A Star of the Portuguese Baroque: The Life and Work of Josefa de Óbidos

Join us for a lecture by Jordan Schnitzer School of Art + Art History + Design faculty member Carmen Ripollés, Professor of Art History, for a talk on her book, Josefa de Óbidos, which explores the life and work of one of the most influential artists of the Portuguese Baroque.

Drawing on years of research, Ripollés reexamines Josefa de Óbidos' remarkable career, revealing how she achieved extraordinary artistic and professional success in the 17th century while challenging traditional assumptions about women artists. The talk will offer new perspectives on Baroque art, women's history, and the enduring legacy of an artist whose work continues to reshape our understanding of the early modern Iberian world.
