Carpathian Pacific Express
Yankl Falk and the Carpathian-Pacific Express are neo-klezmer and beyond â which is to say, the music has a passport full of old-world Eastern European melodies and a tendency to miss the train on purpose. Klezmer and Yiddish song, mystical Hasidic chant, virtuosic Eastern European violin, and New Orleans roots all find their way aboard. There are dances, soulful turns, and musical moments that take a scenic detour in search of unexplored beauty.
At the front of this expedition, Jack âYanklâ Falk sings and plays clarinet with a lifetime of feeling in the sound. Andrew Ehrlichâs violin catches fire; Ralph Huntleyâs piano draws on a wide range of musical styles; Ji Tanzerâs drums keep the whole enterprise on point with precision and uncommon interpretive invention; and Courtney Von Drehleâs accordion and saxophone thread through the music with a few detours of their own. Five excellent musicians, one unusually well-traveled bandstand, and no particular reason to arrive where you expected.
Canto Con Orgullo: The Film Premiere
Enjoy A Voice of Her Own / Una Voz Propia, an evening of music, storytelling, and film celebrating the cultures, stories, and extraordinary talents that immigrants bring to the state and communitiesâand standing with them when they need support the most.
The evening will feature live music and storytelling by Gemanereida BarragĂĄn-CruzâMariachi Singer and Storyteller, and culminate in the world premiere of a new 15-minute documentary about her extraordinary artistic journey and the power of her voice.
More than a film screening, this is an evening to gather in community, experience music and stories live, and celebrate Gemanereida and the many ways immigrant artists enrich the cultural life of our community.
