Portland Piano International: Jan Lisiecki

“a whole dancing world” Canadian pianist Jan Lisiecki performs an all-dance program spanning Martinů, de Falla, Szymanowski, Schubert, Bartók, Ginastera, Chopin, Brahms, Piazzolla, and Albéniz — from folk dances to the grand waltz. You’ll feel this program before you hear it! Piazzolla’s Libertango. Falla’s “Ritual Fire Dance.” A Chopin waltz, and the “Heroic” Polonaise that closes the afternoon. Waltz, tango, polonaise: these are dances our bodies instinctively want to move to, and on November 8 Jan Lisiecki, one of the most celebrated pianists of his generation, plays every one of them.

French Masterpieces for Violin and Piano

Violinist Tomás Cotik and pianist Shinmyung Rho trace the French violin tradition across two world wars. Lili Boulanger and Claude Debussy died within ten days of each other in March 1918 — Boulanger at twenty-four, the first woman to win the Premier Grand Prix de Rome; Debussy leaving a Violin Sonata that was both his last completed work and the last music he played in public. Poulenc wrote his sonata in occupied Paris in 1943, inscribed to the memory of Federico García Lorca. The evening ends with Ravel’s Second Sonata, with its central blues movement, and Tzigane. Program: Boulanger, Deux Morceaux; Debussy, Sonata in G minor; Poulenc, Sonata for Violin and Piano; Ravel, Sonata No. 2 in G major and Tzigane. $30 general admission, free for PSU students, faculty and staff.

Brahms Sonatas for Violin and Piano

Brahms’s three violin sonatas complete in one evening. The program closes with the Scherzo in C minor that the twenty-year-old Brahms contributed to the collaborative “F-A-E” Sonata, written with Robert Schumann and Albert Dietrich in 1853 as a surprise for the violinist Joseph Joachim — who was handed the manuscript at a gathering in the Schumann household, played it through with Clara Schumann, and correctly named the composer of every movement. Program: Sonata No. 1 in G major, Op. 78; Sonata No. 2 in A major, Op. 100; Sonata No. 3 in D minor, Op. 108; Scherzo in C minor, WoO 2. $30 general admission, free for PSU students, faculty and staff.

Gretel! The Musical

A co-production by PSU Theater Arts and Oregon Children’s Theatre. Gretel! The Musical is not your typical fairytale. Drawing from Vassilisa the Beautiful (the Russian folktale that is the true origin story behind Hansel and Gretel) and many other Eastern European Tales, this new musical for young audiences places grief, anger, and survival at its center. When Gretel’s mother dies, she is left with little more than a magic doll, a cruel stepmother, and an impossible errand: travel into the deep forest and steal the skull of undying light from Baba Yaga, the most fearsome witch in all of folklore. What follows is a journey through darkness and wonder — horsemen who carry the sun across the sky, a hut that walks on chicken feet, three impossible tasks — but at its heart, Gretel! is a story about a girl learning to harness her own ferocity, tend her own grief, and claim her own power. Featuring an alternative folk-rock score by Jenn Hartmann Luck and a fluid ensemble of actor-musicians and puppeteers, this production brings a bold, contemporary theatricality to a primal story. This is an exciting co-production with Oregon Children’s Theatre — a partnership that will shape the production’s visual identity from the ground up.
