Soccer Mommy

First Congregational Church1126 Southwest Park Avenue

Join an intimate evening featuring a pre-show discussion and Q&A with Soccer Mommy and special Guest Interviewer, followed by a local opener and solo performance by Soccer Mommy. This event is hosted by Papertrees Creative, in partnership with Literary Arts and the Portland Book Festival 2026.

Sophie Allison has always written candidly about her life, making Soccer Mommy one of indie rockโ€™s most interesting and beloved artists of the last decade. Allison has used Soccer Mommyโ€™s songs as a vehicle to sort through the thoughts and encounters that inevitably come with the reality of growing up. After all, Soccer Mommy began as a bedroom-to-Bandcamp exercise with teenage Allison posting her plaintive songs as demos. Over the years, though, she has often enhanced that sound, using the endless production possibilities, newly at her fingertips, to outstrip singer-songwriter stereotypes. The records would start with songwritingโ€™s kernels of truth, and she would then imagine all the unexpected shapes they could take. Every Soccer Mommy record has felt like a surprise.

On Soccer Mommyโ€™s fourth album, the tender but resolute Evergreen, Allison is again writing about her life. But that lifeโ€™s different these days: Since making her previous album, 2022โ€™s Sometimes, Forever, Allison experienced a profound and also very personal loss. New songs emerged from that change, unflinching and sometimes even funny reflections on what she was feeling. (Speaking of funny, this is a Soccer Mommy album, so thereโ€™s an ode to Allisonโ€™s purple-haired wife in the game Stardew Valley, too.) These songs were, once again, Allisonโ€™s way to sort through life, to ground herself. She wanted them to sound that way, too, to feel as true to the demosโ€”raw and relatable, unvarnished and honestโ€”as possible. The songwriting would again lead where the production would follow. Nothing overindulgent, everything real.

Beck: Ride Lonesome Tour

Eight-time Grammy-winner Beck has traveled light years from his emergence as a reluctant generational spokesperson when โ€œLoserโ€ exploded from a rejected 1992 demo into a ubiquitous 1994 smash. In the decades since, Beck's singular career has seen him utilize all manners and eras of music, blurring boundaries and blazing a path into the future while simultaneously foraging through the past.

Surfacing just as the mainstream and alternative rock intersected, no small thanks to his 1994 debut Mellow Gold, Beck quickly confounded expectations with subsequent releases including the lo-fi folk of One Foot in the Grave. But the album that first cemented Beckโ€™s place in the pantheon was 1996โ€™s multi-platinum Best Alternative Grammy winner Odelay. Odelay remains a key cultural touchstone from the indelible hooks of "Devil's Haircutโ€ and โ€œThe New Pollution" to the irresistible call and response of the Grammy-winning "Where It's At.โ€

From the world-tripping atmospherics of 1998's Mutations (Beck's second album to win the Best Alternative Grammy) and the fluorescent funk of 1999's Midnite Vultures through the somber reflections of 2002's Sea Change, 2005's platinum tour de force Guero, 2006's sprawling The Information, 2008's acclaimed Danger Mouse-produced Modern Guilt, no Beck record would ever sound like its predecessor.

That pattern would be upended in sublime sonic fashion with the 2014 release of Morning Phase. A companion piece of sorts to his 2002 masterpiece Sea Change, Morning Phase conjured the staggering downtempo impact of that record through the lens of an infectious optimism. The chorus of critical acclaim for Morning Phase was instant and unanimous, as Beck rolled into 2015 taking the Album of the Year top honor at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards, as well as the prize for Best Rock Album. Morning Phase also won in the Best Engineered Album (Non-Classical) category.

True to his chameleonic nature, Beck followed up Morning Phaseโ€™s subdued beauty with Colors, an intoxicating rainbow of auditory tricks and treats that went on to win Best Alternative Music Album (Beckโ€™s third) and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical (the second Beck album to do so) at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards in 2019. That same year, Beck would offer a first glimpse into his 14th studio album Hyperspace with the stunning surprise single โ€œSaw Lightningโ€โ€”written and produced by Beck and Pharrell Williams, who would be credited as co-writer and co-producer on seven of Hyperspaceโ€™s 11 tracks.

Beck has spent much of the last few years dazzling live audiences with a grab bag of engaging performances ranging from a handful of freeform one-off shows, to 2023โ€™s massive Summer Odyssey tour with co-headliners Phoenix. Summer Odyssey played to packed houses from the Kia Forum in L.A. to Madison Square Garden and beyond, and was followed by a historic full concert performance with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestraโ€”which inspired a series of orchestral performances at the likes of New Yorkโ€™s Carnegie Hall and Londonโ€™s Royal Albert Hall. The past few years have seen Beck embark on limited runs of orchestral dates featuring musicians who played on milestones including Mutations, Sea Change and Morning Phase accompanied by native orchestras in each city, delivering uniformly unforgettable evenings of unique symphonic arrangements of classics and deep cuts from his towering catalog and beyond.

