Sanford will facilitate discovery of the many ways it is connected to its avian inhabitants. Winter classes will center on adaptations for surviving intense seasonal conditions. Spring brings the frenzy of breeding season. Summer includes juvenile development and the onset of the next annual cycle. And, Autumn classes will focus on the fall migration. Each seasonal class will highlight the various birds present in the Arboretum, and include observation & discussion of specific aspects of how their brains & bodies lead to certain behaviors useful in the Hoyt habitats. Short informal lectures and group discussions will be followed by exploratory bird-watching hikes to observe these processes in action. Please register through the Hoyt Arboretum website. — 40

Lookout Landscape
Lookout Landscape explores the iconic lookout tower, trail culture, and backcountry gear as a means to explore the rich (and sometimes conflicting) relationships between the “working forests” and the people that call them home. Wildfire, and other landscape disturbances (both manmade and natural) provide a timely context for Borden’s playful, yet critical, approach to environmental understanding. The wildfire-inspired work will explore diverse cultural narratives of Pacific Northwest forests through installation art, architectural design, material culture, and interdisciplinary science- communication at the intersection of culture and forest ecology. This exhibition is included with museum admission.
Conifer Identification: Science and Stroll
Evergreen doesn’t mean identical! Hoyt Arbroetum’s renowned conifer collection makes it the perfect classroom for learning to tell our Northwest conifers apart – by needle, cone, bark, and habit – with stories of the redwoods, cedars, and true firs along the way. This program will be outdoors rain or shine. Plan for a moderate walk on maintained, dirt trails. — 35

Botanical Illustration: Hoyt's Herbarium Collection Comes to Life
Join Brett Rousseau as she leads you through the journey of creating watercolor botanical illustrations based on HoytArboretum’s very own herbarium collection. We will use herbarium “vouchers” (plant samples that are pressed, dried, and mounted for cataloging Hoyt’s collection) as our muse. We will capture their leaves, stems, flowers, and fruits with our imagination and paint brush. This is a great stepping stone to painting plants from life. — 55
