This Mushroom Identification class is designed to help you build confidence in recognizing common fungi in their natural habitat while deepening your understanding of mushroom characteristics, seasonal patterns, and safe foraging practices.

Pruning pines to achieve the look they have in spaces like Portland Japanese Garden requires meticulous care and years of learning. In this demonstration, Pete Putnicki, Japanese Pruning Specialist and former Senior Gardener at Seattle Japanese Garden, will discuss the maintenance of pine trees.

This program will start with a tour of the Garden focusing on pine trees, followed by a lecture and demonstration. The demonstration will focus on candling, needling, growth regulation, and pruning techniques. Participants will have a chance to experience pine needling themselves with an instructor guiding them along the way.

This one-day demonstration is limited to 15 participants.

Participants should bring their own lunch, a reusable drinking cup or water bottle.

Transformation in Nature with Clara-Julia Peru

We invite you to join our transformation in nature retreat to slow down from your daily life, capture moments in nature, reflect and resonate with the seasonal changes that surround us.

Participants will begin with self-reflective prompts before embarking on a slow, guided walk, where they will be invited to observe and capture with a camera (or cell phone) how the late autumn garden mirrors the landscapes of transformation, grief and transition.

The seasonal landscape itself becomes a teacher: the architectural presence of conifers standing among bare deciduous trees, the rich layers of fallen leaves returning to the soil, beavers preparing for winter, eagles tending their nests, seed pods, mosses, textures, changing light, and the quiet beauty that emerges when life appears stripped down to its essence.

Through mindful photographs, participants will gather visual "fragments" before coming together in a circle for creative reflection, gentle conversation, and complementary herbal teas. The intention is to cultivate presence, symbolism, and a compassionate way of witnessing both nature and ourselves.

Bring comfortable walking shoes, weather-appropriate layers, drinking water, optional snack, camera or cell phone. If using a cell phone camera, be sure that the sound is off.

Project Information:

We’ll work to clear this remote trail of brush, logs and other debris, and improve tread where needed.

Hiking information:

We’ll drive to the top of Horsetail Creek Trail and work our way down. The first few work days won’t involve much hiking, but the hike will become longer as we work toward the Bell Creek junction.

You should plan to participate in this trail party for its entirety. For safety reasons, please do not arrive late or expect to be able to leave early.

Join Columbia Slough Watershed Council and Bird Guide Ryan Gilpin, from Nidus Consulting for a morning of Birding at Blue Lake Regional Park. Explore the beautiful Blue Lake and discover what birds may be flying, as we walk and practice identifying birds! This is a rain or shine event. All ages are welcome. Participants under the age of 18, will need to be accompanied by a parent, adult, or legal guardian.

What to bring: Dress for the weather and bring water. Snacks and drinks will be available. We will have extra binoculars. Bring yours, if you have them! Dogs are not allowed in this park because they can damage sensitive habitat and threaten wildlife.

Getting there:

See map below for meeting point and ideal parking location, circled in red. We will meet at Celilo Shelter. Metro kindly reserved this shelter for us from 9am-11am.

Metro has also granted us with 15 parking passes, free of charge. These passes are reserved on a first come, first serve basis. If you reserved a parking pass ticket - once you have arrived, drive past the kiosk, and check in with Liz at the welcome table to claim your pass. All passes need to be displayed in your windshield of your vehicle. Please attempt to carpool.

Parking passes are $5 per car, and can be purchased at Blue Lake. If you would like to attend and seeking no barrier to entry, please reach out.

By Bus: Take Bus line 21 to NE Sandy & 223rd, then walk about 1 mile up 223rd to Blue Lake Park.

By bike: Use bike lanes east on Marine Drive to Blue Lake Road or east on Halsey to 223rd Avenue and follow the signs north to the park. Bicycles are welcome inside the park on paved paths.

Accessibility:

There are a couple of restrooms and water fountains located inside the park. The route will have mostly paved, flat trails with little gravel.

This is a new volunteer orientated effort to bring the community together for litter cleanups and beautification projects of Esther Short Park and the surrounding area to help keep the neighborhood welcoming, clean, and vibrant.

Training, gloves, tools, water, and snacks will be provided. This opportunity is family-friendly and great for teens. Volunteers should dress for the weather and wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. Youth under 18 must bring a signed minor consent form.

Accessibility is important to us and we’ve taken it into account while planning this event. The park is wheelchair accessible, but some of the volunteer projects may not be. Work is primarily done in a quiet park with potential for some infrequent loud work sounds. Volunteers will need to do some light lifting and bending while picking up litter. There will be a space in the RSVP form for you to let us know if there are any accessibility needs you have so that we can do our best to find a volunteer role that will work for you.

Have you ever wondered how old the fish are out in our round ponds, or how the hatchery works? What temperature do you think the springwater is as it comes out of the ground? Find the answers to these questions and more on a tour of our unique historic hatchery!

Come along with knowledgeable Columbia Springs staff, or expert volunteer, as they trace the path of spring water through our unique site, and learn about the trout and salmon that grow up here along the way.

While all ages are welcome, tour content may be most engaging for older kids and adults.

Willow Planting on Mt Hood National Forest

Among the many things we survey for on our beaver habitat survey field days, woody food is among the most important. While beavers eat a lot of herbaceous food during the summer, woody food is always an important part of their diet particularly in the winter when herbaceous foods are less available. They’ll often store fresh branches in front of their lodge so they can munch easily without going too far from home. Without this woody food, they’re less likely to survive and thrive during the harsh cold months.