Russian Circles

Halfway through the four-year touring cycle for their eighth full-length record Gnosis, Chicago-based instrumental trio Russian Circles hit the two-decade anniversary of their formation. One might expect a band to capitalize on such a major milestone. Instead, guitarist Mike Sullivan, drummer Dave Turncrantz, and bassist/keyboardist Brian Cook spent 2024 unceremoniously touring in support of their most recent album across Australia, South America, Europe, and North America. After all, this is the work ethic that built Russian Circles into one of the biggest heavy instrumental rock bands in the world. This is a band with no hit songs. No fan consensus on their best album. Just a reputation for consistency and quality.

Not that things havenโ€™t changed in the last 22 years. The band is now spread out between Chicago, Los Angeles, and a rural island off the coast of Seattle. While the trio insists their music is a confluence of broad-ranging influences-the formidable Touch & Go artists of the Midwest, the prog giants of late โ€™60s and early โ€™70s England, the hypnotic motorik and kosmische grooves of West Germany, the international undergroundโ€™s most caustic strains of metal-it is fair to say Russian Circlesโ€™ adventurous diversity has evolved into its own distinct sound. As one of the notoriously press-shy members anonymously mentioned, โ€œthe music we make is a collective process of reconciliation, navigation, and reflection upon aging both as individuals and as a creative entity. Life has created very real distances between us, but the band continues to be at the center, and this creative collaboration is a way of charting the passage of time while also giving us a reason to look to the future.โ€ On their latest album, Nine, the band triangulates their relative positions into singular seismic long-form album-oriented soundtracks to the trials and tragedies of life in the modern age.

For Nine, Russian Circles adhered to their strategy from Blood Year (2019) and Gnosis (2022) by teaming up with engineer Kurt Ballou (Converge, Mastodon, High on Fire). Basic tracking took place at Electrical Audio in Chicago while the finishing touches occurred at Ballouโ€™s GodCity Studio in Salem, Massachusetts. Recording at Electrical Audio allowed the band to retain a thread to their earliest endeavors, with the band having recorded at Steve Albiniโ€™s exalted studio as far back as their debut album Enter (2006). The relationship with Ballou is a more recent development stemming back to the bandโ€™s sixth album Guidance (2016), owing to his ability to highlight the weight and entropy of metal and hardcore bands in their natural environment while enhancing the clarity and articulation often lost in walls of distortion.

Nine continues Russian Circlesโ€™ unhurried evolution and disciplined refinement, leaning into their strengths while pushing at the boundaries of their sound. Album opener โ€œBoreholeโ€ offers what might be the bandโ€™s closest approximation of a traditional rock song schematic, with a structure of repeating parts that takes the listener on a journey promising hope only to bring them full circle to the dark, desolate, and dystopian futility of the songโ€™s namesake: Russiaโ€™s abandoned Kola Superdeep Borehole. From there, the band launches into a ferociously concise overview of metal battle tactics with โ€œEmpathโ€-where a Godflesh-style bass crunch and tornado siren drone ushers in thrash-inspired guitars, venomous black metal attacks, d-beat forays, a deliciously knuckleheaded hardcore breakdown, and a final scorched earth war metal riff, all in just under five minutes. Side A closes with Nineโ€˜s grand centerpiece-the patiently cataclysmic โ€œEluvial.โ€ Centered around the kind of ping-ponging delayed guitar patterns that Brian Eno and The Edge developed for The Joshua Tree, guitarist Mike Sullivan slowly unfurls a winding, linear melody against the backdrop of drummer Dave Turncrantzโ€™s Latin-rhythm-inspired groove and Brian Cookโ€™s pairing of grinding bass and stuttering electronics. โ€œEluvialโ€ slowly builds to an apex, leaving only the vaguest breadcrumb trail of obscured percussive and melodic motifs to the songโ€™s final cleansing tempest.

The latter half of Nine builds on Russian Circlesโ€™ aural expansion. Side B opens with bottom-end synth pulses, dubby bass lines, serpentine finger-tapped guitar patterns, and nimble rhythmic shifts on โ€œE2.โ€ On โ€œMeridian,โ€ the band once again employs the slow-build strategies of their post-rock inclinations, with Turncrantzโ€™s propulsive drums and Sullivanโ€™s Steve Reich-esque arpeggios giving the song a sense of constant forward momentum, perfectly suited for gliding along the expressways of towering metropolises on neon nights. The album ends with the light and dark contrast of โ€œArlettaโ€ and โ€œSeventh Seal.โ€ Much like Cliff Burton-era Metallicaโ€™s penchant of pairing melancholic classical guitar passages with the blunt force trauma of their heaviest tracks, so does the stark beauty of Sullivanโ€™s nylon string solo composition usher in the bandโ€™s most unapologetically straightforward metallic assault.

