Pine Pruning Demonstration

Pruning pines to achieve the look they have in spaces like Portland Japanese Garden requires meticulous care and years of learning. In this demonstration, Pete Putnicki, Japanese Pruning Specialist and former Senior Gardener at Seattle Japanese Garden, will discuss the maintenance of pine trees.

This program will start with a tour of the Garden focusing on pine trees, followed by a lecture and demonstration. The demonstration will focus on candling, needling, growth regulation, and pruning techniques. Participants will have a chance to experience pine needling themselves with an instructor guiding them along the way.

This one-day demonstration is limited to 15 participants.

Participants should bring their own lunch, a reusable drinking cup or water bottle.

Educational material will be provided.

Transformation in Nature with Clara-Julia Peru

We invite you to join our transformation in nature retreat to slow down from your daily life, capture moments in nature, reflect and resonate with the seasonal changes that surround us.

Participants will begin with self-reflective prompts before embarking on a slow, guided walk, where they will be invited to observe and capture with a camera (or cell phone) how the late autumn garden mirrors the landscapes of transformation, grief and transition.

The seasonal landscape itself becomes a teacher: the architectural presence of conifers standing among bare deciduous trees, the rich layers of fallen leaves returning to the soil, beavers preparing for winter, eagles tending their nests, seed pods, mosses, textures, changing light, and the quiet beauty that emerges when life appears stripped down to its essence.

Through mindful photographs, participants will gather visual "fragments" before coming together in a circle for creative reflection, gentle conversation, and complementary herbal teas. The intention is to cultivate presence, symbolism, and a compassionate way of witnessing both nature and ourselves.

Bring comfortable walking shoes, weather-appropriate layers, drinking water, optional snack, camera or cell phone. If using a cell phone camera, be sure that the sound is off.

Join Columbia Slough Watershed Council and Bird Guide Ryan Gilpin, from Nidus Consulting for a morning of Birding at Blue Lake Regional Park. Explore the beautiful Blue Lake and discover what birds may be flying, as we walk and practice identifying birds! This is a rain or shine event. All ages are welcome. Participants under the age of 18, will need to be accompanied by a parent, adult, or legal guardian.

What to bring: Dress for the weather and bring water. Snacks and drinks will be available. We will have extra binoculars. Bring yours, if you have them! Dogs are not allowed in this park because they can damage sensitive habitat and threaten wildlife.

Getting there:

See map below for meeting point and ideal parking location, circled in red. We will meet at Celilo Shelter. Metro kindly reserved this shelter for us from 9am-11am.

Metro has also granted us with 15 parking passes, free of charge. These passes are reserved on a first come, first serve basis. If you reserved a parking pass ticket - once you have arrived, drive past the kiosk, and check in with Liz at the welcome table to claim your pass. All passes need to be displayed in your windshield of your vehicle. Please attempt to carpool.

Parking passes are $5 per car, and can be purchased at Blue Lake. If you would like to attend and seeking no barrier to entry, please reach out.

Haunted Walking Tours

The Clark County Historical Museum will offer Haunted Walking Tours at 7 p.m. every Friday and Saturday in September and October. Guides will lead groups of 25 people through downtown Vancouver and beyond, stopping to share tales of lingering spirits, mysterious happenings, forgotten tragedies and moments when history and the supernatural cross paths. Brainy Birds: Fall

Birds are incredible and have adapted to survive in dynamic & changing environments. Every species has unique traits and sometimes quite specialized strategies. Using the backdrop of seasonal changes at Hoyt Arboretum, Dr. Kiki Sanford will facilitate discovery of the many ways it is connected to its avian inhabitants. Winter classes will center on adaptations for surviving intense seasonal conditions. Spring brings the frenzy of breeding season. Summer includes juvenile development and the onset of the next annual cycle. And, Autumn classes will focus on the fall migration. Each seasonal class will highlight the various birds present in the Arboretum, and include observation & discussion of specific aspects of how their brains & bodies lead to certain behaviors useful in the Hoyt habitats. About the Program Metro manages 20,000 acres of parks and natural areas, including 17 parks, 14 historic cemeteries and three boat ramps. About the Program Our mission, in partnership with Oregon State Parks, is to inspire every community to identify, cultivate or reclaim their relationship with nature in this cherished urban forest. About the Project Depending on the season, Friends staff lead volunteers in removing ivy growing up mature trees, digging up blackberry along the ground, or planting and caring for new native trees and shrubs near the creek. “Go west young man and grow up with the country.” While many men did heed this call to the western frontier seeking adventure and fortune, most women came with their families– as children, as wives and often as mothers caring for children. This tour will highlight their unique stories and their roles in the community as Portland transitioned from a rough and tumble frontier town to an early 20th century city.

As we walk through beautiful Lone Fir Cemetery, we will visit the gravesites of women whose names you may recognize as Portland’s founding families: Terwilliger, McLoughlin, Macleay, as well as lesser-known women whose contributions through civic, philanthropic, and religious organizations improved the lives of Portlanders.

