Giant Collaborative Neurographic Art

Church of Art1801 Northwest Upshur Street

Church of Art's collaborative neurographics is a mindfulness-based creative activity that provides therapeutic relaxation through intuitive mark-making on a grand scale. For this mindfulness-based collaborative art activity, Church of Art will cover a long row of tables with a roll of paper and acrylic paint pens in a variety of sizes and colors. Participants will move freely around the table, filling the paper with sweeping, colorful doodles to the sounds of calming music. The giant scale allows for whole-arm movements, which signal brains to move out of fight-or-flight mode and into a state of mental relaxation and improved focus. The collaborative aspect of this workshop teaches one to let go of perfection and expectation through shared creative exploration, while working large encourages greater freedom of expression.

Neurographic art is a relatively new form of focused, intentional mark-making that uses curved, bold lines, vibrant colors and calming patterns. Physician and neurographics practitioner Ruben Halperin, M.D., will be the guide, co-facilitating this workshop with artist and Church of Art founder, Erika Halperin.

Immerse yourself in this beneficial form of meditative doodling and experience the mood-boosting effect of creativity coupled with community gathering.

Using paper and acrylic markers. All materials and supplies are provided by the studio.

Tickets Include:

  • 2 hours of guided creative exploration in a supportive, friendly environment with all supplies included.
  • Light snacks and non-alcoholic beverages are included.
  • That wonderful feeling of joy and connectedness that comes from a few hours of in-person artistic play with other adults.

Gully Boys

McMenamins Mission Theater & Pub1624 Northwest Glisan Street

The Gully Boys origin story begins in the aisles of a Minneapolis thrift shop. Vocalist/guitarist Kathy Callahan (she/her) and co-worker Nadirah McGill (they/them) spent their days sharing dreams and building a friendship amongst racks of forgotten treasures. When Kathy confided her desire to sing in a band, it set off a groundswell of events: Nadi grabbed a pair of drumsticks, and the two invited middle school friend Natalie Klemond (she/her) to join on bass. From there, a cover of Best Coast's "Girlfriend" marked the start of a journey fueled by undeniable chemistry, channeling the raw energy of legends like No Doubt, Garbage, and Hole into a sound that's galvanizingly Gully.

Grounded in a bond as fierce as their sound, Gully Boys' electrifying live performances have earned them spots on SXSW stages, Audiotree sessions, and tours alongside Nova Twins, Motion City Soundtrack, Destroy Boys, Bad Bad Hats, and more. From the iconic stage at Minneapolis' First Avenue to national gigs that defy expectations, Gully Boys capture an ethos of equal parts anger and tenderness-fueling a journey that feels like it's just getting started.

Forest Pub: Mushrooms

Purchase Tickets Here

Join us for our next Forest Pub focused on Mushrooms as the Architect of the Forest: Fungi and their Hidden Ecological Roles, an evening of storytelling, science, and community exploration in partnership with the Oregon Mycological Society. This special edition of Forest Pub dives into the fascinating world of fungi and their essential role in forest ecosystems—from decomposition and soil health to the hidden underground networks that connect trees and support forest resilience.

Guests will hear from local mycology expert, Tim Glassman, to learn how mushrooms shape forest ecology and climate health, and discover how fungi support both natural systems and human understanding of the forest. As always, Forest Pub blends science with storytelling in a relaxed, social setting designed to spark curiosity and conversation over a shared love of forests.

Speaker: Tim Glassman is currently the Chair of the Education Committee of the Oregon Mycological Society (OMS). He has been teaching Beginner’s ID and Toxicology to members and is currently creating a new Fungal Ecology class. Tim grew up in Buffalo, New York where he foraged around town riding his bicycle. Since then, he earned a Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry from MIT and worked as a Semiconductor Process Engineer at Intel for 21 years. After retiring in 2018 he joined OMS to learn about the diversity of mushrooms in the Pacific Northwest.

An Iliad by Lisa Peterson and Denis O'Hare

CoHo Theatre2257 Northwest Raleigh Street

An empty space. Enter the Poet. He has a story to tell—one he’s been telling for thousands of years, drifting through countless taverns and across countless stages. He invokes the Muses and fills the empty space with a tale at once grandly mythical and strikingly familiar.

Is this a story of antiquity or a story of today?

Told entirely by two performers, a poet and a musician, Lisa Peterson and Denis O’Hare’s An Iliad remixes Homer’s tale, bridging the ancient with the contemporary. In turns humorous and tender, violent and harrowing, An Iliad is a vital examination of the human compulsion towards war, a passionate interrogation of the toll war has on our humanity, and a testament to the power and potential of storytelling.

“An Iliad is pure theater: shocking, glorious, primal and deeply satisfying.”—Time Out New York

The practice of Yoga Nidra is thousands of years old yet immensely relevant to our time. A systematic process of deliberate relaxation that combines breath, body-scan and imagery-based techniques to serve as a powerful antidote to overstimulation, burnout and exhaustion.