The album art for Nine consists of photographs of Snowpile for Chicago, a sculpture by Tony Tasset thatโ€™s been on display in the windows of Chicago Public Libraryโ€™s West Town Branch since 2004-the year Russian Circles formed. Constructed out of cast bronze, brass, fiberglass, resin, and oil paint, Snowpile for Chicago is a convincing recreation of the mounds of dirty snow that occupy city streets throughout Midwest winters. The inclusion of this image is partially a nod to the bandโ€™s hometown, but more importantly serves as an analogy for Russian Circlesโ€™ music. Itโ€™s a meticulously crafted piece that documents a cold, harsh, and ugly reality. Even though this artifact captures something that is unpleasant, its rendering by human hands gives it a quality of striking beauty. There is a larger conversation to be had about transgressive art, ephemera, the devaluing of art in a cultural landscape that craves constant content, the advent of AI in creative realms, and the general sense of futility that looms over musicians in the modern age, but as an instrumental band, Russian Circles opt to plant these notions in the listenersโ€™ heads through the image of a haunting sculpture in a stark interior space rather than through crafting online manifestos, social media rants, or topical lyrics.

Reinvention is unnecessary when the path forward has always been an open horizon. When it comes to Russian Circles, you can go back through their catalog and find a vast array of moods, stylistic shifts, and timbral experiments across any given album, yet there has been a noticeable progression in the overall experience of taking in any one of their albums as a whole. Whereas earlier albums were almost playful in their traversing of territories, Nine is a document of a band that knows the lay of the land and is fortifying their dominion over the varied terrain.

The self-proclaimed "Kings of Goblin Metal," Los Angeles, California's Nekrogoblikon are melodic hard rock pranksters who deploy gnarly death metal earworms filled with crafty hooks, claw-pumping choruses, lightning-fast riffs, and over the top, EDM-style keyboard flourishes. With their ostentatious costumes and goblin hypeman, the band takes cues from hyperbolic horror-metal enthusiasts like GWAR, Finntroll, and Dethklok, while maintaining an affable, self-referential sense of humor. The group's early outings, like 2007's Goblin Island, were largely low-fidelity affairs, but by the early 2010s Nekrogoblikon were operating at a far higher technical level, and employing a rotating cast of talented players.

Houndmouth

Houndmouth is an American rock band from New Albany, In 2026, the band returns with Lordy, a stripped-back, emotionally direct record that marks a new chapter for frontman Matt Myers. After a period of creative stagnation shaped by major life changes, Myers reconnected with his songwriting through raw, unfiltered expression, largely writing alone for the first time. The result is an intimate, roots-driven album focused on rebuilding, acceptance, and forward motion. Supported by producer Brad Cook and a close-knit group of collaborators, the band continues its evolution while retaining the melodic instincts and Americana foundation that first defined its sound.

Gully Boys

McMenamins Mission Theater & Pub1624 Northwest Glisan Street

The Gully Boys origin story begins in the aisles of a Minneapolis thrift shop. Vocalist/guitarist Kathy Callahan (she/her) and co-worker Nadirah McGill (they/them) spent their days sharing dreams and building a friendship amongst racks of forgotten treasures. When Kathy confided her desire to sing in a band, it set off a groundswell of events: Nadi grabbed a pair of drumsticks, and the two invited middle school friend Natalie Klemond (she/her) to join on bass. From there, a cover of Best Coast's "Girlfriend" marked the start of a journey fueled by undeniable chemistry, channeling the raw energy of legends like No Doubt, Garbage, and Hole into a sound that's galvanizingly Gully.

Grounded in a bond as fierce as their sound, Gully Boys' electrifying live performances have earned them spots on SXSW stages, Audiotree sessions, and tours alongside Nova Twins, Motion City Soundtrack, Destroy Boys, Bad Bad Hats, and more. From the iconic stage at Minneapolis' First Avenue to national gigs that defy expectations, Gully Boys capture an ethos of equal parts anger and tenderness-fueling a journey that feels like it's just getting started.

Russian Circles

McMenamins Crystal Ballroom1332 West Burnside Street

Russian CirclesPrimitive Man

Not that things haven't changed in the last 22 years. The band is now spread out between Chicago, Los Angeles, and a rural island off the coast of Seattle. While the trio insists their music is a confluence of broad-ranging influences-the formidable Touch & Go artists of the Midwest, the prog giants of late '60s and early '70s England, the hypnotic motorik and kosmische grooves of West Germany, the international underground's most caustic strains of metal-it is fair to say Russian Circles' adventurous diversity has evolved into its own distinct sound. As one of the notoriously press-shy members anonymously mentioned, 'the music we make is a collective process of reconciliation, navigation, and reflection upon aging both as individuals and as a creative entity. Life has created very real distances between us, but the band continues to be at the center, and this creative collaboration is a way of charting the passage of time while also giving us a reason to look to the future.' On their latest album, Nine, the band triangulates their relative positions into singular seismic long-form album-oriented soundtracks to the trials and tragedies of life in the modern age.