Founders Hike PDX is a walking networking event at Hoyt Arboretum for founders, entrepreneurs, and growth-minded operators who would rather talk while moving than stand around a room. Participants pair up and walk and talk, rotating partners along the route so everyone meets several people. We will begin with a hike descending Fiirelane 5, then practice ski walking with poles on the Lief Erikson trail before heading gradually uphill on the Saltzman Rd. trail using our poles for "ski walking". After our first loop we will debrief and determine what additional trail loops we wish to make. Participants are encouraged to wear their favorite ski/snow hat, and we will celebrate the most creative snow dancer among the group. What is Ski Walking? Never Say Die: Ke Huy Quan

In this stunning and compulsively readable memoir, the Oscar-winning star of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, The Goonies, and Everything Everywhere All at Once, Ke Huy Quan, tells the story of his journey from Vietnamese refugee to 80s child star to the most inspiring comeback in Hollywood history. Interviewed by OPB’s Dave Miller. Ke Huy Quan’s Hollywood adventure began when he was twelve years old, a mere five years after his family escaped Communist Northern Vietnam and settled down to a relatively peaceful life in L.A.’s Chinatown. After attending an open call audition on a whim, he was unexpectedly swept up in the wild world of filmmaking: learning to swim from Harrison Ford on the set of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, receiving trucks full of toys from Steven Spielberg and George Lucas for his birthday, meeting Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker, and making lifelong friends on the set of The Goonies.

A star of two of the most beloved movies of the ‘80s, there appeared to be no limit to Ke’s rise. But just a few years later, the roles had dried up and it seemed like Hollywood no longer had a place for him. He eventually left acting to work odd jobs behind the scenes for directors like Wong Kar Wai. His confidence was badly shaken, but his love of performing never abated. It wasn’t until decades later, when he was 49 years old, that he stepped back in front of the camera to star in a strange little indie film called Everything Everywhere All at Once, which surprised everyone with its incredible box-office and awards season success. To call Ke’s Oscar-winning performance a triumphant return would be an understatement.

After attending an open call audition on a whim, he was unexpectedly swept up in the wild world of filmmaking: learning to swim from Harrison Ford on the set of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, receiving trucks full of toys from Steven Spielberg and George Lucas for his birthday, meeting Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker, and making lifelong friends on the set of The Goonies.

A star of two of the most beloved movies of the ‘80s, there appeared to be no limit to Ke’s rise. But just a few years later, the roles had dried up and it seemed like Hollywood no longer had a place for him. He eventually left acting to work odd jobs behind the scenes for directors like Wong Kar Wai. His confidence was badly shaken, but his love of performing never abated. It wasn’t until decades later, when he was 49 years old, that he stepped back in front of the camera to star in a strange little indie film called Everything Everywhere All at Once, which surprised everyone with its incredible box-office and awards season success. Sophie Allison has always written candidly about her life, making Soccer Mommy one of indie rock’s most interesting and beloved artists of the last decade. Allison has used Soccer Mommy’s songs as a vehicle to sort through the thoughts and encounters that inevitably come with the reality of growing up. After all, Soccer Mommy began as a bedroom-to-Bandcamp exercise with teenage Allison posting her plaintive songs as demos. Over the years, though, she has often enhanced that sound, using the endless production possibilities, newly at her fingertips, to outstrip singer-songwriter stereotypes. The records would start with songwriting’s kernels of truth, and she would then imagine all the unexpected shapes they could take. Every Soccer Mommy record has felt like a surprise.

On Soccer Mommy’s fourth album, the tender but resolute Evergreen, Allison is again writing about her life. But that life’s different these days: Since making her previous album, 2022’s Sometimes, Forever, Allison experienced a profound and also very personal loss. New songs emerged from that change, unflinching and sometimes even funny reflections on what she was feeling. (Speaking of funny, this is a Soccer Mommy album, so there’s an ode to Allison’s purple-haired wife in the game Stardew Valley, too.) These songs were, once again, Allison’s way to sort through life, to ground herself. She wanted them to sound that way, too, to feel as true to the demos—raw and relatable, unvarnished and honest—as possible. The songwriting would again lead where the production would follow. Portland Book Festival welcomes Molly and Meherwan Irani, the husband-and-wife team behind Asheville’s nationally celebrated Chai Pani Restaurant Group. Their flagship restaurant, Chai Pani, was named Outstanding Restaurant by the James Beard Foundation in 2022.

This year, Molly and Meherwan each bring a new book to the table. Meherwan has written No. 1 Best Indian Cookbook in the World: At-Home Recipes from the Streets, Truck Stops, Villages, and Palaces of India. Molly’s Service Ready: A Story of Love, Restaurants, and the Power of Hospitality was published earlier this year. Together, the books offer two very different—and deeply connected—perspectives on food, restaurants, and hospitality.

In celebration of Diwali—the Hindu festival of lights, marked by food, gathering, and celebration—Molly and Meherwan will join their longtime friend Chef Troy MacLarty at Bollywood Theater on Alberta Street for a collaboration. Volunteer Opportunity Help build the health and resilience of the urban forest at Tryon Creek. About the Program Our mission, in partnership with Oregon State Parks, is to inspire every community to identify, cultivate or reclaim their relationship with nature in this cherished urban forest. About the Project Join Oregon State Park Rangers to improve forest health by managing noxious weeds and maintaining trails. Volunteer activities include hiking and the use of hand tools. Instructions, gloves, and tools are provided (feel free to bring your own gloves if preferred). This event is best suited for adults and youth ages 14 and older. All youth need to be accompanied by an adult. Usually Thursdays focus on tree ivy and Fridays focus on trails. All tools and gloves will be provided. Please wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes, long pants, and long sleeves. Dress for the weather and bring rain gear if conditions call for it. Volunteer along Park Rangers to learn the techniques and tools it takes to maintain a safe park trail system and healthy forest.