Many of our survey sites are lacking beavers favorite woody food species- willow. If we can bring willow back to these areas, we greatly increase not only the habitat suitability for beavers but may find that beavers find their way back to the areas on their own!

Everyone is welcome and no experience necessary! Our willow planting days will be moderate to high physical activity days with plenty of stepping over logs, wading into wetland areas and carrying tools and heavy bundles of willow stakes. For each willow stake, we will use a piece of rebar to make a small hole in the ground and then stick our willow stake into the hole. This is not only super easy and efficient but disturbs the soil as little as possible.

We will all meet at Gateway/NE 99th Ave. at 9 am. Make sure to meet us at the entrance to the parking garage on NE Multnomah! From there we will coordinate carpooling to our secondary location. If you would prefer to meet us at the secondary location, please email [email protected] ahead of time. At the secondary location, I will share the coordinates for our final destination, and we will caravan together to the site. At the final site, we will share safety info, talk about the site and the plan for the day and then head into the field for some willow planting! While in the field, we will stop frequently for breaks, water, snacks and lunch. We will work for approximately 4 hours and return in time to be at the Gateway/99th Ave. Park and Ride between 5 and 6pm.

Bring: Warm layers, rain gear, water, snacks/lunch you can eat in the field and dry clothing/footwear for the drive home. We will supply rubber boots and waders (limited sizes so register early!), work gloves, and tools. If you have your own gloves and/or pruners, please bring them!

About the Program Metro manages 20,000 acres of parks and natural areas, including 17 parks, 14 historic cemeteries and three boat ramps. By volunteering, you are helping steward and preserve nature at this site, for generations to come. Participants have the opportunity to learn about the site, local plants and fauna, while building community and restoring habitat for all. About the Project Join Metro Parks and Nature at Scouters Mountain Nature Park to plant native plants along the hiking trails. The trail that people will plant on is a short 10 minute hike down a nature trail. All tools and supplies provided, as well as some light refreshments. Brainy Birds: Fall

Birds are incredible and have adapted to survive in dynamic & changing environments. Every species has unique traits and sometimes quite specialized strategies. Using the backdrop of seasonal changes at Hoyt Arboretum, Dr. Kiki Sanford will facilitate discovery of the many ways it is connected to its avian inhabitants. Winter classes will center on adaptations for surviving intense seasonal conditions. Spring brings the frenzy of breeding season. Summer includes juvenile development and the onset of the next annual cycle. And, Autumn classes will focus on the fall migration. Each seasonal class will highlight the various birds present in the Arboretum, and include observation & discussion of specific aspects of how their brains & bodies lead to certain behaviors useful in the Hoyt habitats. We’ll be completing some maintenance on the popular Angel’s Rest Trail, including brushing with hand tools, light tread maintenance, and decommissioning areas where hikers are cutting switchbacks.

Hiking information:

This is a moderate hike with consistent elevation gain. We will hike from the Angel’s Rest Trailhead off of the historic highway and continue up about 1.6 miles before we get to the first area of work. After that, we will work as we hike, taking breaks as needed. The climb is about 1100 feet to our first work area and 1400 overall.

You should plan to participate in this trail party for its entirety. For safety reasons, please do not arrive late or expect to be able to leave early.

The trail is fairly accessible, being short and relatively flat. We don’t have good intel on where exactly the trail issues are, so we’ll plan on hiking the entire trail, unless I can get out and scout it ahead of time.

The trail is about half a mile in length. We’ll start at the trailhead and gradually work our way to the top. It is steep in some areas and the tread is uneven and in poor conditon at this time, as we begin this project.

Join PP&R and Forest Park Conservancy to help restore Forest Park. Volunteers will be hiking on the site and will be working on maintaining the trails in the park. Please dress for the weather, wear closed toed shoes, water and snacks. Tools, gloves, project instruction, snacks, hot drinks and hand warmers provided. There is a restroom on site.

We’ll be installing gabions to repair a collapsed trail section. Park staff will have brought the materials in close to the site to minimize hauling. We’ll excavate for three 3-foot gabions, fill them with rock, add a curb log, and secure the old railing post to the gabion.

Hiking information:

The hike to the project site is about 1/2 mile on well-maintained natural surface trail. There are some steep sections.

We’ll walk a short (1/4 mile) distance to our project area and work our way along the trail. Total hiking distance will be less than 2 miles over the course of the day.

Join Third Angle and World Forestry Center for an immersive All-Saints Day soundwalk to Witch’s Castle, featuring a spooky, site-specific soundscape created by local composer Bora Yoon. Hey all folks, for this one we will continue repairing the Rogue River Walk. We will use power and hand tools to remove vegetation from the trail corridor, dig trail tread, and remove logs across the trail.

Hiking information:

Expect to hike about a mile or two. The hike goes over some uneven and steep terrain, but it is not very strenuouse.

You should plan to participate in this trail party for its entirety. For safety reasons, please do not arrive late or expect to be able to leave early.

Ridgefield Main Street presents Sips of the Season, a downtown wine, cider, beer and spirits walk, from 3-7 p.m. Nov. 7. Guests can enjoy seasonal tastings at participating downtown Ridgefield businesses. Two ticket packages are available: five tastings for $25 or ten tastings for $45.