For Nine, Russian Circles adhered to their strategy from Blood Year (2019) and Gnosis (2022) by teaming up with engineer Kurt Ballou (Converge, Mastodon, High on Fire). Basic tracking took place at Electrical Audio in Chicago while the finishing touches occurred at Ballou's GodCity Studio in Salem, Massachusetts. Recording at Electrical Audio allowed the band to retain a thread to their earliest endeavors, with the band having recorded at Steve Albini's exalted studio as far back as their debut album Enter (2006). The relationship with Ballou is a more recent development stemming back to the band's sixth album Guidance (2016), owing to his ability to highlight the weight and entropy of metal and hardcore bands in their natural environment while enhancing the clarity and articulation often lost in walls of distortion.

Nine continues Russian Circles' unhurried evolution and disciplined refinement, leaning into their strengths while pushing at the boundaries of their sound. Album opener 'Borehole' offers what might be the band's closest approximation of a traditional rock song schematic, with a structure of repeating parts that takes the listener on a journey promising hope only to bring them full circle to the dark, desolate, and dystopian futility of the song's namesake: Russia's abandoned Kola Superdeep Borehole. From there, the band launches into a ferociously concise overview of metal battle tactics with 'Empath'-where a Godflesh-style bass crunch and tornado siren drone ushers in thrash-inspired guitars, venomous black metal attacks, d-beat forays, a deliciously knuckleheaded hardcore breakdown, and a final scorched earth war metal riff, all in just under five minutes. Side A closes with Nine's grand centerpiece-the patiently cataclysmic 'Eluvial.' Centered around the kind of ping-ponging delayed guitar patterns that Brian Eno and The Edge developed for The Joshua Tree, guitarist Mike Sullivan slowly unfurls a winding, linear melody against the backdrop of drummer Dave Turncrantz's Latin-rhythm-inspired groove and Brian Cook's pairing of grinding bass and stuttering electronics. 'Eluvial' slowly builds to an apex, leaving only the vaguest breadcrumb trail of obscured percussive and melodic motifs to the song's final cleansing tempest.

The latter half of Nine builds on Russian Circles' aural expansion. Side B opens with bottom-end synth pulses, dubby bass lines, serpentine finger-tapped guitar patterns, and nimble rhythmic shifts on 'E2.' On 'Meridian,' the band once again employs the slow-build strategies of their post-rock inclinations, with Turncrantz's propulsive drums and Sullivan's Steve Reich-esque arpeggios giving the song a sense of constant forward momentum, perfectly suited for gliding along the expressways of towering metropolises on neon nights. The album ends with the light and dark contrast of 'Arletta' and 'Seventh Seal.' Much like Cliff Burton-era Metallica's penchant of pairing melancholic classical guitar passages with the blunt force trauma of their heaviest tracks, so does the stark beauty of Sullivan's nylon string solo composition usher in the band's most unapologetically straightforward metallic assault.

The album art for Nine consists of photographs of Snowpile for Chicago, a sculpture by Tony Tasset that's been on display in the windows of Chicago Public Library's West Town Branch since 2004-the year Russian Circles formed. Constructed out of cast bronze, brass, fiberglass, resin, and oil paint, Snowpile for Chicago is a convincing recreation of the mounds of dirty snow that occupy city streets throughout Midwest winters. The inclusion of this image is partially a nod to the band's hometown, but more importantly serves as an analogy for Russian Circles' music. It's a meticulously crafted piece that documents a cold, harsh, and ugly reality. Even though this artifact captures something that is unpleasant, its rendering by human hands gives it a quality of striking beauty. There is a larger conversation to be had about transgressive art, ephemera, the devaluing of art in a cultural landscape that craves constant content, the advent of AI in creative realms, and the general sense of futility that looms over musicians in the modern age, but as an instrumental band, Russian Circles opt to plant these notions in the listeners' heads through the image of a haunting sculpture in a stark interior space rather than through crafting online manifestos, social media rants, or topical lyrics.

Crooked Looks with Ray Ramano

McMenamins Mission Theater & Pub1624 Northwest Glisan Street

Formed by lead vocalist/lead guitarist Sage Collette, Crooked Looks is a hard rock band that rides the wave of fierce, fuzzy sounds made popular by Queens of the Stone Age and fellow Pacific Northwest band Soundgarden. Light melodies and firm riffs paired with lyrics that emanate a youthful but ever-knowing and ever-partying spirit stream from this group's musical subconscious, and in a short span of time, Crooked Looks have proven themselves worthy of a spot on the charts.
