After many years celebrating the music of Big Star via the collective known as Big Starâs Third, Jody Stephens (the last surviving member of the original Big Star lineup) had an idea.
âI truly loved touring the world and performing Big Starâs Third with a core group, a variety of special guests, and a chamber orchestra playing the beautiful orchestrations created by Carl Marsh and Chris Stamey. But when the idea of celebrating the 50th anniversary of #1 Record came up, it was time to pare the production down to a five-piece rock band. So I called a few close and like-spirited musical friends.â
Enter some of the legendary groupâs biggest fans, who have long been associated with Big Star and related projects. The band now includes Mike Mills (R.E.M.), Jon Auer (The Posies), Pat Sansone (Wilco), Chris Stamey (The dB's) and Stephens. Dubbing themselves the Big Star Quintet, itâs a lineup that is both personal and close in spirit to #1 Record and Radio City.
After years of research, award-winning Seattle author David B. Williams joins Mount St. Helens Institute at a special Portland event for a conversation on his newly published book, In the Range of Fire and Ice: A Human and Natural History of Washingtonâs Cascades.
Blending human and natural history into a vivid portrait of one of North Americaâs most dynamic landscapes, In the Range of Fire and Ice is a lively, groundbreaking exploration of Washingtonâs Cascade Range. Drawing on conversations with anthropologists, park rangers, ecologists, and climate scientists, as well as firsthand experience, Williams brings readers into the mountains to uncover stories etched in the landscape over millennia.
From traditional Indigenous huckleberry harvesting grounds and ancient footpaths to erupting volcanoes, shifting glaciers, and forgotten mining camps, In the Range of Fire and Ice reveals the Cascades as a place of both deep time and constant change. While past logging, mining, and fires left lasting scars, the Cascades also tell powerful stories of recovery and resilienceâreturning wolverines and wolves, the remarkable rebirth of Mount St. Helens, and growing stewardship in the face of climate change. Through rich storytelling and careful research, Williams invites readers to see the Cascades not only as mountains, but as a living, evolving realm of fire, ice, and hope.
With each release, Lime Garden continue to further their reputation as ones to watch â with a host of tips behind them from NME to The Independent, BBC 6music to KEXP, and even Johnny Marr to Hayley Williams. Across Maybe Not Tonight, the exhilarating second album from Lime Garden (released via So Young Records), the intensity of the Brighton four-pieceâs writing winds itself into bolts from the blue. The pleasures and perils of partying serve as a thematic through-line, tracking the arc of a night out where unplanned adventures hold sway, fresh impulses are inhabited feverishly, and only the rush matters.
Produced by Charlie Andrew (Wolf Alice, alt-J), with additional production from drummer Annabel Whittle, Maybe Not Tonight reflects the bandâs rapid evolution. Glitchy vocal fragments, hypnotic drum lines, garage-rock guitars, detuned synths and even bongos weave together into immersive, richly detailed songs. Many began life as Whittleâs home-produced demos, drawing influence from Bon Iver, A.G. Cook, and Jim-E Stack, while pulling from a wide pool of inspirations including Magdalena Bay, The Breeders, St. Vincent, and New Order.

For nearly a decade as a duo, and longer still as solo artists, Armand Hammer have left a palpable mark on modern rap and hip-hop. At turns both sharp-witted and soul-crushing, their lyrics unspool threads of socio-political, historical, and philosophical import with a potent blend of incisive critique, gallows humor, and narrative ĂŠlan.
Mercy is the first Armand Hammer album since 2023's We Buy Diabetic Test Strips, a project that The Observer (UK) described as "an exceptional record that deserves your time and headphones" and The Line Of Best Fit deemed "their headiest and most impressive work thus far." On 2021's Haram, their first with The Alchemist, the duo "drag postcolonial wounds onto the examination table" (Pitchfork). Beats Per Minute called it "a tremendous success."

âHereâs to lifeâ Fans around the world can be found singing the chorus of the Roger Clyne-penned fan favorite âMekongâ and toasting their glasses in unison to celebrate life through rock-n-roll. But the inspiration for the song dates back to the time Roger went to Taipei, Taiwan, as a college student to teach English during the day and busk with his guitar at night for money.
Today, as Clyne prepares to release his 11th studio album, he continues to transform his life experiences, inspirations, observations and his own muses into timeless music. And whether heâs wearing his Converse high tops, boots or sandals, Clyneâs blend of punk rock, americana, indie-pop and mariachi influences have made him, drummer PH Naffah, guitarist Jim Dalton and bassist Nick Scropos â collectively known as Roger Clyne and The Peacemakers.
Fred Eaglesmith has played them all; from televisionâs The Late Show with David Letterman to the legendary Grand Ole Opry in Nashville to the refined acoustics of the Lincoln Center, but this fall, Canadaâs most uncompromising troubadour brings his whip-smart songwriting and road-tested show back to the very communites that inspired him.
The Juno Award winning poet of rural Canada has spent four decades turning service station stories, county fair romances, broken down old tractors, and gravel roads into timeless songs. His devoted fan base, affectionately known as âFred Headsâ and a reputation for delivering shows that are equal parts intimate and electrifying have established this founder of alt-country as the benchmark for his contemporaries as well as aspiring artists. Eaglesmithâs songs, filled with wit, heart, and unvarnished truth have been covered by the likes of Alan Jackson, Toby Keith, Miranda Lambert and countless others. Over 120 artists from Bluegrass to Punk have recorded his popular tune, âAlcohol & Pills.â His hit, âTrucker Speed,â has been named to the 100 Top Americana Songs of All Time and garnered over 60 million views with over 6 thousand independent videos having been created on Tik Tok.

