We are grateful to these tribes and their descendants for being the original and continuing stewards of these spaces, and encourage everyone to go beyond a land acknowledgment by supporting Indigenous communities and organizations in your area.

ACCOMMODATION REQUESTS: TKO seeks to make our events inclusive of people of all backgrounds and abilities. If you would like to discuss potential accommodations to allow for your participation in this event, please click here to complete a short Google survey. TKO staff will then contact you to discuss options. Please note: available accommodations will vary by event and typically need to be requested a minimum of two weeks in advance. EQUITY & INCLUSION: TKO seeks to make Oregon’s trails a place where people can go to connect with nature & one another. Not everyone feels safe or welcome in the outdoors due to issues like racism, bias, and hate. We commit to being part of the solution to this problem and to enact change. Conduct, speech, or expressions that target any individual or group will not be tolerated by TKO.

PERSONAL SAFETY: Your physical and emotional safety is our number one priority. If a person’s actions or comments make you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, you may: interrupt directly, tell a crew leader, and/or inform TKO staff via the post-event survey.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: TKO recognizes that the trails we work on travel through the traditional lands of many Indigenous tribes and communities. We are the most recent in a long line of stewards to this land, and it is our responsibility to do so with humility and respect.

If you have any questions, reach out to us by clicking Contact near the bottom of this page.

Eagle Fern County Park–PDX (trail rehabilitation)

Join us as we do rehabilitation on a lightly used trail at Eagle Fern Park in Clackamas County Crew Leader: Pat K., Elaine K. Max Size of Crew: 12 Hike Distance: mile(s) 1 mile Elevation Gain: 300 Hike Intensity: Moderate Work Intensity: Moderate Work Type: tread rehabilitation, building new switchbacks

Project Information:

This trail at Eagle Fern park is across the road from the main body of the park, and has been very lightly used over the years, and poorly maintained. There are several switchbacks that need to be extended to decrease grade on the trail, and much tread reheabilitation needs to be done. There are several logs on the trail that need to be cut and removed.

Hiking information:

The trail is about half a mile in length. We’ll start at the trailhead and gradually work our way to the top. It is steep in some areas and the tread is uneven and in poor conditon at this time, as we begin this project.

You should plan to participate in this trail party for its entirety. For safety reasons, please do not arrive late or expect to be able to leave early.

Event details:

Detailed event information, including directions to the meeting location, will be provided to registrants via email 48 hours prior to the event. If you’re volunteering for the first time, read this blog by a volunteer to know what to expect at your first trail party.

What to bring:

  • Plenty of water
  • Snacks/lunch
  • Work gloves if you have them (loaner gloves available)
  • Any medications or emergency supplies you may need
  • Sunscreen + insect repellent
  • A pack to bring all of this with you on trail

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: TKO recognizes that the trails we work on travel through the traditional lands of many Indigenous tribes and communities. We are the most recent in a long line of stewards to this land, and it is our responsibility to do so with humility and respect.

If you have any questions, reach out to us by clicking Contact near the bottom of this page.

While TKO no longer requires masking/vaccination for our events, we do support those who choose to mask for their own safety. We ask participants to respect the health of folks who wear masks by distancing or wearing a mask while in close proximity.

Willow Planting on Mt Hood National Forest

Hurry up and secure a spot for our willow planting on Mt. Hood!

Among the many things we survey for on our beaver habitat survey field days, woody food is among the most important. While beavers eat a lot of herbaceous food during the summer, woody food is always an important part of their diet particularly in the winter when herbaceous foods are less available. They’ll often store fresh branches in front of their lodge so they can munch easily without going too far from home. Without this woody food, they’re less likely to survive and thrive during the harsh cold months.

Many of our survey sites are lacking beavers favorite woody food species- willow. If we can bring willow back to these areas, we greatly increase not only the habitat suitability for beavers but may find that beavers find their way back to the areas on their own!

Everyone is welcome and no experience necessary! Our willow planting days will be moderate to high physical activity days with plenty of stepping over logs, wading into wetland areas and carrying tools and heavy bundles of willow stakes. For each willow stake, we will use a piece of rebar to make a small hole in the ground and then stick our willow stake into the hole. This is not only super easy and efficient but disturbs the soil as little as possible.

We will all meet at Gateway/NE 99th Ave. at 9 am. Make sure to meet us at the entrance to the parking garage on NE Multnomah! From there we will coordinate carpooling to our secondary location. If you would prefer to meet us at the secondary location, please email [email protected] ahead of time. At the secondary location, I will share the coordinates for our final destination, and we will caravan together to the site. At the final site, we will share safety info, talk about the site and the plan for the day and then head into the field for some willow planting! While in the field, we will stop frequently for breaks, water, snacks and lunch. We will work for approximately 4 hours and return in time to be at the Gateway/99th Ave. Park and Ride between 5 and 6pm.

Bring: Warm layers, rain gear, water, snacks/lunch you can eat in the field and dry clothing/footwear for the drive home. We will supply rubber boots and waders (limited sizes so register early!), work gloves, and tools. If you have your own gloves and/or pruners, please bring them!

Questions? Please email [email protected]!