Yoga Nidra is an accessible go-to practice in any wellness toolkit for sharpening cognition, bolstering creativity and promoting a healthy response to stress. Description: Learn to mix any color from the three primaries plus black and white. This builds great foundational skills before expanding your palette to include more pigments. In addition to helping strengthen your color skills, learning to mix from the primaries is an affordable way to get started painting without buying so many colors at once. We’ll start with a bit of color theory, mix a color wheel, make some neutral colors, and practice matching a few shades.

Intro to Drawing: Composition and Artistic License

Church of Art1801 Northwest Upshur Street

Why does one artist's drawing of a vase look mesmerizing while another artist's drawing of the same thing looks, well, boring? Composition has a lot to do with it, as does the idea of taking artistic license. In this class, we'll learn about how to use both composition and artistic license to find your own artistic style.

Artist and Church of Art founder, Erika Halperin, will start the workshop by leading the group in a discussion of selected artworks, with a particular focus on composition and artistic license. She will then guide the group through a series of hands-on drawing exercises, working with each student individually to answer questions and provide feedback.

This workshop is for anyone new to drawing or looking to strengthen their drawing skills.

All supplies and materials included. Using graphite and charcoal primarily on a variety of drawing papers.

Includes:

  • 3.5 hours of instruction and drawing in a supportive, friendly environment
  • Doughnut holes and non-alcoholic beverages
  • That wonderful feeling of joy and connectedness that comes from a few hours of creative, artistic play with other adults.

Located in NW Portland, Church of Art is an art-centered community space offering approachable, low-pressure workshops for adults. Come as you are, spend a few hours making art, meet some new people, and enjoy a creative Portland experience—no need to “be an artist.”

The session will start with a meditation and include a full breathwork session with live music, using a rhythmic breath to access deeper stillness and inner wisdom, leaving you with a sense of restoration and clarity. The event will end with some warming tea and optional sharing.

A yoga mat, blanket and bolster will be provided. Feel free to bring anything else you would like to make yourself comfortable lying down for a prolonged period, such as an extra blanket or pillow. Please consult a doctor first if you are pregnant or have any health conditions.

Science Pub: Convergent Evolution

McMenamins Mission Theater & Pub1624 Northwest Glisan Street

You've all heard the phrase, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Turns out, nature seems to agree. From the fossil record to the animals living today, evolution has a funny habit of coming up with the same solutions again and again. Different animals can end up looking remarkably alike and sometimes even behaving alike despite evolving completely independently. This fascinating phenomenon is called convergent evolution. In this fun and fascinating pub talk, paleontologist Nico Spadafora will take you on a journey through the weird, wonderful, and oddly repetitive world of convergent evolution. Explore how it happens, why evolution keeps repeating itself, and what these evolutionary “reruns” say about the incredible diversity of life on Earth.

Science Pubs are a casual lecture series located in fun venues across the region, recommended for ages 10 and over.

Nico Spadafora is the founder of The Fossil Team, an education company and traveling museum dedicated to bringing the wonders of natural history to life. He has spent more than two decades studying paleontology, zoology, and the natural sciences, diving headfirst into the scientific literature and developing a deep knowledge of both living and extinct animals. In his teens, Nico earned an internship at the Oregon Zoo, where he studied the anatomy, behavior, and traits of elephants, lions, rhinos, and many other animals. He later took his knowledge into the wild as a professional tracker and wilderness educator with Trackers Earth, following the trails and signs of bears, cougars, elk, and other wild animals. Today, Nico specializes in dinosaurs and prehistoric mammals and loves sharing the strange, spectacular, and sometimes downright bizarre stories hidden in the natural world. When he’s not studying, tracking, or obsessing over animals in the wild, he enjoys movies and games, cuddled up with his house panthers, Puma and Rufus.

Joe Rudko · Photorealism

PDX CONTEMPORARY ART1881 Northwest Vaughn Street

PDX CONTEMPORARY ART is pleased to present Photorealism, an exhibition of new, large-scale paintings and intimate drawings by Seattle-based artist Joe Rudko.

A few years ago, Joe Rudko might have wondered when or where a photograph was taken. Now, he asks: is it real? Changes in technology and culture have altered our perception of photography as a reliable record of reality. If photographs are fragmented, altered, and generated, then what does it mean to make a photorealistic painting? The works in this show began from the idea that if anything can be a photograph, anything can be photorealistic.

Rudko’s paintings begin with fragmented pieces of found photography. Collaged snippets of flowers, skies, hands, and snapshots of friends are continued with oil pigment sticks, extending their edges so they cross over one another, creating new, geometric images in the center. These works seek to merge the factual, functional purpose of photography with the more tactile, cerebral qualities of drawing and painting.

Also included in the exhibition is a series of drawings made on pages of a book of Henri Matisse’s travels in Morocco. These colored pencil and pastel drawings were made while the artist was in Paris and became a framework for his own travel drawings.