Role Model Hermit is a collection of dark fables, intricate melodies and moments of revelation. Mary in the junkyard wrote the album between the UK and US and recorded it in London during the summer of 2025 with producer Oli Bayston (Boxed In). Throughout its runtime, the album walks the line between fact and fiction with a real sense of bite and moments of poignancy, while always creeping into the phantasmagoric.
Role Model Hermit showcases a band with full belief in their abilities. As The Face predicted, âmary in the junkyardâs breakout moment beckons.â From extensive tours of the UK and Europe, to a three-month North American run supporting Wet Leg, where they road-tested the new songs, plus a recent KEXP session, mary in the junkyard have been carefully building up to this.
Join us for an afternoon of drinks and conversation about ancient Rome. There are no set topics and no agenda; the discussion goes wherever the group takes
Colorado songwriter Emily Scott Robinson beckons to those who are lost, lonely, or learning the hard way with American Siren, her first album for Oh Boy Records. With hints of bluegrass, country, and folk, the eloquent collection shares her gift for storytelling through her pristine soprano and the perspective of her unconventional path into music.
âI think that the thread running through the album is those things that call to us, and how we can't resist that call,â she says. âItâs about the siren songs that come up through our lives.â
Though not fully autobiographical, American Siren gracefully blends imagined characters with the meaningful people sheâs encountered on her journey. Showcasing her ability as a storyteller, âIf Trouble Comes a Lookinââ invents a scene where a vulnerable priest and an unhappy wife meet in an Arkansas hotel bar. âHometown Heroâ is an emotional tribute to her cousin, a veteran lost to suicide. âLost Womanâs Prayerâ stems from the words of a sage friend she met while traveling abroad, while âEvery Day in Faithâ is a personal testament to seeing things through.
Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers bring a dynamic mix of punk rock, Americana, indie pop, and mariachi influences, drawing from their new album, âHell To Breakfast!â

In an era of excess and endless distraction, the New York-based singer/songwriter Margaret Glaspy rejects the noise in favor of something far more essential. Glaspy has assembled a selection of songs that span from fictional vignettes to unguarded self-revelation to empathetic observation of the troubled world around her. Produced by Joe Henry (the three-time Grammy-winning singer/songwriter/producer known for his work with luminaries like Aimee Mann and Joan Baez), I Am Both ultimately stands as a striking new statement from one of the modern music canonâs most formidable songwriters.
This will be a special night for all dance lovers!
Come at 8PM and get a ForrĂł Dance class!
Josephina Del Norte: The Argentinian DJ, singer and multi-instrumentalist Josefina Del Norte will start the night playing a mix of Latin American Cumbia and ForrĂł music from Brazil.
ForrĂł Beleza: Led by Pyata Penedo, a Brazilian lead singer, composer, multi-instrumentalist, and owner of Figure 8 Sound Recording Studio, the band performs a variety of music from Northeastern Brazil known as forrĂł.
ForrĂł is a lively Brazilian music and partner-dance tradition rooted in Northeastern Brazil, where it developed through community gatherings centered around music, dancing, and social connection. Popularized nationally by legendary artists such as Luiz Gonzaga, its distinctive sound is traditionally created by the accordion, zabumba drum, and triangle, producing rhythms that feel both grounded and flowing.
The dance brings people together through a warm embrace, shared movement, playful turns, and a close connection to the music. Although it may remind newcomers of the intimacy of tango, the energy of salsa, or the grounded feeling of blues, forrĂł has a joyful and welcoming character entirely its own.
More than simply a style of music or dance, forrĂł is a celebration of Brazilian culture and communityâand the best way to understand it is to come experience it for yourself!

Goodnight, Texas is a band youâve heard somewhere. Youâre going through their catalog, hearing lyrics about trapped coal miners and lovebird bank robbers. Banjos and mandolins, genre tough to pin down. Their new album âSignalsâ has some teeth. The first single, âRunaways,â even features a guest solo from Metallicaâs Kirk Hammett. Beyond the memorable riffs, it seems like theyâre stretching sonic roots deeper in every direction on Signals, with studio help from Oaklandâs Ian and Jay Pellicci (Deerhoof, Tune-Yards).
Googling, you find recent features in NME, Rolling Stone, No Depression and Consequence of Sound and appearances at festivals like Austin City Limits, Red Wing Roots, SXSW, Old Settlers and Beachlife Ranch. Theyâve toured with The Dead South, Larkin Poe, Shakey Graves, Trampled by Turtles, The Brothers Comatose, and John Craigie. In 2020, their song âThe Railroadâ was the opening montage theme for episode one of Tiger King, which had 53 million streams in its first week. Maybe that was where you heard them. Wait a minute - they have 250 million streams across platforms; maybe you heard them in your friendâs car on a cross-country road trip through the real town of Goodnight, Texas - the exact midpoint between songwriters Avi Vinocur and Patrick Dyer Wolfâs homes on each coast.
